The Results Just Don’t Measure Up

I really hate to have to write the front office, again, because I am fully aware that some of you out there in the Redskins fanbase are sick of hearing about it, but it’s time to address the elephant in the room for this franchise.  I wrote a column last offseason called, “Let’s Talk About Bruce Allen” (click here to read), in which I argued in part that because Allen appears to have the business functions of the Redskins franchise under control, he wasn’t as bad as some might think and that Dan Snyder will likely keep him around for awhile notwithstanding the results on the field.  That column was published right at the beginning of the Scot McCloughan, raging incompetent drunk / not a drunk or incompetent debate, and I stated that Allen needed to publicly step forward and defend his player personnel guy.

Well, that didn’t work out, did it?

I refuse to bore and/or infuriate our readers too much by further re-hashing that particular nightmare, but suffice to say this: what we learned from this drama is that it’s clearly been The Bruce Allen Experience this entire time.  This entire ship belongs to Allen.  And while things haven’t been a complete disaster on the field – after all, it isn’t Bruce’s fault that the whole team decided to get hurt at the same time this past season, forcing the Redskins to field 663,784 different offensive line combinations – it’s just as true that we, the Redskins-consuming public, haven’t been witness to anything more than the usual mediocrity under his leadership.

If you’ve been listening to our shows, you know that I’ve tried to take a measured approach to the team’s problems.  You haven’t heard me claim that Brucey-Boy is the spawn of Satan who single-handedly demolished a once proud franchise, and I haven’t once used the #FireBruce hashtag.  Not all of this team’s problems rest in his Bourbon-soaked lap, even though a sizable portion of the fanbase believes it to be true.

All the same, though, the never-ending cycle of awful to mediocre to once in a blue moon minor playoff functionary, then back to awful, gets old, doesn’t it?   After all, Bruce, who is the son of a Redskins legend, the venerable old head coach George Allen, was brought here to bring a sense of professionalism to the organization and bring it out of the Vinny Cerrato-created disaster zone.

While the often nonsensical, sometimes infuriating, occasionally teasing, always stupid free agent signings have come to a grinding halt, which had the collateral effect of reigning in the salary cap craziness that was a hallmark of Bug-Eyed Vinny’s tenure, have things actually gotten any better?  I’ll grant you that the team is no longer a national embarrassment and walking punch-line, but how about some honest-to-goodness, objective results?  Let’s take a quick look at the Cerrato and Allen eras and find out.

Cerrato was the general Executive Vice President for Football Operations during two separate tenures, the first being from 1999-2001 when he was fired by head coach Marty Schottenheimer.  His second tenure was from 2002 – 2009, which was 8 seasons.  I’ll give him a pass for his first tenure for the purpose of this comparison.  Allen has been the general manager and more recently team president from 2010 – the present, which is also 8 years.  As a result, this is a perfect time to compare the success of the two.  Here are the records of the Cerrato and Allen teams:

Cerrato            Playoffs                                   Allen                    Playoffs

2002: 7 – 9      No                                           2010: 6 – 10        No

2003: 5 – 11   No                                           2011: 5 – 11        No

2004: 6 – 10    No                                           2012: 10 – 6        NFCE Champ, 0 – 1

2005: 10 – 6    Wild Card, 1 – 1                      2013: 3 – 13        No

2006: 5 – 11    No                                           2014: 4 – 12        No

2007: 9 – 7      Wild Card, 0 – 1                      2015: 9 – 7          NFCE Champ, 0 – 1

2008: 8 – 8      No                                           2016:  8 – 7 – 1   No

2009: 4 – 12    No                                           2017: 7 – 9          No

Total:  54 – 74; playoffs 1 – 2                           Total:             52 – 75 – 1; 0 – 2

Winning perc: .422                                          Winning perc: .406

Cerrato’s teams had 21 pro bowl selections from 2002 – 2009, including multiple selections for the same player.  Allen’s teams had 23 pro bowl selections from 2010 – 2017, including multiple selections.  Allen’s advantage in pro bowls is in large part thanks to Trent Williams.

The two track records look remarkably similar. Frighteningly similar.

Here’s the point: from an objective standpoint, the Bruce Allen tenure hasn’t produced tangible results that are any better than his predecessor; in fact, Allen’s .406 winning percentage is actually worse than Cerrato’s was.  No, it isn’t totally fair to solely blame the general manager / team president for the win – loss record, but the NFL is a results-based business, and from an on the field perspective, Allen’s teams have actually been worse overall.  If someone told me when Allen was hired 8 years ago that this would be how things were going to turn out, I’d never have believed it.  I expected much more from him.  The truth is that the general manager / team president is ultimately responsible for the hiring the coaches and drafting and signing the players, so I don’t feel as though assigning blame for the team’s win – loss record to each of them is an unfair measurement of the success of each man’s reign.

Let’s take a quick look at the coaches hired by both men:

Cerrato: Steve Spurrier (2002-03), Joe Gibbs (2004-07), Jim Zorn (2008-09)

Allen: Mike Shanahan (2010-13), Jay Gruden (2014-present)

Of that group of five coaches, only Jim Zorn was clearly a mistake from the beginning, and I do blame Cerrato for that.  All the rest, even Spurrier, had potential at the beginning.  A slight edge to Allen, then, in the coaching department.

Here’s a look at some of the key and/or big money players signed/re-signed/traded for by both men:

Cerrato:

2002: Tre Johnson, Leslie Shepherd, Jeremiah Trotter

2003: Trung Candidate, Regan Upshaw, Randy Thomas

2004:  Mark Brunell, Clinton Portis, Marcus Washington

2005: Santana Moss

2006: Adam Archuleta, Andre Carter, Antwaan Randle-El

2007: London Fletcher, Pete Kendall

2008: Jason Taylor

2009: Derrick Dockery, Albert Haynesworth, Reynaldo Wynn

Allen:

2010: Adam Carriker, Jammal Brown, Donovan McNabb

2011:  Stephen Bowen, Barry Cofield, Chris Chester, Rex Grossman

2012: Pierre Garcon, London Fletcher, Brandon Meriweather, Josh Morgan

2013: Kedric Golston, DeAngelo Hall

2014: Jason Hatcher, Desean Jackson, Shawn Lauvoa, Andre Roberts, Tracy Porter, Adam Hayward

2015: Will Blackmon, Chris Culliver, Mason Foster, Terrance Knighton, Stephen Paea

2016: Will Blackmon, David Bruton, Josh Norman

2017: Zach Brown, Ziggy Hood, Terrell McClain, Stacy McGee, Terrelle Pryor, D.J. Swearinger

This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it’s clear that each has hits and misses.  Also, Cerrato had Joe Gibbs picking players for 4 years, and Allen had Mike Shanahan doing the same, so neither man is 100% responsible for these acquisitions.  Again, though, both were the team’s senior executive and therefore get both the credit and the blame.  Certainly, Cerrato had the biggest mistake – actually, one of the biggest free agent mistakes in NFL history – in Albert Haynesworth, but putting him aside, does the Allen list (which was guided by Scot McCloughan for 2 years) look noticeably better than the Cerrato list to you?  The point is, both men had their successes and failures, but neither ultimately produced a long-term winning team.

Allen, of course, has other important tasks, chiefly, the stadium project, which will doubtlessly keep him employed with the team for the foreseeable future absent some sort of unforeseen disaster.  But from a football perspective, it’s an objective fact that the franchise has at best essentially stayed the same as it was during the Cerrato tenure.

I don’t necessarily think Allen is quite as awful as some of you do, but it just isn’t working on the field.  8 years is enough to show me that Bruce Allen is charge of football operations isn’t going to work, ever.  It’s too early to tell if the promotion of Doug Williams to Senior Vice President of Player Personnel will make a difference.  I’m willing to give it a shot out of respect for Doug, and also because there’s not another choice for fans.  I’m not holding my breath at this point that we’re going to see a magical turnaround under Bruce’s leadership.  I hope I’m wrong.

  • I got stoned at lunch once, I was like 16, framing houses. This was a big custom home with a conventional framed cut up roof, hips and dormers sticking out everywhere. We were studding in the Gable wall on a big Dormer, the boss is up on the rafter ready to make a mark, I’m standing on the wall under him with the 2×6 on the bottom plate layout, 4′ level in my hand. The idea is, I hold the stud on layout and plumb it while he marks the top, the cut man notches it while we nail in the previous stud, moving along.
    “Ok, mark it”
    “Hey dumbass”
    “What”
    “Look at your level”

I’m holding the level perfectly plumb on the face of the board, not the edge. The level is plumb, the board is doing it’s own thing. I stopped smoking weed at work. It was embarrassing, they never let me forget it, either.

Why the French are so F*up culturally

how to fix it so Netflix can’t compete at the Cannes Film Festival

Cannes first announced last year, saying that films that want to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or award must have a French theatrical release, minimum of one week, to be eligible. But the company couldn’t get around French media regulations that require a film be kept off streaming services for up to 36 months after a theatrical launch. I’m surprised any films can meet this rule and be eligible for a Palme d’Or

“movie” people need to get over the fact that the young part of the population doesn’t go out to the theater like previous generations did, streaming is the future of things

  • Once upon a time , when I was young , I worked for an auto parts distributer . Organized inventory , delivered parts to auto part stores . It was a shitty job , but it was a job. We started getting stoned in the parking lot in the morning before work . One day I headed out in a panel truck full of auto parts for the days delivery’s . First stop was the gas station and I was stoned fairly good . When I got to the first parts store , the manager said call your boss. I called him and he told me to go outside and look at the gas tank on the truck. I did and what was there ? The damn nozzle from the gas pump at the station . I took off with the damn thing still on the truck . Ripped it clear off from the hose . felt like a dumbass. True story

pay depends on what the government organization does
when I worked for the state, auditors had a hard time classifying what we did
we had evolved to a knowledge based organization
we had lots of high end people with either professional licenses, advanced degrees, etc.
we administered the money and figured out where it should go and evaluated how well it was utilized
we had people with doctorates in civil engineering, geology, biology, hydrology and land use management
the money was spent on the clerical and blue collar workers to accomplish the work/changes

  • has anybody seen Ben Wapple ?

