What do the Redskins Have in Trey Quinn?

May 22, 2018

by Steve Thomas

Former SMU receiver and Mr. Irrelevant himself Trey Quinn seems to have captured the hearts of Redskins fans everywhere, having done and said all the right things to make everyone believe that he’s going to defy the long odds of NFL success and negative history of Mr. Irrelevants in the league.  Many seem to hope against hope that Quinn becomes a mainstay of Redskin greatness going forward.  Of course, we’ve seen this kind of love before for countless other offseason and training camp heroes, all of whom having come and gone mostly without a peep or making a dent in the never-ending onslaught of mediocrity and negativity upon which this franchise has thrived for a generation.  What, if anything, makes Trey Quinn different?  Why should we have faith in this latest version of the savior reincarnate?

As it turns out, plenty.  I’m not going to pretend that he’s a perfect prospect or that the Redskins have found the next Art Monk, but Quinn has both talent and the potential to make an impact quickly.  Let’s talk about him.

Background

Quinn, who is 6’0”, 208 pounds, and born and raised in Louisiana, was an elite all-around athlete in high school, playing football, baseball, and running track.  He finished his prep football career with 70 touchdowns and 6,566 receiving yards, which was the national prep career yardage record as of 2017[1].  He achieved a level of notoriety in Little League baseball when he threw a no-hitter in the opening round of the 2008 Little League World Series.  Quinn committed to play football at LSU and spent the first two years of his collegiate career with the Tigers.  However, things didn’t go as planned, and he had little production in Baton Rouge, playing in only 14 games, starting 7, and producing only 22 receptions for 276 yards with no touchdowns in the 2014 and 2015 seasons.  He then decided to transfer to SMU, sitting out the 2016 season pursuant to NCAA rules.

Quinn blew up in his one year at SMU and ended up as the NCAA’s leading receiver in 2017 as measured by total receptions.  On the year, he had 114 receptions for 1,236 yards and 13 touchdowns in 13 games.  His 1,236 yards was 11th most in the NCAA, and his 13 touchdowns was tied for 5th-most receiving touchdowns.  Quinn had six games of over 100 yards receiving last season, including 186 yards against the University of Cincinnati, 156 yards against the University of Houston, 139 yards against Tulane, 116 yards against TCU, 116 yards against Connecticut, and 101 yards against Tulsa.  It’s noteworthy, of course, that none of these big games came against elite Power 5 conference teams.  The toughest game SMU played last year was against undefeated, self-anointed national champion University of Central Florida, and in that game, Quinn had 11 receptions but just 47 yards and no touchdowns.

The other thing that’s important to note about Quinn’s time at SMU is that he played opposite Courtland Sutton, who was drafted in the second round this year by the Denver Broncos.  Sutton is a different type of receiver than Quinn – he’s a 6’3”, 218 pound possession receiver who has the body type for the “X” position in the NFL – but they complemented each other well, and most certainly drew opposing coverages away from each other.

At the NFL Scouting Combine, Quinn ran the 40 yard dash in 4.55 seconds, did 17 reps of the 225 pound bench press, jumped 9’8” in standing broad jump, posted a 33.5 inch vertical leap, and ran the 20 yard shuttle in 4.19 seconds.  His hands were measured at 10 1/8 inches, which is impressive size for a 6’0” receiver.  All of his other numbers, though, are fairly mediocre, not terrible but also not overly impressive.

What does his college film show?

Since Quinn played for SMU in 2017, there isn’t a whole lot of film on him available other than some YouTube highlights, so I don’t intend this profile to be a complete picture of Quinn’s strengths and weaknesses.  However, these highlights do show some trends which will be relevant to his NFL potential.

First, he played primarily out of the slot at SMU, but did sometimes split wide.  Redskins head coach Jay Gruden values versatility and has no doubt made note of the fact that Quinn at least has some experience playing outside.  But make no mistake: at 6’0”, 208 pounds, Quinn’s principle NFL destiny is at slot receiver.

Quinn appears to have quality hands.  Not one of his highlights showed him letting the ball get into his body – he catches the ball with his hands, which is an important trait for a receiver and is the #1 thing all coaches teach receivers at every level.  That shouldn’t change in the NFL, so expect Quinn to have a high catch percentage, particularly with a hyper-accurate west coast-style quarterback like Alex Smith throwing to him.

