by Steve Thomas
We’ll have lots of good substantive content this week, but for now we wanted to start off Monday morning with a quick look at the important dates on NFL’s offseason calendar (we cut out quite a bit for the sake of readability). Bookmark this page for future reference:
January 1 | Clubs may begin signing free agent players for the 2018 season. |
January 1 | Clubs may renegotiate or extend the rookie contract of a drafted rookie who was selected in any round of the 2015 NFL Draft. Any permissible renegotiated or extended player contract will not be considered a rookie contract, and will not be subject to the rules that limit rookie contracts. |
January 1 | Option exercise period begins for fifth-year option for first-round selections from the 2015 NFL Draft. To exercise the option, the club must give written notice to the player on or after January 1, but prior to May 3. |
January 15 | Deadline for college players who are underclassmen to apply for special eligibility. A list of players who are accepted into the NFL Draft will be sent to clubs on January 19. |

However, a contract cannot be executed with a new club until 4:00 p.m., New York time, on March 14. |
March 14 | Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must exercise options for 2018 on all players who have option clauses in their 2017 contracts. |
March 14 | Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must submit qualifying offers to their Restricted Free Agents with expiring contracts to retain a Right of First Refusal/Compensation. |

If the player has not signed a player contract with a club by July 23 or the first scheduled day of the first NFL training camp, whichever is later, he may negotiate or sign a player contract from that date until the Tuesday following the 10th weekend of the regular season, at 4:00 p.m., New York time, only with his prior club. |
May 11-14 | Clubs may elect to hold their one three-day post-Draft rookie minicamp from Friday through Sunday or Saturday through Monday. |

Walter….in his heyday…..
i HAVE hit a shot like that. it was not an overhead, but i was at net about to be passed on the forehand side. i threw my racket out and made contact with the ball, which bounced weakly over the net for a well-placed “drop shot”. my opponent did not allow it. i guess it was after the rule change.
connors was my favorite player back in the day. i so hated borg for usurping connors, and loved mcenroe all the more for usurping borg.

“you know how far it is from the drill camp to the place I found Natalie’s body? 6 miles…6 miles. That’s a warrior, that is a warrior. A man like you…….you might make it 600ft.”
“What…what..what do you want me to do?!”
“I want you to run” POOOWAHHHH!

I really liked Wind River. The actor that played Martin, Natalie’s father, was especially noteworthy.
I’ve had to work with jackasses that share the same attitude with those contractors. Justice served.
Okay… new topic. Guilty pleasure TV shows that you would never admit you watch… other than here and now.
I’ll go first… Treehouse Masters. Love that shit. And fuck you for laughing
Treehouse Masters is cool though. No shame there.
Me….
The Vanilla Ice Project
I’ve seen it… but given that I do something similar for a living I don’t have much interest in it.
Stop, collaborate and listen Ice is back with a brand new invention

will it ever stop, yo, I don’t know, turn out the lights and I’ll glow
I can’t believe I know that whole song by heart and I never owned it… that’s how often they played that shit on the radio
Okay… not the whole song but the first few verses
Never heard of it…
Original Mythbusters…and American Pickers. *facepalm*
I have been stuck on American Pickers a time or 2 when scrolling through channels old school style.
Never watched more than a few minutes of Mythbusters
Yeah, I love vintage Americana so that’s an easy one. Have no idea why Mythbusters. None.
Kari Byron. I can watch her all damn day.
Lizard Lick Towing
Never heard of it
couple years back I used to watch it all the time

Good show. Well shot, informative and, oddly soothing.

Watching Thunderball. I have it recorded. SPECTRE just blew the guy up in the chair at their staff meeting. That part always cracks me up.
we watched the remake on prime last week. it was pretty campy
Remake?
Might be talking about 2015’s Spectre. But that was no remake. They did however, kick the dust off of Spectre and Blofeld.
Ahhh… so. I like the opening scene of SPECTRE. When Bond blows up the building then follows the villain through Mexico City to the Town Center where they both get onto a helicopter and decide to have a fight. Classic.
Quantum of Solace was mostly meh. But I like all the other Craig as Bond movies and sure do like where they’ve taken and portrayed the modern Bond to be.
Totally wary of the impending recast too.
I agree… Quantum might be my least favorite film after “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” with that George Lazenby guy.
One and done. He was the Marty Shottenheimer of the Bond ranks.
Whoever follows Craig, is the next Lazenby.
They’ll have to cast someone to keep on schedule with the production. But, it’s just not going to work.
Craig has said he would rather slit his wrists than play Bond again but he has one more contracted movie which I think is scheduled for release around October. Then there is talk of a female playing the lead which would be a weird thing.
^ O please. Really? ‘Bond. Jane Bond.’
Yep… beautiful, sexy, and knocks guys out with one punch… you know… totally real.
I’m not down with a reboot.
If it’s a woman, she shouldn’t be Bond. Make her 008. Or hellz, if it’ll shut up the SJWs, make her 001.
Hadn’t thought of that, but you’re probably right that she would have to be 001.
Love Craig as Bond. Casino Royale and Sky Fall are fantastic. Agree, Quantum is meh.
Aye. Good movies.
There was this one time in band camp…….
Thunderball….starting Lance Armstrong.
LaFleur was hired in 2008 by the Houston Texans to serve as an offensive assistant. He assisted both wide receivers and quarterbacks during his two-year stint there and developed a close relationship with coordinator Kyle Shanahan.
When Shanahan’s father Mike was hired by the Redskins, Kyle brought LaFleur to Washington to coach the quarterbacks. A primary responsibility of LaFleur’s for the 2012 season was to mentor rookie quarterbacks Robert Griffin III and Kirk Cousins, whom LaFleur was particularly fond of.
So Shanny
Yep
…but then Gruden 😉
Actually no, he went to the Falcons with Kyle, then went to the Rams with McVay
Ahhhh