    • He busted in k0n’s pocket?

      • weed will be legalized G DAMNITT and nobody better argue with me about it

        • It wouldn’t hurt my feelings.

          • I don’t much care . If I want to smoke some pot , i’ll go buy some . Employer still has the right to not hire or to fire you for weed in your system

          • That is correct.

          • and I believe they should have that right . There are jobs you wouldn’t want to do with somebody stoned and there are jobs you can only do if you’re stoned , just to get through the day . Like painting or hanging dry wall

          • I personally don’t work under the influence of anything except caffeine. You have to consider your family, and the family and person of your fellow employees.

          • For me, if I’m on vacation, weekends, relaxing, if I feel like smoking some, I will. If I feel like having a few drinks, I will. Work is different.

          • It is , but some knucklehead somewhere doing a dangerous job won’t look at it that way . You represent the majority but that’s not who employers are worried about

          • Yeah, and they can piss test all they want, it’s their company. I’ve been in boilers watching other welders snort heroin off of a welding lense, right there on the scaffolding. I’d make it clear to them, to stay the fuck away from me. They’d usually fuck themselves up, or be arrested copping dope in whatever city. Karma

          • That’s hardcore .

          • Kicked one dude right off his bucket, what’s he gonna do? Tell on me for objecting to him using heroin on the job? Nope. Get his ass beat? That would be his doing.

          • absolutely

          • Coming to work stoned is a knee-jerk assumption. Is there an epidemic of people who come to work drunk? Not in my experience. People will smoke or drink once they are off the clock.

          • That is not true . Two totally different substances and how they effect you . I know people that smoke weed all day , everyday .

          • I don’t have that need.

          • Me neither. I had a small stash that I threw away after not touching it for over 10 years. To be honest it wasn’t very good. The new stuff? One hit, and I’m just fine. I like the economics of that.

          • The science of cannabis is enjoying a spectacular leap. The strains available today…… it’s like fine wine, or whiskey.

          • No shit. And I have a healthy respect for its potency.

          • Yeah….you shouldn’t smoke shit…..we call that “Mexican brown”

          • me either , but there’s a shit ton of people who do . I know dudes that won’t take a job that drug tests. They don’t have a pot to piss in either .

          • There ya go.

          • You know the type .

          • Yup

          • I work for myself, so I can do as I please. But if I had people reporting to me, and ANYONE came in stoned, there would be an immediate discussion and a warning never to show up stoned again.

          • That’s kind of my point .

          • You may not know they are stoned as opposed to being buzzed from alcohol . Some people can hide a weed buzz pretty good.

          • If they are high functioning and it’s not a dangerous job, I’m less concerned. But if they smell like weed and are zoning out, there would be a discussion.

          • Yeah , IDK . Are they at their best ? Does their work suffer ? Some people can function at a near normal level while stoned , within reason. Others , not even close

          • If you’re a good employer, you have standards, metrics and deadlines. If you are unwilling or unable to perform your job description, you’re out.

This why I don’t buy the idea of NFL players showing up for games stoned. The game is way too competitive, and you’re easily replaced. Will it happen sometimes? Sure it will. And players will pay the price.

          • And yeah, we gonna argue

  • “Federal employees lag private sector workers in salaries by 32 percent on average, report says”

    Down from 34-35%.

That has to be an incredibly difficult comparison. Because both the government sector and the private sector have very different ways of grinding down their workers.

    • No Punt Intended

I have hired govies to my company as contractors whereby they leave on a Friday and come back Monday working for me. They keep the same office and the same job, but they work for my company and see anywhere from 20-60% pay increases and it’s still great business for us because we typically bill the government twice what we pay ’em.

Whenever anyone asks me what I do for a living – and I get asked that a lot – I smile, raise my glass and say, “I print money.”

    • “Last year the Congressional Budget Office concluded that federal employees overall earn 3 percent more on average but that there are large differences by educational level: from a 34 percent advantage for federal workers with a high school education or less to a 24 percent shortfall for those with a professional degree or doctorate.”

That sounds about right. And the gap is the largest in the big cities, where you’d expect it to be. And you expect an (more than the private sector) egalitarian entity to over-pay the lower end and under pay the higher end, that’s one of the major criticisms of communism.

  • The pause button is most used whenever one of us is talking or making some kind of noise during a show.

The difference is, being as I’m 12, as soon as she hits play, I start talking or making noise again. This can happen several times over until I feel as if something thrown at my head is immenent.

    • Squinnsamania, brother!

I use the pause button at home quite a bit. I work long days. Look forward to spending a little time with my son, have dinner and then mindliessly relax in front of the tv; however, my wife believes that last part should be “let’s talk” time. So, I have to pause frequently to accomodate the talk time (sometimes she is more chatty than others).

Carfentanil, a synthetic opioid that’s 5,000 times more powerful than heroin and 100 times more potent than its derivative, fentanyl, which is lethal on its own and accounts for a surge in fatal overdoses nationwide.

Carfentanil — it’s used to tranquilize elephants — is deadly to humans at 0.02 milligrams, an amount akin to a speck of dust compared to fentanyl, which can be fatal at 2 milligrams.

Carfentanil is being produced in underground labs in China and sold illegally to traffickers via the internet, according to federal officials interviewed by Fox News.

Members of Congress can’t possibly regulate Facebook. They don’t understand it.
Born long before the digital era took hold, the mostly gray-haired members of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce committees came to grill Mark Zuckerberg, the errant 33-year-old CEO who came before them in his uncustomary suit and periwinkle tie on Tuesday afternoon.

And for very good reason, since Facebook — where billions of people all over the world get their news, whether true or false — has been incredibly irresponsible and cavalier with users’ personal information. That was made clear last month in the blockbuster news that Facebook had allowed the detailed personal data of perhaps 87 million users to get into the hands of a data firm, Cambridge Analytica, bent on electing Donald Trump as president.

But what happened at the hearing instead was mostly a gentle, respectful tutorial from Zuckerberg on how the giant social media platform works.

“It would be cool to see Zuckerberg questioned by people who know how Facebook works,”

    • noonefromtampa

Most members of Congress are clueless about technology

      • And/or reality

      • the thing is, would want to be careful about regulating an industry that we are actually dominating the world at

and if the issue is selling information to other people that allows them to target messages we have been making that trade-off for years with free radio and TV. we have traded paying money for content for (in theory) our time in watching or listening to commercials. now, we’re just served up the infotainment and commercials that we want to see, instead of scatter shot.

      • That’s why they have staffers to prepare them. Sounds like the staffers are doing a poor job of it.

    • they have SSN, financial account numbers and PINs, family history, … my medical records?

or do they have my Facebook browsing data?

they have your wants, desires and unfulfilled dreams

        • that’s true. most of the ads served up to me on Facebook are car ads; almost all of them are, and the others are from home depot. how much of that is Google cookies and how much is facebook? dunno.

and if Cambridge Analytica wants it, I’ll burn their ears off talking about cars, in fact, my wife might welcome that so she doesn’t have to hear it

    • First of all, I only created a Facebook account to enter a contest to win Redskins tickets years ago, and I used fake personal info except for my email address. I haven’t accessed it since then. So I’m not on Facebook. But this guy Zuckerberg deserves to be grilled by the Senate even if they don’t really understand it, because Facebook did a horrible thing. And since there’s no way to stuff the genie back into the bottle, I have no problem with him getting yelled at by some Senators for a couple days. It’s the least he deserves.

    re bowling:
4 of us went bowling for a few hours about 6 months ago. it’s not cheap. bowling, “dinner”, drinks.

    • if you went to a movie and got “dinner” and drinks, would it be any cheaper?

      • walter_in_fallschurch

i think it would have been cheaper. though, i find bowling, well most anything, more entertaining than going to a movie. i’ll watch my movies at home, on a pretty big screen, with good food, bathroom and so forth readily at hand.

sort of similar to my perspective on attending games at fed ex.

        • dunno. haven’t been to the theatre since Deadpool and haven’t actually bought concession at a theater in like a decade.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

consessions at the theater are a lot like those at a ball park: $14 tickets, $12 hot dogs, $8 cokes….. x4 and all of a sudden we’re talking real money.

  • dc so good to see you again
    You were missed

  • There’s the wheel and, double-sided duct tape.

    Everything else is just, junk.

  • So all indications are that the Giants will take a QB with the #2 pick which I think is a big mistake if you’re keeping Eli Manning

they drafted Davis Webb last year, let him season for another year
draft Barkley and Hernandez, put some quality people around Eli

but let them draft a QB high, it is such a crap shoot at QB let them go down that road and hope it fails for them which is a win for us

    • I hope they pick a QB!

      • noonefromtampa

every QB taken 1-12 helps us get a better play

        • Yep, plus, if the Ginas take one it will guarantee them a year or two of turmoil as fans call for the rookie to start, Eli pouts, OBJ goes off the rails, etc.

          • agree. and then they’ll have to fire a coach and he’ll want “his guy” … process starts back at zero OR they have a fairly high chance of not have a great coach-QB combo

The States Where People Die Young

We’ve known for some time now that Americans are increasingly dying younger, but the scale and nature
of the problem has been a little bit murky. There was speculation that the downturn in American life expectancy was all thanks to “deaths of despair,” but some experts have said that might not be the full story, and that obesity and tobacco are still major factors in American mortality.

A new study out today in the Journal of the American Medical Association drills down into which states are showing increases in deaths among the young, and why. In doing so, it reveals a profound disparity among the states when it comes to both life expectancy and disability.

Most startlingly, since 1990, 21 states have seen an increase in the death rate among people aged 20 to 55. In five states—Kentucky, Oklahoma, New Mexico, West Virginia, and Wyoming—the probability of early death among young adults rose by more than 10 percent in that time frame. Meanwhile,in New York and California, young and middle-aged people became much less likely to die in the same time period. The authors note that opioids, alcoholism, suicide, and kidney disease—which can be brought on by diabetes and alcoholism—were the main factors leading to the increases in early deaths.