Quinn already has quality route-running skills.  He was outstanding in college at setting up defensive backs.  He uses a variety of techniques to create good separation despite a lack of top-end speed.  Quinn will frequently use stutter steps and head fakes to fool corners.  He varies his speed to his advantage, often appearing to loaf off the line of scrimmage, then bursting past the defensive back at precisely the right time.  He combines all of these techniques, giving the defensive back a stutter step and head shake to get him to change his defensive stance just enough to be able to turn on his speed and separate at the proper moment to get open.  He appears to have an intangible knack for getting open and finding holes in zone coverage.  Quinn has a good sense of where he needs to be on the field in order for the quarterback to find him.  At SMU, he frequently ran dig routes successfully by using his skills to create just enough of an opening for the quarterback to get him the ball.   He also was able to get catches on corner-post routes and 9 routes alone the side and up the seam of the zone the same way.  He even caught the occasional end zone fade touchdown.  Quinn showed competency on the entire route tree at SMU.  His skills seem to be fairly advanced for such a young receiver and should serve him will in the NFL.

The negatives on this player are that, first and foremost, he does not have elite athleticism, top-end speed, or burst by NFL standards.  This is not a player who, despite his collegiate experiences, can set an NFL defensive back up in the same manner as does Desean Jackson by turning on the jets at the exact right moment and running past a helpless corner via his incredible speed alone.  While his techniques are advanced, he also doesn’t have enough of a vertical leap to do significant damage in the NFL on the infamous “50/50” ball or in Gruden’s favorite end zone fade balls, so don’t expect an abundance of those coming his way in Washington.  Even though he did 17 reps on the bench press at the Combine, which is fairly good for a receiver, his size and strength do not lend themselves to the classic “X” position in the NFL.  More importantly, he was a one year wonder, and in that one year, the level of competition he faced in college during his time at SMU in the American Athletic Conference was sub-optimal, so it’s not certain that he will be able to immediately achieve the same level of success early on in his NFL career.

What can we expect from him on the Redskins?

We’ve made a joke of this on the show, but this player really does remind me of Ryan Grant, only with a bit more speed.  Given his size and so-so athleticism by NFL standards, I don’t think we can expect Quinn to see much time as an outside receiver.  His destiny with the Redskins is in the slot.  Quinn’s highly developed route running skills and good hands should allow him to find success in the short-passing, timing West Coast offense run by Gruden.  This is exactly the type of player Gruden loves.

The Redskins have three locks at receiver, Josh Docston as the starting “X” receiver, Paul Richardson, Jr. as the “Z” or flanker, and Jamison Crowder in the slot.  Behind those three, the Redskins will most likely keep 2 more on the active 53 man roster, so Quinn will have to compete with Maurice Harris, Brian Quick and Robert Davis, as well as a host of undrafted free agents such as Simmie Cobbs Jr., Shay Fields, Darvin Kidsy, De’Mornay Pierson-El, and Cam Sims.  Certainly Harris has the inside track on one of two remaining spots, and Quick as a veteran most likely will be initially penciled in for the other spot at the start of training camp.  Robert Davis is the opposite of Quinn – Davis is raw in terms of NFL receiver skills, but has natural gifts that Quinn doesn’t have: size, elite speed, and athleticism.  At 6’4”, 209 pounds, and decent speed, Quick, a six year veteran, has plenty of experience but is probably better suited for an outside role if he makes the team.   Quinn’s advantage might be that, of these players and disregarding the undrafted free agents, he is the only one who is perfectly suited to back up Crowder in the slot and who could play a role in slot on the opposite side of the field in 4 receiver formations.

From a long-term perspective, Crowder’s contract expires at the end of the 2018 season and will be due for a large raise.  Jarvis Landry, who set the bar as the league’s preeminent slot receiver, just got a 5 year, $75M contract from the Cleveland Browns, and while Crowder isn’t at that level (Landry had 288 catches after his third year to Crowder’s 192) he nonetheless will be due a large payday.  Quinn therefore has an opportunity, as unlikely as it may be, to prove to Washington’s front office that they can save money by letting Crowder walk and having Quinn step into the starting slot receiver role.  I’m not saying that’s wise or likely; merely that he has that opportunity here.