Interesting…
Is he part of the Gruden tree?
Or the Shanny Tree?
https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/953066849440321536
By the way… yes I’m always wary of spread offense QB’s
The bottom line is with Cousins gone we won’t have QB that throws bad interceptions and loses games for us anymore.
Always a chance…
Be honest, without Cousins how many games are we even in, much less win this year?
I like Cousins. I would like him here. I just don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on him… which we would basically have to do. Front office fucked this thing up from the get go.
I agree and it’s a damn shame.
Yup.
Exactly where I am
Amen

I’ve been in that town… it’s a shithole
Chained to their beds. God damn.
Having a good QB on a rookie deal would be the ideal.
Sure would
We drafted one with the 2nd overall pick once…
And then he lost what enabled him to overcome his many, many flaws.
Yea… you wanna use that as a reason never to draft one again?
He said a GOOD QB Hope
Nobody understands me…
People seem to forget that I don’t blog here…..

Looks like the Giants are bringing in Shurmur for a 2nd interview. Not sure about how he’ll be as a HC, can’t really knock him for Cleveland, but I like his offense
We stayed up late on Saturday nights to catch episodes on Benny Hill. Every now and then one of us had to stand by the TV and hold the antenna to clear up the signal out of Baltimore.
What about the Red Green show?
I’m not familiar with it.
Sounds like his TV is broken.
Par for the course in Baltimore

Check out some of the “ranger gord” skits.
What the fuck is an antenna?
It’s after your time. But sort of like the smoke signals you used back then to send messages. Just, without the smoke.
I figured all you young bucks only knew tv that had a coax sticking out its wazoo.
We may not be as ancient as some of you, but we do remember the time when the TV took a minute to warm up before a picture would show.
Tubes! I’m so old, I remember pretty much every grocery and drug store had a tube tester and tubes.

Just saw a mock with Baker Mayfield going to us at 13…
I’m not so opposed to that
2nd round:
44. Washington: DL Derrick Nnadi, Florida State
Nnadi doddy, we like to party…..
DL not QB
If Kirk is gone from here someone has to play… I’d take Mayfield and not look back.
Anyone know what quality DL will be up in FA?
Greg’s guy, Sheldon Richardson
Benny what’s his face
Benny and the Jets?
Benny to the Jets?
Benny Logan?
Yeah
Pretty sure you weren’t talking about Benny Hill… but you never know
I love Benny Hill. Have his box set.
Benny Hill, in today’s environment…
Is exactly what the world needs.
Damn right.
Demarcus Lawrence but he’s a DE
And a fucking monster, let him walk, Jerruh.
Laughing… yeah, that too.
Poe, Logan, Ansah, Clayborn, Carradine, Richardson, Lotulelei, Okafor
So there’s enough to solve a problem or 2 in FA and not HAVE to take one in the draft.
I would say a good DL is going to be cheaper than a good QB in FA.
But if we have a good defense we don’t need a good QB…
– Not Denver
If we have a good defense AND a good QB we’ll be shittin’ in high cotton
Indeed and I thought we were on our way this year with the defense early on.
Defense needs depth… and a starter or 2. And ET on the sidelines to heal owees
Or Mr Myagi
And Derwin James
Mayfield would be great if KC books.
Neither am I. But only because Greg’s head would pop. Literally. Pop. Bits of brain and bone all over the place.
https://media.giphy.com/media/Am1nhjxVA0fEQ/giphy.gif
“With the 13th pick….the Washington Redskins select….Baker Mayfield.”
Bonus points for finding a bald guy.
Same as if we signed Richardson
Nah, Greg would instantly do an about face and attack anyone who challenged the pick.
Meh…
Trust me on this one. It’s an annual event.
“That’s a good get”

Nobody saw a 45-42 #Jaguars win over the #Steelers. Nobody … except Calais Campbell, who reminded me what he told me after last week’s game. This is so weird @Campbell93
Smartass
For reals. I’m on my third watch trying to decipher what he’s saying.
He said that he didn’t care if they won 2-0 or 45-42…. they’d take it
Then, of course, they won 45-42
Lol

Salary from 2016-2017
Kirk Cousins: $43,896,600
Case Kernum: $5,541,250
Blake Bortles: $5,534,275
Marcus Mariota: $4,171,905
One of these QBs has yet to win a Post Game. Can you guess which one?
One Hint: it sure isn’t the QB who’s making 43 Million….
Is there an echo in here?
Yeah, for the twitterless folks….. problem?
Ah… didn’t know that was a thing here
It might not be, old habits die hard 🙂

The Hawaii public employee who plunged the state into chaos by accidentally sending out an incoming-missile emergency alert Saturday has been reassigned, according to reports.
The unnamed emergency department worker will not be fired because he made an honest mistake, Hawaii Emergency Management Agency spokesman Richard Rapoza told the Washington Post.
“Part of the problem was it was too easy — for anyone — to make such a big mistake,” Rapoza said. “We have to make sure that we’re not looking for retribution, but we should be fixing the problems in the system. … I know that it’s a very, very difficult situation for him.”