In 2016, the 10 states with the highest probability of premature death among 20- to 55-year-olds were West Virginia, Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Arkansas, New Mexico, Louisiana, Tennessee, and South Carolina.

Meanwhile, the 10 states with lowest probability of premature death among this age group were Minnesota, California, New
York, Connecticut, New Jersey, Washington, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Hawaii.

“Overall the nation and some of our states are falling behind other, less developed countries,” Ali Mokdad, a University of Washington epidemiologist who co-wrote the study, said in astatement. “The strain on America’s health resources is getting worse,
and the need for prevention services and greater access to and quality of medical care is increasing.”

Though not an immediate cause of death, major depression increased by more than 27 percent across the country between 1990 and 2016, and anxiety rose by 31 percent.

Some of the findings track with the “diseases of despair” hypothesis—the idea that Americans are self-medicating their misery with alcohol and drugs—but it’s also clear that Americans’ poor diets are a major part of the problem. Between 1990 and 2016, Alzheimer’s disease and opioid abuse became more prominent causes of death and disability, but so did diabetes. A poor diet was the leading cause of death, followed by tobacco use and high blood pressure.

“To an increasing degree, overweight, obesity, and sugary diets are driving up health-care costs and are costing Americans
years of healthy life,” said the University of Washington’s Chris Murray, who also authored the study, in a statement. “They are
    undermining progress toward better health.”

Become a Democrat — it’s good for your health!

      • No Punt Intended

        Yes.

        You are so stable.

      • Jobs. people don’t want to leave their family structure even if the “jobs” have left

      • walter_in_fallschurch

        what a coinkydink! startling.

        • So, become a Democrat and you’re saved? What sort of religion are you peddling?

          • walter_in_fallschurch

i’d say it’s more complex than JUST that. what’s your explanation for the correlation?

          • D_C just insinuated that becoming a Democrat was good for your health, posted a list, you propped it up. I know why these people do drugs and drink alcohol, eat corn syrup by the barrel, ect. You know why, as well, let’s not bullshit around about it.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

no. why? the answer is not “corn syrup”.

          • C’mon man, your Pop was a diplomat, you can do better than that.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

first, i can’t believe the shit people remember about what i post. yes – pop was a diplomat.

so…. are we going with “economic opportunity”? why are those less in those states?

            edited to add:
pop would totally, completely argue in favor of education. education, education, education.

          • You underestimate people.
economic opportunity is a step in the right direction. It’s a really long conversation.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

why is my suggestion of “education, education, education” underestimating people?

          • Do you really want your workers educated? Are you sure that’s what you want, Walter?

and stop trying to flip channels, or I’ll shut off your cable.

          • In the end, though, the society that you put forth, is a eggshell, with a soft mushy middle, and it will most certainly be devoured by natural law, without fanfare or fireworks, maybe just a casual passing of wind.

          • Lots of factors: the blue states expanded Medicare, generally have stronger safety nets, education, better hospitals, better diet, etc.

          • blue states tend to be where the old legacy of sea shipping was good. so the jobs were stable and population relatively dense. and if money is involved, money typically has profound implications on the variables in a population.

but there is also a Puritan legacy that helped them (interesting read on that: Albion’s Seed). the Puritans emphasized community and education and had a good level of pragmatism. And like the actual rules they had or not, the structure had profound implications on their community. It is many of those people who settled Kansas as Abolitionists and why Kansas is a basketball state while the surrounding states are all football states.

          • jobs.

          • C’mon Mike, let him read the whole thing, crack those knuckles and let her rip!

          • Jobs doesn’t quite explain it. Alabama and Arkansas have lower unemployment rates than CA, for example.

          • Squinnsamania, brother!

            @WIF Less incest; better healthcare.

          • Sure, nevermind those blue bloods in Connecticut “continuing the family name”. Kissin’ cousins, my ass, y’all invented that shit.

            #laughing@U

          • My goodness! What sort of devil taught that trash how to type?! – Bradford von Dueche

          • Squinnsamania, brother!

To be fair, I said less incest…

I would probably attribute it to better access to healthcare.

  • I will say that marijuana being legal, at least medically, could put a huge dent in the opioid epidemic.

    • there are multiple studies by medical professionals that say legalizing MJ will basically end the opioid crisis which is why the opioid industry is backing the anti-medical MJ wave

      • but it would just be a different way to treating the symptom, not the disease

though, if it made people eat more sugary, high carb food, then it might not be as good of an alternative as first imagined

    • Yep, and the regulated domestic production will create jobs, increase revenues to State coffers, and put a dent in Cartel revenues.

  • My grandfather was an alcoholic literally drank himself to death
I know well enough to NOT drink

    That’s the choice I make

If people choose to engage in activities that would result in addiction that’s the choice they make

    • Yea, except some of us were too young to understand that when we first made our poor choice… and then deal with the consequences for life. You can’t judge everyone through the lens of your own actions. People are different with different environments and circumstances. I didn’t know my father and grandfather for many years when I was young to know there was alcoholism. By the time I realized it ran in the family I already was one…

      • I obviously know now and I am very open with it with my 8 year old son. Trying to impress upon him that the deck is stacked against him.

        • Empathy and compassion. Two qualities sorely lacking in todays society

          • Thanks Obama

          • I think actually, empathy and compassion are overly expressed at “levels” where pragmatism is necessary, and under-expressed on the personal level where people are more individualistic and would rather have tough things be dealt with by faceless entities. and now, some people seem to think that that big faceless entity HAS to deal with it or it is a human hatecrime emotion bomb.

it’s jobs. it is as simple as that. women are not needed as critically for their traditional biological and societal purpose and in fact are socially demeaned if they emphasize it, and the same for men. So some of us are able to find ways to express themselves with leveraged-technology opportunities given chance, but many are not. And without natural selection there to manifest, the (clinically speaking) chaff is not generationally sloughed off and in fact, natural selection is working in reverse population wise, but in fast forward economically. we flounder with new ways to identify ourselves outside the traditional box, so we have all sort of dysfunction and social crisis. Because we no longer perceive a purpose and a productive way to meet it. Usually though, from a civilization historical standpoint, this isn’t a problem for too long. Because some-thing will come in and burn it all down and start over.

          • Can I buy some pot from you?

          • YES!

      • Every family I ever knew fairly well has had these issues and i’m just one person.

        • I’m typically wary of people that claim to have a perfect family life… because I have never actually met one whose was

    • Was my guess, that or Dad. Good on you for breaking the cycle.

  • Opiates , heroin, and meth pour in over the border and in our ports . You can’t turn your back on that shit from a law enforcement standpoint . That stuff ruins lives and destroys families as well as killing people . Weed is a different story .

    • walter_in_fallschurch

well, of course. but how do you draw a line, philosophically, and say this drug is good (or ok) and this is bad?

    • Buck, it’s hard to understand your point from this office chair.
Execute traffickers of Heroin, Meth, Cocaine, Opiates. Catch them with a shipment, gun them down, save the rhinos!

    • I’m in favor of domestically produced opioids.

It’s stupid to import that shit.

      • laws are changing for medical providers and that’s a good thing . They are over prescribed, but necessary .

  • The war on drugs has been an abysmal failure. Need to treat drug usage as a medical issue, not a criminal one. Ron Paul has the right idea in my mind.

    • Ron Paul is a lunatic.

    • I’m with you

    • Careful. You got dudes in here that believe addiction is a choice.

      • Addiction is a genetic condition. Taking the drug or drinking the drink in the first place is a choice.

Donald Trump said it best when asked why he doesn’t drink – he said something to the effect of, there’s alcoholism in my family, maybe I’d be an alcoholic, maybe not; if I don’t drink I don’t have to worry about it. That’s essentially my position.

      • put a mouse in a place where it has nothing to do, and it will suck the water bottle with the drugs in it preferably over the clean one

give it a place where it has something to do something and it stops using the drugs

*I believe the drug was heroin, but don’t hold me to that, and I believe the study was discussed on the Freakonomics podcast some time ago

    • to win the war on drugs you would have to treat the demand side of it more like the criminal (like the supply side) and less the victim. and possibly, create a war so the kids would have something productive to do with their lives.

      • The demand side is ever there. Ever wonder why? Perhaps we need to look at it differently. Doing the same thing, over and over, and expecting different results..you get the idea.

  • Legalize everything

    Resuscitate no one

  • I really, really need to get this draft preview posted.

  • One day….one day….a pound of great weed will be in line with the price of a pound of great coffee.

    • Hopefully never.

      • It’s coming dude. No stopping this train.

I’ll come by for a visit. We can smoke cannabis and shoot guns.

        • oh yeah, that’s how my cousin got shot in the foot

        • I believe Texas is trying to deny concealed carry permits to individuals with a medical marijuana license.

Because you know, People who smoke marijuana can’t be trusted to own a gun. Better yet, they lose their right to own a gun, or at least a concealed carry permit.

        • It’s not coming. I think it’s only coming in the minds of those who advocate for it. Nothing good will coming from legalizing marijuana, and I don’t really care about raising more tax revenue for the government to waste.

          • So to be consistent, you’re against alcohol as well correct?

          • Yes, that’s correct, although clearly the train left the station a hundred years ago about alcohol; plus, it’s a multi-billion dollar industry now.

I personally don’t drink alcohol, which you know if you’ve listened to the show.

          • Applaud your consistency, disagree with your opinion but that’s ok. Alcohol is far more deadly than Marijuana.

          • I think people who drink Orange Sunkist all day should not be allowed to own guns. The sheer amount of sugar in those drinks can induce a diabetic reaction, rendering poor judgement, and making the individual a threat to society and himself.

          • I actually limit myself to 1 soda per week, Monday – Friday, and then a couple on the weekends. That’s my rule, because otherwise I’d drink the stuff all the time.

          • I disagree

          • me too, and that voice is growing…

          • We’re a nation of drug users. It’s definitely coming. 30 states and counting.

Texas looks like a fool and a hypocrite for fighting against the liberty to self-determine.