Overall, if the talent he displayed at SMU can effectively translate to the NFL, Quinn might just be able to beat the “Mr. Irrelevant” odds and carve out a long-term role for himself.

A 16-year-old has been arrested and charged as an adult in the death of a police officer on Monday, and three other suspects — all teenage males — are in custody.

Dawnta Anthony Harris, of the 1600 block of Vincent Court in the Gilmor Homes complex in West Baltimore, was charged with first-degree murder in the killing of Officer Amy Caprio, according to court records. He is being held without bail at an adult detention center.

So, the Santa Fe shooter and this scumbag will both live, unfortunately.

Gerald McCoy had Vita Vea introduce himself as Maui from Moana to McCoy’s kids as part of his rookie hazing

    • That’s rookie hazing now?
Shoot, when I was in high school theater, we hazed the freshmen by duct taping them upside down to the wall for a few hours.

      • I think the football team should’ve hazed the theater seniors.

        • Our theater people were tougher than our football team, the W&L football team wasn’t very good.

      • Another great prank some of the girls played on us guys, they took one of the set props, a trunk, and filled the top with photo’s of gay porn with the male casts heads cut out and pasted over the porn actors heads. When we opened it in a scene on stage, everyone started laughing.

      • Squinnsamania, brother!

Wow, that’s pretty hard core. We just gave a choice: a super wedgie in which your underwear was sure to be ripped from you in a very uncomfortable way or you clean the senior lounge.

        • That was probably the most hard core one, the guy who came up with it really had a problem with the freshman who came in super cocky that year. I was just locked in a closet.

      • Is this real life?

        High school theater hazing??

        • High school theater, all the hazing of football. But with a lot more girls around.

          • Right………

          • Freshmen got hazed. Then there would be a little battle of the sexes prank thing that would go back and forth in the show. Almost always involved things like a blow up doll. How did a bunch of teens get access to sex toys?

          • In my time as local crew for our local concert venue/theater in college, I still remember working a show for a ballet company that came through. The guys all seemed to be gay, but the women were some of the most overtly sexual people I’ve ever been around (which admittedly isn’t saying much).

          • In my limited amount of time working in professional theater, it seemed rare to have a show go on where some cast and crew didn’t hook up.

          • a gay dude ballerina ? Never happens.

        • Greg doesn’t strike me as a person who would react well as the person being hazed…

          • Not in the least

          • Some people do, some people don’t. Part of hazing is to get a sense for who’s got that ego problem.

          • He understands that the new guys have gotta get broken in.

What is amazing is that Celtics and Lakers account for almost 50% of all NBA Championships

    • Back in the day, smaller league, fewer teams, regional drafting, easier to win alot, I think. The more impressive streaks for both teams were the 80s and in the case of the Lakers, the late 90s through 2010. Much harder to build a dynasty in the modern era.

      • Squinnsamania, brother!

Be careful, Steve’s a big fan of that shitty, sad excuse for an NBA team located in LA.

      • Lonzo had a decent year. Lived up to the hype in terms of his court vision and passing ability.

His only real flaw is his shooting percentage. I’m willing to give him another year at that, because he had streaks of good shooting this year.

        • Right. Anyone can get better at shooting, but there is some level of you either have it or you don’t when it comes to how good! I don’t think he’ll ever be a good enough shooter to make up for his serious lack of athleticism! His lack of Athleticism is all I needed to see to know he wouldn’t be a top player in this league.

          • I hear you, but with his passing ability, he doesn’t necessarily need to be an elite by NBA standards athlete. He was more than capable of running the break, and he was an outstanding defender for a rookie last year.

yeah I purposely watched this game because at the time the Chiefs were probably the best team in football. And the defense domindated them for almost 3 quarters then Allen and co. went down. The rash of injuries were crazy.

I had never heard of the term fridging as it applies to graphic novels and films

where the male hero’s story is propelled forward by violence directed at a significant woman in his life

which the term comes from the 1994 Green Lantern issue “Forced Entry,” when Kyle Rayner’s girlfriend Alex DeWitt was horrifically murdered and stuffed into a refrigerator for him to find.

evidently “fridging” is a very sexist thing and is bad

The unthinkable has happened – Dr Pepper is putting Larry Culpepper on waivers.