          • 1. They’ve already resolved the QA process for hemp food-grade products for those who do not want THC and also legally pass a drug test. The Canadians even have a label for this for food stuffs they export to the US.
            2. Politicians love tax money
            3. Seems to me that the smoking regulations that apply to tobacco will apply generally to weed, and based on State and local laws. so, most places you’d not come in contact with it… legally anyway… just like now the only time I’m around a smoker is if I am behind one in my car on the freeway in a traffic jam… that is, almost never.
            4. What I don’t see as figured out, or haven’t read up on is how edibles and injestables will be treated, because that pathway is in fact, hallucinogenic to a degree. I guess you treat it like public intoxication? Require labeling like herbal supplements?

The 77-year-old strip club owner with stage 4 lung cancer already has a recommendation from his state-certified physician to do it. But the Florida Department of Health won’t let him.

In an unprecedented lawsuit challenging the state’s interpretation of Amendment 2 and asserting what he says is his own constitutional right, Redner is fighting to grow medical marijuana from his home in Tampa. After months of litigation against the health department, ending in a short trial last month, the judge is expected to rule any day.

      Serious question here.

      • He’s no longer a politician, so there’s that.

Wanna talk about grocery stores, cupcake?

        • No Punt Intended

Neither is Obama or Hillary but that never stops you from whining and crying on their behalves about the man who won the election. All you do is cry and complain and your pain brings me joy.

    • He just got paid.

If we want to do that, have cannabis treated like every other pharmaceutical for the purposes of medicine and have the FDA regulate it. then there would still be the gray area of herbal supplements. The problem with cannabis pragmatically is that the ingestion and inhalation pathways result in a very different experience for the user.

Here’s the thing. At least in part, industrial hemp/cannabis (heavy on the hemp) is going to be necessary because when the world chose batteries over fuel cells, it meant the collapse of the biofuels industry; which is now almost inevitable. The only thing that would revert this would be a global shortage of lithium or unobtainium or whatever it is the batteries or supercapacitors that can be nearly instantly charged will be made out of. So there, at least, will be a massive compromise FOR the ag lobby coming soon, and that should be the door that kicks wide open the hemp industry in the US, rather than imports from Canadia.

Corn and soybean farmers rejoice! And be ready to grow hops and hemp.

  • After using the “Find My iPhone’’ app to track down his wife, a New York man entered a stranger’s home and filmed his unfaithful wife in bed with another man. The incident resulted in multiple charges against the scorned husband and a potential prison sentence.

However, Sean Donis, 37, was cleared of all charges on Monday by Rockland County Supreme Court Justice Kevin Russo, who found him not guilty after about 20 minutes of deliberation, reported the New York Post.

Donis had faced up to 15 years behind bars on charges of burglary and unlawful surveillance in the case.

The incident took place in April 2016 when Donis used the app to track an iPad, which was with his wife, Nancy Donis, 38. Nancy had taken the iPad the home of her boyfriend, Albert Lopez.

Lopez was the COO of Gotham City Orthopedics in Clifton, New Jersey, at the time, and Nancy Donis was his billing manager.

    • The breaking in and filming her part was pretty dumb. Could’ve just nailed her coming out of the house and saved himself the criminal charges.

  • Howdy. Good to see y’all staying away from politics in my absence. 😉

  • We have Aldi stores opening around in the area now, have not been into once yet

I mainly go to Costco and Publix, occasionally the Super Walmart since it is open 24 hours

but now I read that at our Walmart some criminals followed some lady home tried to cut her throat, robbed her, went back to Walmart and bought a bunch of stuff with her credit cards

    • If only she’d been licensed to carry a firearm.

      • if she didn’t notice someone following her for a couple of miles, I don’t know if a gun would have helped her

    • Aldi’s is okay for what they are. (they own and operate Trader Joes and adhere to that standard) It’s certainly not bad food. Damn sure is a limited selection though. Just, be sure to bring grocery bags and a quarter.

      No quarter. No cart.

      • You do get the quarter back though.

      • I don’t think they own Trader Joes, but I think it’s in the family (meaning separate brothers own them or something like that) trader joes is sorta like the hippie version of Aldi; and Aldi is the convenience-store sized Costco.

        • Some of their non-food items, like their food, is pretty awful. Some of it, not so bad. In that regard, I’d treat it like Harbor Freight. you wouldn’t want to buy anything critical from their hardlines.

    • Aldi is ok. We have a few of them here. Kind of AC weird setup but it had the best price on toilet paper by far.

      • If it weren’t out of the way, I’d go there just for eggs.

    • walter_in_fallschurch

they (those not seeking reelection) are the only ones who feel they have “cover” (i.e., no need to support trump) to speak the truth. outgoing senate/house republicans have been harsh on trump. why…..?

should be shameful to trump supporters… but is not in the least. a conscience is needed for shame. sorry…. my bad for assuming the possibility of shame…

      • As if democrats in Washington have ever shown a shred of conscience of decency. Come on man, seriously. No Washington politician is decent.

  • I don’t know how people don’t understand that all firearms kill people, from my lowly .22 rifle that my dad gave me when I was 13 to a 105mm howitzer.

      Logic be damned

    • Everyone knows that. They only make you think that others don’t as part of the agenda

      • Well, if you listen to idiots like Nancy Pelosi without knowing any better, you’d think a standard 5.56 mm shell is some sort of nuclear-tipped star wars shell that can blow up the death star rather than the average small-caliber rifle shell that it actually is.

        • You say small caliber like it’s not a deadly as a frack meat grinder.

          • Did you not read my original post? “all firearms kill people”.

          • Did you see me say you’re saying small caliber like it’s not a deadly as frak meat grinder?

You went in the opposite direction of Pelosi.

          • Nancy Pelosi has proven that she doesn’t know the first thing about weapons, or shells, or, well, anything except promoting her own self interest. She’s the worst of the worst in Washington. No redeeming qualities whatsoever.

          • And some do a much better job than others.

          • ban it

  • I’m for sure going to make my next firearm purchase an “AR”-style weapon, just out of spite. I went and looked this weekend. Thinking perhaps S&W M&P 15, but also thinking about maybe moving up in caliber to 7.62 mm. Does anyone who knows what they’re talking about have thoughts as to model?

      • Any particular model number that you’re aware of? The gun shop I went to was really, really crowded and had probably a thousand weapons on display, so I actually didn’t get to look at everything I wanted.

        • Nothing comes to mind just that Sig puts out a great product

        • are there place that let you shoot them first?

          • Well, you can’t just take a gun for a test-fire like you’re test driving a car, no, although most nicer indoor ranges will let you rent a variety of weapons to shoot on their range.

          • well, there you go

unlike a rental car, which will likely be at most barely above the entry level of the model, you can prob rent what you’d buy and shoot it. prob makes sense, if the dealer offers to take them up on a weekend test drive of the actual car.

I mean, a .45 sounds great and cool, until you shoot a few guns and realize you’d almost certainly rather have a 9 or 10 mm. I mean, unless you’re in the business of having to penetrate the engine block of an oncoming vehicle… then you go with the .45. And the .38 that james bond uses? dangerous as all get out. be lucky not to shoot your own foot off. hair trigger. pass on that one. those kinds of things you only learn by shooting it first.

the thing is, though. would you ever use an AR 15 style? not saying you wouldn’t, but ever now and then when I’m off my pills I get on a jag where I start looking at trading in my car for something that does this or that that my current vehicle doesn’t do or do well. and later, I realize what I am doing is identity fixing and not going after my prudent need/use. yeah, I’d like to have a Merc GLK or whatever rather than a commuter car, but that would set me back on our financial plan 2 years, and be a big kick in the nuts when the County sends out the tax bill. what I’m saying is, if you need to make a gooey mess out of an intruder, buy a shotgun. better fuel mileage.

          • I have a .38/.357 revolver that now has an extremely light trigger on it, after I got a trigger job done to it. It’s the one that I’m not wild about letting people shoot unless I’m sure they know what they’re doing.

Do I “need” an AR? No. Do I just want one? Absolutely, primarily as a middle-finger gesture to those who want to take it away from me.

  • The Rev. Jesse Jackson called Tuesday for expansion of a boycott he is waging against Kroger to protest grocery store closures in minority communities.

He also said he wasn’t sure whether he believed Kroger’s claims that a store in this city’s Walnut Hills neighborhood was unprofitable before it was closed last year. More than three-quarters of Walnut Hills residents are black, and the neighborhood’s median household income in the 2010 Census was $29,000, 15% less than the city as a whole.

Kroger closed its Walnut Hills store a year ago after 34 years of operation — more than 20 of them unprofitable. Company officials said the store was projected to lose $900,000 last year if it had stayed open on top of the nearly $5 million it had lost since 2010.

Sounds like Kroger discriminates by preferring green over black or green over red

However, it soon became clear on Tuesday morning that MSC Armonia was coming in way too hot and that one or both forward anchors were deployed in an apparently desperate bid to check the 65,000-ton vessel’s momentum.

Moments later, Armonia crashed, tearing a section out of the dock and briefly running aground on the beach behind.

The accident was captured on video and posted by gCaptain, a news service focusing on the marine industry.

      1) New blood… I haven’t seen anyone new here since we migrated and

  • In the wake of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, a school district in a suburb of the northwest Pennsylvania city of Erie is arming its 500 teachers with baseball bats, reports CBS Erie affiliate WSEE-TV. “It is the last resort,” said Millcreek Schools Superintendent William Hall, “but it is an option and something we want people to be aware of.”

According to Hall, the 16-inch bats were distributed to each teacher following an in-service training day on how to respond to school shootings.

“We passed them out, with the goal being we wanted every room to have one of these,” said Hall. “Unfortunately, we’re in a day and age where one might need to use them to protect ourselves and our kids.”

Hall says the bats are primarily “symbolic”, but are now an option for teachers to use, should they need to fight back in a school shooting.

  • Isaiah Wynn Scouting Report
    By Charlie Campbell

    Dependable pass protector
    Ability to bend

    Has quick enough feet
    Can bend at the knee
    Experienced against good competition
    Intelligent

    Weaknesses:
    Lacks length
    Short height
    Short arms (33 1/8 inch)
    Will have to move inside

Summary: The 2018 NFL Draft is weak at the offensive tackle position, but it has some strength on the interior of the offensive line, and one of the exciting prospects there is Wynn. In 2017, Wynn was a force for the Georgia Bulldogs as their potent rushing attack led them to an SEC Championship, a playoff victory, and almost a National Championship. Wynn was rock solid as a pass protector and a road grader in the ground game.

As a run blocker, Wynn has aggression and blocks with a mean streak. Finding nasty bullies up front is getting more difficult as the uptempo and spread offenses have changed the game. Wynn is a throwback who blocks through the whistle, pushes defenders around, buries them into the ground, and finishes them off with violence. Wynn also has developed strength to push defenders out of their gaps and open holes in the ground game. With his heavy hands, Wynn is able to sustain his blocks after shocking defenders backward. Wynn additioanlly has the quickness and athleticism to get to the second level. He can pull and would be a fit in either a zone or power-man scheme.

In pass protection, Wynn has the quickness and agility to mirror speed rushers. He also has a strong base to hold up against bull rushes. While Wynn has talent and technique, he lacks length, which could be problematic for him in the NFL. Longer defensive ends and rush linebackers could give him problems in being able to shed his blocks.

  • Okay folks, we’ll have the OL draft preview from Adam later today, and then an It’s Just Business episode tomorrow.

  • LOL at this post Allen was not in charge while Shanny was here suggesting otherwise makes you stupid.

    • Bruce is one step out the door. NFC champ or better. Book it

    • walter_in_fallschurch

that whole robbert griffin era is an apparent black hole in terms of who was in charge. they were all over it in year one, then distancing themselves in 2 and beyond. what a fall from grace that was for robert.

      • I think that was the era where Snyder stepped back, then, for the moment … the super franchise QB moment, stepped back in. And since that time, took even 1 step further back.

        • walter_in_fallschurch

i think that is pretty close to what happened. but, who the hell knows? we should not be wondering who is in charge.

    • Of course he was in charge. Bruce Allen was the senior team executive. Plus, I mentioned in the column that Bruce had Shanny picking players.

  • Bad Reputation

I am really intrigued by what the Giants are gonna do at 2. They have a declining Eli….the 2nd pick, which they usually never have because they are usually decent each year. Do they miss out on possibly 4-5 guys that could succeed Eli, or what? If this isn’t the draft they feel like their guy is their at QB, they are gonna have to use mad resources in the future to trade up to get a guy another year. So I feel like they need to get the guy they like at 2. Or if they can move back to like 4 or 5 and get the guy they want. Gonna be crazy on draft day I think.

    • They are in a position where, as a franchise, you’d want to take a LT or QB or EDGE.

    • the first two picks will be interesting because they could really change the draft, especially if neither is a QB

    • Eli will play at least 2 more years. They have a 3rd rd QB who didnt see the field last year. Barkley or Chubb here…. 2 reasons why we need Guice. Browns are going Mayfield w #1….

      • I don’t think Darnold or Rosen want to play in Cleveland

so, they could be down to Allen or Mayfield, which means, they prob could go QB at #4

The Giants could trade that spot still to the Bills or Dolphins

        • Mayfield will go 1 pretty sure…regardless Chubb or Barkley #2 my guesses. Giants need both whichever 1. Allen will not go top pick.

  • Politicians picking and choosing which laws they enforce is the road to anarchy

  • walter_in_fallschurch

i think pretty much any uni looks pretty good when you’re kicking the other team’s butt. skins can’t really count on that factor.

  • 15 days till the draft

  • walter_in_fallschurch

at the end of last season i was so bitter about the skins’ lead balloon of a season. the further and further is get from it, i can develop rationalizations like, “oh, the injuries” and “bad calls” (new orleans false grounding call), etc….

i do think injuries were huge. surely that made at least a game or 2 difference.

    steve/alex et al:
is there some way to discern a metric for just how injured the skins were last season? it should also figure in the difference btween losing aaron rodgers for 8 games and losing a “regular” player for 8 games.

    • There’s metrics out there on it, if you look it up, # of games missed, # of games missed by starters things like that. Most have skins at #1 or #2 worst injured team in that regard Houston I think was worse off.

      • walter_in_fallschurch

just to be clear…. i want YOU GUYS to research this and do an article…. eagles lost their starting QB and won the superb owl.

        • and they replaced their starter with someone who actually had playoff experience and success. they might have actually improved their chances with Foles in the short term.

    • the starters they can put out there can play with anyone.

Things they need to work on:
      1. The injury bug under Gruden and across his coaching has a trend line that reveals it isn’t likely all chance, that in fact, his philosophies lead to injuries. That needs to change.
      2. While it isn’t sexy, they beat the Saints if they can get an “and short.” And nobody has the confidence they can. And that needs to change. Don’t need to be a 1980’s Big 8 rushing team. But they need to be more physical in the running game when they need to be.

Get those things done, and this is a talented enough team to win 10-11 games. Unless Alex Smith stinks.

    • There was a pff stat a few weeks back that showed it

  • When I pick D James in my mocks its only because of BPA. Skins should lean this direction vs PON imo. However often Guice is there as well w 1st pick and thats why I pick him too. Straight up BPA and also a PON . I know some of you guys all in on DL w 1st pick…but Im telling you NC State for 1 will have 3 NFL starters from their DLine. Bruce or Doug needs to call Hankins toooday and offer up. Act like a ‘GM’ either one. Need skills top draft picks !!

    • PoP

      Position of Priority

The formula should be BPA in a PoP in the first two rounds, and then transition to BPA in PON and eventually you’re looking for guys who you think can play at least ST. If you’re set at PoP, and PoN, then the algorithm is more purely BPA. But BPA is rarely an independent variable.

  • Color rush has to go. That shit is horrible.

  • I’m looking forward to the complete 180 by both sides of the sanctuary city debate when/if the assault rifle ban passes and certain localities choose not to enforce it.

    • walter_in_fallschurch

his name always reminds me of a scene from some movie where someone told someone that someone else (how’s that for specifics!) was “incommunicado”, and the dizzy (blonde?) replies, “where is that?” (brian dennehy may have been involved)

      • …and then, one of the guys, in response, points to his… crown jewels…
        and then…
        “Walter WHAT ARE YOU WATCHING!!!”
        *fumbles with the remote*
I THOUGHT THIS WAS A COMMERCIAL on the NFL NETWORK!!!
*in the background: Big Voice says, “Thank you, but your free preview of Cinemax has now ended.”

    • I think half or more of their offensive line retired

    • Said he’s got liver and kidney failure. Which is terrible.

  • Jags are re doing their Unis. I dont know about the color rush but would really like the Skins to add some type of pizzazz to their unis. Mustard yellow …man….

  • No more color rush Unis on Thursday nights.

I like the red on red look for the skins but they completely shit the bed every time they wear it.

    • Your asking. But Nike Football League don’t care. They are gonna do it again in ’18, if you like it or not.

I’d not mind color rush if it wasn’t done in such a half assed way.

      • I actually like that the skins gave the middle finger to those yellow monstrosities

        • As do I. A handful of teams get a good color rush uniform each year. Pat’s have that one that’s kinda a throwback inspired. Rams all yellow look is too if you know your history.

But too many teams are just wearing all white as their “look” that’s lazy and not a color.

I think Color rush would be cool if teams more uniforms were based on throwbacks, and if every team weren’t all Red/Blue/Green/Yellow head to toe, but they changed it up some. The best uniforms always IMO have pants that don’t match the jersey give’s the team’s look some balance.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

i would much, much, much, much, much (10 more times) prefer “throwback thursday” to whatever the hell is going on now.

          • As it’s called in uniform circles, this is called a onesie or pajama look.

          • walter_in_fallschurch

speaking of onesies, we just had a new baby relative born – i believe this person would be my “great nephew” (my nephew’s son). my wife got him some great onesies: one evokes an apple ipod feel, but it says, “i pooed”. another says, “there’s a nap for that”. silly, i know, but i enjoyed the puns.

          • Yes that’s your great nephew, and yes, there’s a lot of “fun” hipster type baby cloths out there now. We, really my wife, got our goddaughter a Misfits onesie.

    • walter_in_fallschurch

thank god for small favors! all those rush unis were terrible.

      added:
oh, rats…. i guess you were *hoping* for no color-rush unis, not stating that it was the case. anyway, those things are horrible.

  • Bruce isnt getting it done bottom line. Nor did Vinny. I’d give this crew this year…if no NFC champ game or better then clean house. If Philly can turn it around in 2 years and the Pats can win their division every year but 1 since 2003…it will be time for Dan to get real somehow.

  • I dont see any fault in a player throwing in their 2 cents worth on draft picks within reason. Surprising a bit but nothing ‘wrong’ with it. Especially in todays social world.

    • Amen!

    • I don’t have a problem with it, but think it would be better if DJ went to Jay & Doug and said, hey coach/Not-GM guy, as a team captain I have some strong feelings on what we need to take this defense to the next level, I would like 3 minutes to give you my opinion on the issue, the headline for my pitch: Fat Guys.

        • They should take team votes on picks and wannabe picks. Anonomously. Throw them in the hat w the scouts suggestions…..and Bruce’s

          • I’m not going that far, but I got no issues if your teams leaders go to their coaches and say, we need X/Y/C. Coaches and GM’s can take it under consideration or not.
The no questions asked, top down hierarchy is a relic of monarchy

          • Thats why I see no prob w DJs tweets

          • No problem, think it would be better if it wasn’t public.

          • you see I like the frankness of the players in public. Otherwise you get such boring interviews that are politically correct and everyone knows the answers before the questions are even asked. How enlightening is that? How riveting?

          • Totally fair, maybe best if they were able to do both.

      • why are we allowing immigrants from one country to completely break the rules that every other immigrant had to follow?