Adam Carricker, who writes the Carricker Chronicles for “Big Red Today” which is part of the Omaha World-Herald’s Nebraska Cornhuskers’ coverage, tweeted Monday the soft drink company had decided to design a fresh ad campaign for its College Football Playoff sponsorship.

It means the four-year run of actor Jim Connor’s character of Larry Culpepper, a stadium concession worker who claimed he created the CFP, is over.

  • The Patriots passing game…
They always have one or two guys running sideline to sideline within the first 5-10yds of the line of scrimmage. If you play man, Brady waits for his receiver to eventually out run you, plus he can lead you open too. If you play zone, Brady waits until his receiver is about to hit a gap and leads them there. Then when you guard against that ticky tacka short passing game, he’ll take a few shots downfield.
This is precisely how they beat Atlanta in the Superbowl, just literally gassing out the CBs because Atlanta played a lotta man defense.

    • Yep, that’s it in a nutshell

not sure how reproducible that is. i mean… it’s brady, who i will grudgingly call the goat.

      • I think it is probably a lot less Brady than people think

and Vicc, how does getting their CBs gassed not allow the ATL to get 1 first down (twice) to get into FG range to ice the game?

        • It’s part Brady, part Belichick.

Neither would be as successful as they have been without the other.

        • No doubt, Atlanta should’ve won that game! They were already in FG range…if they just hand the ball off 3 straight times, Atlanta wins!!!

    • It sounds like, essentially, a version of the west coast offense, only run by a QB who’s undeniably one of the very best ever by any measure.

NFL.com has our biggest question mark as who plays LG

Washington Redskins: How does the offensive line look?

The Redskins acquired a very mobile quarterback in Alex Smith, who has 2,433 career yards rushing and 14 touchdowns on 529 attempts. While the Redskins likely didn’t trade for Smith with a view on his running skills, the 13-year veteran may have to use all the tricks in his bag to stay upright if the Redskins don’t gain stability along the offensive line, especially at left guard. Arie Kouandjio is scheduled to undergo surgery to repair a partially torn quad, and the timetable for his return remains unclear. Washington recently re-signed Shawn Lauvao, and Tyler Catalina and Kyle Kalis are on the roster. With Kouandjio on the mend, the competition among the trio could go well into training camp before the Redskins settle on a starter.

Best thing I remember about Erol from Erol’s (he was a hard working immigrant to the US)

I bought my first VHS machine from him way back in the day, we debated BetaMax vs VHS

I bought the machine and the Godfather I & II boxed set, I think I dropped $1350 that day, my Dad thought I was crazy, until he sat in my room watching the movies with me.

I did tell Erol he should rent out the damn VHS tapes cause the were so expensive.

Like $60-80 to buy a movie then I think the Godfather set was like $175

    • noonefromtampa

now you can get 3 Clint Eastwood movies on BluRay for $7 in the Walmart bargain bin

      • I wonder if, in 10 years, there will be any physical DVDs or music CDs sold at all.

        • noonefromtampa

you probably buy a life time key or rent a temporary key to unlock it on your current device

          • I guess I’m the only person who still buys CDs then converts them to digital tracks at home. I like having the booklets, and I still think CDs sound better than streaming music from most services (probably except for Tidal) on a good home audio system.

          • You can already do that through Amazon

          • I haven’t bought stuff in like 10 years because you can stream it on demand whatever you want for free, the cost being you have to listen to a commercial about every 4th song

2 and a half years since I moved, and still haven’t unpacked the CD boxes.

      • Yes. We bought our first VCR when Back to the Future was released, and it was like $80. And a Canon VHS player, which was expensive, like $850 or something. And it broke in like a year, and when my Dad went back to talk to the guy he said, yeah, they only last like a year. My dad was furious. Luckily by that time, prices had fallen a bit and enough data was in that people knew which were the more reliable VCRs and I think the second one they bought lasted a very long time.