        • I’m not a xenophobic nationalist.

Just showing up and doing your thing is the American way.

Immigrants have been here all along. And here we all are, carrying on with our lives without any interference.

          • Nobody (almost) has a problem with immigrants, provided they follow the process for citizenship. If you are here on a work visa and don’t apply for citizenship, when your visa expires it’s time to go.

          • Ask a legal immigrant about that some times. A lot of people have a problem with them, legal or not. I work with a guy, a month doesn’t go bye with out him being insulted for being foreign.

          • Well sure there are always gonna be racist assholes.

          • The amazing thing is every other story they seem to think he’s from the wrong continent.

          • I never said people aren’t pricks. I’m saying…immigrants, whatever their legal status, are no bother to us.

I’ll tell you who’s always mucking things up and making life a pain in the butt…it’s the frign citizens at birth.

They are constantly in the damn way anymore.

    • What cities?

      • I don’t know the cities I just know that the Democratic governor just vetoed a bill that would ban Sanctuary cities so he is in favor of them they’re coming careful what you ask for

        • Based on the info I sited above, there are no actual sanctuary cities in VA. But Richmond and Alexandra are probably the closest thing too it.

        • Richmond, Virginia Beach and Norfolk are likely candidates.

        • Havent heard of anything…but certainly hope not. Regardless the illegals make every city a sanctuary.. just not advertised by govt.

    • Did some research some interesting things to note here, 1896 law on the books means all criminals ID’s are already shared with DHS.

    • More flexibility in the draft, less flexiblilty when it comes to re-signing, Crowder, Scherff & Smith

      • There will have to be some tough choices made no doubt but Hankins and Allen on that line together would be tremendous, and it’s a must as far as I’m concerned. . It can be done, other teams do it all the time rework current players contracts be creative.

    • I love the idea but first we have to have a smart front-office pay Hankins. Round two I would draft a tight end round 3 inside linebacker
I could flip flop around 2 and round 3 take the linebacker in round 2 and the tight end round 3 depends on who’s there

  • “I know for a fact that the Redskins like Payne more than Vea….but I wouldn’t be mad if they drafted Vea”- Chris Cooley

    • Payne seems to be more well rounded player in that he’s a better pass rusher

These Alabama players seem to like being around fellow Alabama players
Maybe drafting Payne elevates Anderson and Allen

      And he’s only 20

      That’s huge

    • I like Payne better too. Vita takes plays off

  • HTTR65…

They drafted Jon Allen in 2017
They drafted Matt Ioannidis in 2015

….not enough…but it’s not like they haven’t tried as of late. He needs to STFU.

    • ion we got lucky with and he was a late round pick. Allen’s good really good but we need another really good player to go along with him. I will agree to disagree and think some players today need to toughen up. Again he wasn’t calling out players he was calling out the front office
I’m trying to disagree without being disagreeable. Respectfully disagreeing how about that LOL

  • Buck, have you watched any of McPhee?

  • I have zero problem with DJ calling out the organization to draft a defensive lineman instead of a defensive back or secondary player. Somebody needs to tell those fools in the organization that we need defensive lineman not a secondary player you could have Sean Taylor in the secondary and have scrubs on the line and it won’t matter

    • I don’t think a player criticizing the team in public is a good idea for anything . Creates more BS .

  • LOUD NOISES!!!

  • On the Dexter point, it would be fuckin’ great if some of this McPhee dude’s violence rubs off on Smith and Anderson, Lanier, ect. He’s not the world champion on the edge, but he has a nice punch and plays like a grown-ass man.

  • If someone taught Dex how to use talk to text, he would get down, and wouldn’t have to bother reading replies, it’d be like a radio broadcast transcript. Probably very entertaining.

  • If Mark Murphy would have said something about Dave Butz or Dexter Manley, ya’ll know how that would have ended.

  • I think players saying dumb things on social media is just something that’s going to happen. DJ would have been better off keeping his mouth shut but he’s a 26 year old who’s hooked on social media. He’s gonna talk. Teams have to adjust to the new media age. I’m pretty sure Dexter Manley would have said some crazy stuff on Twitter if it had been around back then

    • I’m pretty sure Dexter wouldn’t have been able to figure out how to use Twitter if it had been around back then. Drugs to awful things to people.

      • Dexter didn’t even know how to read and write and I bet his tweets would have made more sense than some of the one’s I read from players these days. Need a translator

  • So what’s DJ running his mouth about now?

  • Cooley said this morning that Fitzpatrick and James play the exact same position Swearinger plays. The Redskins need everything on defense. I would prefer line…but if James is there, you gotta take him and tell Swearinger to kiss your ass.

    • Adam Taraschke keeps telling me that James is more of a SS than a FS in a cover 3, which is actually what DJ is, too, although injuries forced him to play the high/FS last year. So, yes, they are similar.

    • no offense Rick but I will take DJs opinion over all y’all any day of the week he’s out there playing.

  • I mean…I understand he’s passionate…but we’ve all watched this team for years. Players talk shit and don’t deliver. They were 7-9. I don’t want to hear nuthin’ from nobody till OTA’s. It would have been a bit different if he was asked a question in an interview.

    • Maybe he was trying to make a point of distraction to keep the FO from drafting his replacement.

    • Isn’t this his last year on this contract?

      • Swearinger? No, he has through 2019.

        • Thanks. Thought he might be trying to convince the FO that Derwin James is not the way to go.

          • if the front office is seriously considering drafting someone in the secondary versus a defensive lineman someone needs to straighten those fools out I’m happy DJ is doing it.

    • Come on man! DJ is not the problem with the defense it’s the weak defensive line. He’s absolutely correct in his criticism of our inept front office.

  • DJ Swearinger needs to shut the fuck up!

The Redskins highlight in this, the team sent cheerleaders to some random dudes house:

A former cheerleader for the Washington Redskins recalled one especially unusual assignment.

    Several
years ago, she said, she and five teammates were told to drive to an
address the Redskins had given them. To their surprise, it was not a
business — it was a house. Inside, there was no party, no charity event,
or even a large gathering of people. There were seven men in their 40s
who quickly sized up the cheerleaders.

“O.K., who’s single and who’s married?” said the homeowner, according to the former cheerleader.

    The
men were drinking and asked the women to join in, but they declined.
Then the women did a two-minute dance for the men in the basement and
spent the rest of the afternoon walking around the house or having
awkward conversations with the men while they were watching an N.F.L.
    game on TV.

very interesting article on how millennial employees impacted the culture at one very large US firm

    https://work.qz.com/1217854/pwcs-millennial-employees-led-a-rebellion-and-their-demands-are-being-met/

    • Squinnsamania, brother!

Now mothers are encouraged to come to work with their children; at least drop them off with a bagged lunch and promptly pick them up 5:00.

      • You must not work in a law firm.

        • Squinnsamania, brother!

No. I’m general counsel (spent numerous years at a firm). And, that kind of shit would never go over at my company.

Also, was kidding. Just remember reading some articles where millenials’ parents were calling on behalf of their children who were interviewing with companies. Friggin ridiculous.

          • General counsel to who ? Somebody is getting ripped off.

          • Oh, I know you were kidding. I also figured you would understand how utterly uncaring law firms are when it comes to things like family.

    • What people need to adapt to, millennials have largely been adults now for 10-15 years. It’s the next wave we need to worry about, because we got no clue what they will want to do. Millennial’s we know what they will be, we know what major events influenced their belief system, the war on terror and housing crash of 2007, largely pushed that generation far left. Just like how X’ers will always be impacted by the cold war, and ended up fairly conservative.

But I think the generation afterwards is a bit more of a wild card.

      • I think a huge mistake we make is to over-analyze it, and mistake the demographic data as a whole. All generations to a degree grow up and become adult. But, because Gen X is bigger than Gen Y, the massive urban shift that normally would accompany non-children people is much greater; and they stay less-adult longer, and more don’t have children, all these are tweaks, but what we are seeing at least in my neighborhood is Gen Y people with young kids moving to suburbia, just like the previous 2 generations before them did. Later in life, sure, and they’re buying less (and the retiring generation is now more apt to rent their old home out it seems, when they move on to their dream home in some retirement Mecca, but maybe that is a DMV thing), but they are nonetheless pushing out the baby boomers and filling up the suburbs again. But that’s all relative. That all can be happening and the bulk population movements can hide some of these normal things.

HOWEVER. We have an intern here who is 22 years old. I’m ack socially retar***. But this guy? He can’t put together two sentences about what he likes, what he wants to do, he just wants a job.

And let’s not discount the other thing that is causing them problems. The Baby Boomers racked up national and private debt, but now that they’ve kinda been shocked by the system, they’re living longer, working longer, and not giving up their place, especially if it an enjoyable, sought-after job, so those late millennial also face a backlog of professionals who for a decade themselves have been waiting to move up the ladder, and once they do, instead of a job opening, it’s replaced by automation created by some of the more lucky millennial. We may just be watching natural selection taking place, and it’s not perfect or fair, but over thousands of years, it will assure only the best genetics survives, and maybe we’re entering an accelerated moment in time for this completely natural, organic solution? And the antidote might be poison after only a few decades?

        • I think the emphasis on the commonality of these made-up generations is pretty silly.

        • Agreed in any demographic data there’s huge variations. And one has to be able to understand, just because currently the 18-29 group leans more 1 way or another vs the 30-39 groups we’re usually talking changes of 10-15% at the most. But as someone who loves sociology and political science, I chew through that kind of info all the time, and just file it in the back of the brain.

Florida may not be an ideal place for millennials when it comes to economic opportunity. According to a recent study released by WalletHub, Florida is the No. 10 worst state for millennials.

“Millennials have come of age and entered the workforce in the shadow of the Great Recession, which has significantly reduced their job prospects and earning potential for decades to come,” the study said.

The study ranked each state based on affordability, education and health, quality of life, economic opportunity and civic engagement. Florida has fourth-lowest percentage of millennials overall, the second-lowest percentage of millennials with health insurance and the fourth-highest percentage of millennials living with their parents.

The best states for millennials include the District of Columbia at No. 1, North Dakota at No. 2 and Minnesota at No. 3. The worst states included New Mexico, followed by West Virginia and Mississippi.

    • North Dakota is a surprise at #2. I assume its due to oil. But as I understand it large numbers of Millennial aren’t going into the Oil industry for moral reasons.

          • in today’s world you have Googles and Apples and Amazons, but all you really need are a handful of reasonably successful startup companies, maybe have 1-2 get moderate success, a few hundred employees, throw in a medium to major university, and boom… millennials everywhere. in part, it helps that the already established white collar professionals are hesitant to move there from the more major cities. one issue is psychological. If you can take a 20% pay cut, but have that 80% go 10% further, that’s great, but there’s a psychological block to that. And also, people with high market real estate make a ton of silent money every year, and don’t think I haven’t thought about that. I can limp along here in the DMV until I retire, then boom. Slide in and over-bid someone on their dream home in some nice little country town with good medical facilities a reasonable distance. Some dude who’s scrimped, worked 80 hours a week, took care of his family, his sister’s kids after her divorce, and finally, his dream home on that small acreage goes up for sale… and then me… in an orange general-lee painted Mazda Prius pickup suv hybrid (they’ll have them by then) rolls in, yells yeah haw, throws a sack of money out the window at the Realtor as I drive by and roll in to the new estate. Hmmm… that got a bit off course, didn’t it?

          • LOL
But yes, any time the wife panics a bit about our home and all I remind her that we’ve lived there 5 years and the value is now 100K more than what we purchased it for, when we “retire” that’s gonna be like gravy.

thanks for the article. Puts a few things in perspective. Most effective leaders have a vision and are able to communicate that vision to their subordinates or members of the team. I don’t recall Dan or BA mentioning any type of vision. I thought SM said and did exactly that but we know how that went. At this point you hope for some luck. you hope they are good in the draft – so far they’ve been doing oaky – decent at Free Agency – average to below average thus far – and are smart/savy with salary cap – excellent at that.
The frustrating part is there seems to be no innovativeness out of redskins park. How is a top 2-3 valued team so far behind in biometrics, weight and nutrition management? How is that building so old and all this time never having a practice bubble to ensure the best facilities for one of the oldest franchises in US pro sports history? Its like they care but not really. Or they just don’t know what they are doing.

    • Holacracy!

    • Squinnsamania, brother!

      decent at Free Agency
      ____________

Meh. They’ve generally been cautious, so avoided many of the big mistakes of the past. On the other hand, haven’t really used it to improve this team all that much. Basically been non-players this year.

    • The fundamental problem, at its essence, is that Dan Snyder isn’t a good leader. Consistently winning professional sports teams have one thing in common: good ownership with a vision and a philosophy – Yankees, Celtics, Lakers, Steelers, Patriots, etc.

    • is that the HOT mix recycling technology?

something like that (without, at least in the proposal, the special truck) might have crossed a desk I might possibly know about what seems like 10 years ago for a research grant maybe perhaps possibly, though it crossed and could have maybe gone to a more relevant department in another building. possibly.

      • but the question remains, if technology wipes out the pothole industry, what do we do will all the almost-legal migrant workers and inmates who do that work? we’re already steps closer to robots picking fruit. and the choice to go to batteries from fuel cells + biofuels will likely drop the bottom out of many agricultural industries where those same workers thrive (at least, for a few weeks a year).

      • Could use that on the park road by my house. We got a few potholes that are probably 10 inch’s deep, bigger than a tire.

  • Appreciate the work Steve put into this. I’d be curious to see how the Skins fare against other teams over similar 16 year period.

In all seriousness, I think Poona will be a great get for whichever team drafts him. Dude has an intense work ethic, and gives his all on every play. He holds his ground, can get into the backfield, and never stops.

You just can’t coach that. It’s a mindset.

          • From what I’ve read, he’s an UDFA candidate. You want a bit shorter in interior DL for leverage purposes, but this dude is 5’11”.

          • I like to hate on U of Choxas players, but if he’s there in the 7th, prob pull that trigger rather than letting him go UDFA. Unless you’ve already drafted two DLs. And heck with it, maybe even then.

          • Yeah, he knows that. He’s heard it his entire life. In spite of that, he was a team Captain and Big 12 DL of the year, the first Longhorn to get that distinction since Orakpo. The 80″ wingspan doesn’t hurt either.

His true value shows on his tape. And despite the Combine snub, his Pro Day stats would have put him among the top DL prospects in the Combine. He is a football player.

          • You can’t coach a mindset. That’s a rule.

“While Ford flashed the ability to stack blocks and play with some strength at the point of attack, his lack of overall mass could make it tough for teams to see him in anything other than a penetrating, 4-3 scheme. Ford has a shot at making a team, but his lack of physical traits will be a challenge.”

“If he doesn’t win with power as rusher, he won’t win”

They rate him as rd 7/PFA (which I assume means preferred free agent.

I like watching UT football, but I don’t bleed burnt orange. Poona is a football player. Plain and simple.

    • I’d have liked Edmunds in the Brown role. I think a guy like Josey Jewell is the right kind of guy to pair with Edmunds or Brown. If Landry or Edmunds can play Preston Smith’s OLB role, then I like that a lot better.

      • Tremaine is gonna be a badass inside backer, you can move him up sometimes, whatever. Edmunds covers light years better than Brown, not sure where you’re getting your data.

        • And kindly take the PSmith trade talk over to TI with your codefendant. You don’t waste a talent like Tremaine Edmunds in a “olb/de” role.

          • PS trade talk? they lost 2 OLBs in FA; don’t nec have to trade PS

but their OLBs are pretty slow, right now

          • I remember your brainstorm from the other day regarding Landry and PSmith, I’m on to you, buster. 🙂

          • I did not start the brainstorm with the idea to trade PS, I merely inserted the scene where it could work out for the best, by drafting a faster/quicker OLB; and even then didn’t have to nec trade PS

          • Watching you, buster….

          • And fwiw, our OLBs have been slow. He’s more than just that.

    • I don’t like waiting until rd 4 to draft RB. We can do better.

  • Funny interaction this morning with the CFO of our company, we were chatting about the ball game, he was saying how he’s got season tix to the Nats, & I mention my tickets to the AFL. He then said that some woman in his church was a football player, as asked if it was for the DC divas, he said no, started mentioning teams, and I was like “ah she’s in the Lingerie Football League”, he was shocked, and didn’t belive me, but we googled, yep she played for the Pittsburgh Rebellion.

    • Mark Rypien’s hot daughter….mmmmmmm

    • Using gov’t computers to google Lingerie Football League players isn’t going to end well.

      • This was in the company HQ, so not government computers. And he figured it out via the persons facebook

        • Ah, good. I had an airman who worked for me once who was googling porn sites at his work computer, but he wasn’t opening the sites, but just looking at the tiny icons next to the links. He thought that was okay because he didn’t open anything. The IT guys caught his search, of course, and we had to discipline him. In the end, that actually turned him around and he became a sharp, productive, trustworthy airman and got promoted.

      • lol

      • the thing is, government is so very large with so much traffic that the security is going to either rely on a third party web rating service AND it is going to be scanning for threats; and isn’t going to have the bandwidth to nanny every computer UNLESS they want to fire you. but because of the massive traffic and whatnot, they’re also not going to keep the logs very long. But yeah, I’d not do that.

        • That isn’t the case with the DoD networks I’ve been around. They’re pretty good at catching things in house.

          • not sure where we are now, but there was at one point a mandate to reduce the gateways dramatically. you could have an agency then that might reduce to 1 or 2 and say, if you Googled for “Whole Foods” in Dallas, but the gateway was in Florida, you’d get search results for the Whole Foods in Florida (if those exist). Or whatever it was you were looking for, Google thought you were in Florida. And it didn’t matter where in the world you were, if you tunneled in to get on the network, that’s the choke point, and that’s where it made it easy to organize and scan the traffic through that Trusted Internet Connection (TIC). but in that instance, the aforementioned third party service would have blocked all traffic to anything that was recognized as pron, gambling, or mock football draft type of sites. and the logs are only kept for a few weeks, maybe a few months; but now with the cloud, I don’t know. Terabytes of logs still cost money, though, even in the cloud.

  • Yeah, it’s just hard to win in the NFL consistently, say over an 8 year period. Who even does that? Pats, Steelers, Green Bay; and maybe the Panthers? The teams that are able to win consistently over an 8 year period have (1) great QBs and (2) capacity to minimize the damage of big misses/institutional drama. Even if you have 1 and 2, it is still difficult. The Saints don’t win consistently and they have that (Bountygate notwithstanding).

Appreciate the work Steve put into this. I’d be curious to see how the Skins fare against other teams over similar 16 year period.

    • if you look at many of the teams that had at least some sustained success over several seasons in a row and look at their draft, I bet you see something striking.
      1. They have a plan
      2. That plan includes being very good at a couple of things (priority)
      3. It emphasizes being good at those priority things over (an attempt) to be good at everything
      4. Priority is emphasized even when they’re already excellent at that priority
      5. After the draft, developing players; not relying on the magic of talent.

      BPA POP

  • At some point somebody has to hold Bruce accountable for what’s been going on…. ten years of shitty seasons. That’s Dan. He’s gonna have to make the decision to bring in another person to do the job that’s not Bruce Allen if this mediocrity and below continues. That is on the owner at that point.

    • might see a “real GM” come in if they think they find the right guy; but those guys don’t get fired very often

      • Squinnsamania, brother!

And no quality GM is going to come here unless Bruce Allen is gone.

        • Not sure about that. I think it’s less Bruce, specifically, and more that they’d want autonomy with regard to most roster decisions. If Bruce would give that up (fat chance), I could see a GM coming here – Dan would probably pay a GM well.

          • …so it is Bruce?