        • noonefromtampa

my first lasted forever was an RCA and was a little pricier than the rest
it was huge and weighed a lot too
the second one I bought 5 years later was like $299 and one third the size and weight

          • I think the reliability problem was the auto-load feature from the front end

my friend’s folks had a top-load that was more like a cassette deck, and it lasted longer

          • noonefromtampa

yes RCA was top load and a reason I went it

            less problems than front loaders

  • So there’s been a lotta agitation in the media towards the notion of offering “thoughts and prayers.”

With more heightened awareness of the effects of bullying, when did having sympathy become so offensive?

    • I really don’t care if the media doesn’t like it. They are mostly dishonest anyway.

    • “when did having sympathy become so offensive?”

About when it became insincere, and not backed with any real action.

  • I did a quick survey of the last 30 Mr. Irrelevants, thanks to the magic of wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Irrelevant

It appears as though only 4 of those 30 were able to carve out a legit NFL career:

    – Ryan Succop, the current Titans kicker (2009, so 9 years and counting).
    – Michael Green, CB, 2000. 9 seasons with Bears, Seahawks, and Redskins (2008; I don’t even remember him).
    – Marty Moore, LB, 1994. 8 years with the Patriots and Browns.
    – Matt Elliott, C, 1992. 4 years, Redskins and Panthers.

That’s the whole list going back to 1989. And Elliot’s Wikipedia bio says that he played longer than any previous Mr. Irrelevant.

So, Quinn has tough odds to beat.

The worse problem we can have with Trey Quinn is that he has a ballin’ time in the preseason games and you can’t risk trying to put him on the practice squad

    • That’d be a problem.

    • Different_Cat

I don’t know, I’d say an even worse problem would be if he just sucks.

      • I don’t think he’s going to suck. I think at worst, he’s a decent backup possession receiver.

      • noonefromtampa

if he sucks, no problem, cut him he’s a 7th round pick

problem is when you have to find a spot on the 53 (unless he plays multiple ST units) and he’s inactive for 16 games (basically just takes up a spot) because you don’t want to lose him and have it bite you in the ass

    LOL

  • Nice work, Steve. The writing is sharp and professional. Also, a lot of very good, relevant info on a 7th rounder.

I disagree that Quinn has “said the right things” but I would say most people find his “confident” talk to be an asset. Personally, I’d like to see him talk with his play on the field.

I think if he’s the hard worker that guys like Thrash and Grant were/are, he’ll be a guy that hangs around and contributes. But I don’t remember Thrash or Grant calling themselves “best in the draft” or any such stuff.

He’ll be an interesting one to follow.

  • Different_Cat

    Good write up, Steve.

As far as metrics goes, it’s worth noting that Quinn has huge hands for a guy his size (10 1/8″). Stubby arms, though.

  • noonefromtampa

Jarvis Landry, who set the bar as the league’s preeminent slot receiver, just got a $5 year, $75M contract from the Cleveland Browns
    ======================================

is it a 15M year contract?

    • Is that guy that good ? he has some big splash plays but i don’t recall him being that consistent .

      • WRs for some reason are highly overpaid…

      • Cleveland’s gotta overpay to get a guy to agree to go there. Landry doesn’t have tons of big plays to his name, but he’s been very consistent catching the ball. Lots of receptions his first few years.

      • Different_Cat

Seems to be a polarizing player. On the one hand he catches a ton of balls (led the league in receptions last year). On the other hand, his yards per catch and after the catch aren’t great.

    • He’s getting more money than Odell Beckham Jr…simply by virtue of being drafted after the 1st round!

    • There’s a typo. I’ll fix it. Landry’s deal is 5 years, $75M.

    • walter_in_fallschurch

    • Moreau sucks – dc

    • Head fakes and stutter steps Steve was referring too

      • ..good change of speed. Bottom line – dude knows how to get open. Let’s see how it plays out.

      • His film that I watched really was impressive in that regard. He’s more advanced than alot of young receivers.

Quinn’s big issue is that he’s not going to be overly explosive by NFL standards, but if he can consistently get open it won’t matter and he can play a role.

    • NEver know how to feel about these matchups. On the one hand your like “dang, Quinn just juked and got open!”. On the other hand your like “dang, Moreau just got juked and left open!”.

No Fuller, No Breeland…some people said Moreau was a candidate to step up and coaches liked him. Hopefully he’ll win more of these matchups than not.