I’m not sure it’s Bruce, but if you’re using the Scottgate thing as an example, either Scott wasn’t very good at everything other than putting together a draft board, or it could very well be that Bruce isn’t good enough.

if you don’t like Bruce, we could be approaching the season or two where if it doesn’t go well, Bruce and Jay get canned. The Jay + Smith thing, for their sakes, better work out to at least playoff contention the next few years

  • And Snyder is the common denominator behind both of them. I suspect his influence had more to do with decisions like Zorn, Haynesworth, Spurrier, etc. than the “GM’s” in charge at the respective times.

    • Run with it.

    • Certainly, he’s a factor. Absolutely. But it seems pretty pointless to me to write about that.

      • Unfortunately he’s a pretty big factor. As you demonstrated, both Cerrato and Allen have produced nearly identical mediocre results over similar time frames. Is that a function of them both being mediocre to begin with or a result of the environment they work in. Would a better Exec do better. I’ve no idea. I hope Snyder figures it out eventually but I’m really skeptical that he will at this point. 20 years is a significant sample size.

        • I don’t disagree with you. You’re 100% correct. I just don’t see the point in writing about it, that’s all.

    • I think Snyder started stepping back when he hired Shanny, then got a little too “happy” with the Trade, and then returned further into the shadows. He’s never going to go fully away, but I don’t see Snyder as the problem other than who he hires/fires as the PoPFI

  • For at least a year, the biggest page on Facebook purporting to be part of the Black Lives Matter movement was a scam with ties to a middle-aged white man in Australia, a review of the page and associated accounts and websites conducted by CNN shows.

The page, titled simply “Black Lives Matter,” had almost 700,000 followers on Facebook, more than twice as many as the official Black Lives Matter page. It was tied to online fundraisers that brought in at least $100,000 that supposedly went to Black Lives Matter causes in the U.S. At least some of the money, however, was transferred to Australian bank accounts, CNN has learned.

Fundraising campaigns associated with the Facebook page were suspended by PayPal and Patreon after CNN contacted each of the companies for comment. Donorbox and Classy had already removed the campaigns.

BLM should hire the white dude to do their online marketing since he is evidently better at it

    • I hate that I’m an ethical person, it seems so easy to scam people.

    • Well, there’s this self-proclaimed marketing guru in Texas….

    • if 20% or less went to Australia and the rest went to charity, is that really all that out of whack with some charitable organizations? one could argue that 100% of very little is less than 80% of a lot more. Unless that’s not what they were advertising

      • That’s not far of.
I worked from some organizations that it was 10% was overhead. 90% went to the programs/charity. Others are terrible, Susan G Koman being one of those big examples of the worst.

        • i don’t know the details, I was saying IF, and 10% isn’t bad for overhead, but it also isn’t the best

and little known fact: custom-made pink everything was really the thing that pushed the overhead out of control

          • 10% is considered good when you look at most those charity ranking websites.

          • really depends on scope, there are plenty below 10%; but that alone doesn’t value the whole of a charity; that’d be like buying a car just based on fuel mileage

          • I used to deal with this when I got stuck with the Air Force Assistance Fund campaigns. 10% overhead costs is pretty good comparatively speaking. Some of these charities shouldn’t be charities.

    • Is it wrong for a middle-age white man to boost BLM? Unless there is evidence that he was misleading people about what was happening with the money, then what’s the issue?

Jets Signed LB Kevin Minter http://bit.ly/2qg7KCa #Jets

    • Could have added LB depth here. Only 27. SMH….it’s like they aren’t even trying anymore with FA’s. Lots of good players still unsigned.

      • some of these guys are going to go where they have a good shot, at least competing, at starting

if the Skins plan on addressing the front 7 in the draft?

What if they ended up with Landry and Harrison in the draft? And maybe a good mid round slot corner prospect?

Then this is all according to plan. If they have one. And it doesn’t involve taking BPA RB with their first pick.

  • So in terms of the skins upgrades at Redskins park, here’s what I’ve found on the web:

2012 the team added the practice bubble, before that remember they would have to practice in a high school gym or air hanger in bad weather.
2013, they got a bunch of money from the state of VA to upgrade Redskins park fixed up the weight room (this was part of the training camp deal if I remember correctly) but there were bids by DC/MD to move Redskins HQ at the time as well.
2015. they added a sauna, meeting rooms.
    2018, upgrading medical facilities

    • 2019, free wifi

    • again, for the most part, facilities don’t address my issues

part of it though, might be CBA. and I don’t mean that to focus on “hitting”

      • Yes, many of your issues are a problem because of the CBA rules, limits on players talking to coaches, the number of practices (ect) . To any extent, the one way a team can quickly get around those rules is by having things in the facilities to give them an edge.

If you’re thinking, how do we get around the player/coach interaction rules.
One way could be by using more video technology, film rooms to give coaches a way to break down video for players with out being there in person.

        • so you mean… like they have an uberduber staff available, an amazing gym and workout center that’s open, just happens to have staff and tutorials and suggestions on proper body care, training, schedules, diet, supplements, maybe some psychology, workout classes, etc., that’s just not necessarily required… but available, without “coaches” intrusion.

I’m sure that’s a model that every college hasn’t already adopted and perfected.

          • I’m sure that some of this is done by now, I know there was something about how with the new I Pads they use for playbooks, they have coaches notes & some video breakdowns of each play.

          • and a subscription to Beachbody dot com for the video group workout rooms?

          • Well, they are allowed in the weight room right now I believe.

      • The CBA limits practice, not advanced training stuff that you’re talking about, so they could go all-in on the fancy biomechanical stuff if they wanted to, at least during the season and approved offseason times.

        • I think they need to trend better, then maybe move over to “advanced training stuff”

Pressure can work too. You might be highly drafted, or highly recruited, but if you show up out of shape (that is, you didn’t follow the “non-required” winter conditioning program) but some walk-on or UDFA did, you might lose playing time. That is a short term decision that has systematic and longer term implications.

        • I understood why they limited 2 a days in the last CBA, and some of that stuff.

But for the life of me, the strict limits on coaches talking shop with players never made sense.

To me, if a player is on the roster, they should be allowed to ask the coach questions.

  • While I’m at, I’ll go ahead and throw some of the injury blame at Allen.

Tell the HC to run a tough camp already. Also, bring in some better trainers, athletic conditioners and sport medicine staff. Don’t rely on the players to develop their own workout and recovery programs.

    • We also have a bad weight room and facility in Ashburn according to NFL standards. It’s not even as good as some big college programs.

      • true

      • and it is not going to change too much until new stadium deal gets going

      • TBF, the top college programs these days have facilities that are better than even the best in the NFL now.

        • Clemson is literally building a theme park for their football team

          • both true, but the theme park / student center part of it isn’t what we’re talking about

I remember stories in the 90’s about weight machines that Nebraska invented and had custom made; and later, Texas pretty much said, they supersized whatever anyone else had innovated lately. And then… Oregon, but that’s all Nike money.

      • There was a story not long ago about them making major upgrades to the medical facility (which is good news)
They upgraded the weight room a few years ago. I want to say 5 years back? But that got them from something like 32nd to middle of the pack.

      • the issue is mostly staff and philosophy

    • in some sense, yeah

I mean, injuries happen, but if you are always on the wrong end of luck “chance” you have to start to examine the problem. who’s best at it? and what do they do?

So, you send in some spies to UCLA and watch how they do.

    • Squinnsamania, brother!

Coughlin did that, and look how much better the team got.

    • I think every player should go through a complete biomechanical assessment from a trained professional. Slight deviations in foot structure and function, for example can overload stress on the Achilles tendon, knees, hip and back joints.

If you can identify any issues up front, it will result in reduced probabilities of injuries through wear and tear, but will also enable some athletes to run faster.

If that actually happened, then IMO, Pierre Garcon’s plantar plate tear would have been entirely avoidable.

      • and you’ve just got plans that work coordinating muscles equally, you’re just getting started

if you don’t have that, then you’re doomed. but I think prob most of the rank and file trainers you can hire at the gym have that part of it “down”, so you’d think that’d be baseline for the NFL.

  • Seems like Dan needs somebody bigger than a true GM type to run things. He had Vinny, then Marty must have really rubbed him the wrong way. Then he got Vinny back and when that shit show ended he went with Bruce based of his family connection to the team. I think the best thing to do would be get somebody who is not connected to past glory at all. Completely fresh and new with no connections other than to another successful NFL franchise.

  • Even though Scot wasn’t the right choice at GM, I do think that what they did there was the right overall structure for the team. Too soon to say if Doug can do it.

  • I don’t put any stock into Allen and the business side of the organization. The team was already profitable and extremely highly valued before he came along and will continue to be so for decades to come.

And though business is business…the point of a professional sports organization is to win games dammit. Bruce doesn’t bring that. Long story short…

We need a legit GM/president of football operations. Bruce ain’t it.

  • I think Jay and Bruce and Doug will be here for a while in the same capacity as they are now. This is going to go another 3-5 years I feel.

  • Until Dan actually gets a real, bonafide GM, like a guy that the Giants just hired, or just a guy that’s done it before for another franchise and let’s that guy run the show 100% completely without interruption, we will never string together perennial winning seasons. That’s a fact. If Bruce is even involved with the team in any way it won’t work.

    • We technically did 3 seasons ago then 2 seasons ago.

But I know what you mean.

    • That’s the way I feel. Whether its true or not its how I feel.

    • No NFL front office has that much separation. The team president is at a minimum involved in things like a decision to sign an expensive QB, the 1st round draft pick, etc.

As long as Bruce is the team president, he’s going to have a voice to one extent or the other even if they do hire a GM.

  • This mock draft was a bit odd, but I kinda dig what I ended up with.

    very much appreciate the article.

you siad, “Also, Cerrato had Joe Gibbs picking players for 4 years, and Allen had Mike Shanahan doing the same, ”
    ———————

how do you know this? i mean the players picked during the gibbs 2.0 were era picks by gibbs? were the shanny picks really shanny, or were they allen picks or snyder picks?

    • I don’t have any objective data in that regard, but my impression of both, particularly Shanahan, was that they had a massive role, perhaps the biggest voice. But to me, it doesn’t matter; Cerrato and Bruce were both in charge.