Crazy ass weather. Sunny and warm to wintery mix inside of a few hours. Ahwell, there’s steaming cups of coffee for this sort of thing.
Finally finished getting ALL of the lights down. The upper ¾” of ground is thawed out while the rest is still frozen. One could bust their ass, if not careful.
I’ve got one string of lights still up. I twisted it up the banister and liked the ambient light so much that I’m leaving it there until I find a strip of LEDs that I can permanently attach to the railing.
Check out the strip lights on Amazon. I’ve made a few shad lights with them and they work great.
You can get them in 12v DC or 120v AC. RGB, single color, whatever.
I spotted those. Almost made the buy when I saw in the reviews the colors are funky and that they’re not UL listed.
I haven’t had a problem. Just pay attention to the reviews. Several different companies making them.
Yea fuck it. A Chinese, non-union welder is as good as any. Amirite?
^Totally mess’n
One WTF just happened here in one day is enough for me.
Lol, we had some Chinese welders come in during a expansion a few years back (sent with the company that fabricated a lot of the equipment), I felt sorry for them. Nice guys but totally void of Craftsman’s pride. Poor welders with poor equipment. The engineering was shit, the fabrication was shit. We’ve completely redone most of what was originally purchased. Money in my pocket. CEO logic.

Hoo Ha!
Technicians and camera operators
represented by IATSE walked off the job before the Golf
Channel’s coverage Sunday of the Sony Open in Hawaii, prompting a scramble by the
NBC-owned network to preserve the dulcet feel of a golf broadcast.
Elements such as ambient sound from
the course or close-up shots of players went out the window, with overhead
blimp angles getting extra duty. Studio hosts handled the announcing duties
from the network’s Orlando, Fla., headquarters instead of the tournament site
in Hawaii. On-air commentators were pressed into alternate service, with photos
on social media showing Jerry Foltz operating a camera in a tower above the
16th hole.
In a statement provided to the
Associated Press, the Golf Channel said it has been in talks with IATSE
for the past nine months. “Those efforts have not yet yielded a resolution, and
we look forward to reaching a mutually agreeable contract,” the statement said.
“However, some technicians have chosen to walk off the job today. We have
contingency plans in place, and will continue to deliver coverage.”
I can’t think of a less engaging topic
I found it hilarious… all those technicians flown to Hawaii to televise an event and they walk off the set… let’s go to the beach!!!!

Two Clemson defensive linemen who could have been first round picks this year are coming back. That… that doesn’t happen.
If you are a first round lock and you don’t go, you’re a moron.
Yep too much risk of injury to stay.
Not normally.
Wilkins is a guy we might have drafted. Bumps up the value of the remaining DL, which sucks.
Yep.
so I see the man haters club guilted Mark Wahlburg into giving up his $1.5M because the female actor wasn’t dumb enough to include reshoots into her contract and he did not, so he had the producers bent over the proverbial barrel
The female actor was too dumb?
Seems like neither will be hanging out at the MENSA club house.
It seems to me this is what happened:
– re-shoots needed, so producer approaches cast to ask for assistance
– Female lead reads her contract, discovers that she already agreed to do reshoots as a part of her original deal; realizes she has no basis to ask for more money
– Wahlberg reads his contract, sees that he didn’t agree to reshoots, and says, “hell no unless you pay me $1.5M; I’m a major movie star and my time is valuable”.
I utterly don’t see the problem here.
Tax deduction.
Me either you want more work than pay me for it, especially since without me you don’t have the movie.
because you’re man and therefore do not see the injustice being done to women
No because I was smart enough to make sure I signed a better contract than she did.
Sorry, I was looking at the ass picture NPI posted… what did you say?
Agreed, a contract is a contract.
Sucks, don’t it?

The funny thing is that Michelle Williams and Mark Wahlberg share the same agency.

I agree with you about 99% of politicians. I still think there are a few who are in it because they want to make America better. I think Trump honestly cares about making America better, but I think that he has a very limited idea of which Americans deserve to be a part of that vision. I also think that the idea of making America better in a vacuum (as opposed to making the world better and enjoying that rising tide) is a mistake.
——————
I couldn’t disagree more. I think the vast majority of politicians start with the right motives. They have ideologies that they believe will lead to better results, so they push those ideologies. Along the way many of them become too enamored of the power and it becomes more about holding onto it, or accumulating more of it.
Trump is a completely different animal. He has never had an ideology he believed in, and he does not care about making anyone’s life better but his own. The only thing he cares about is public attention. As long as people are talking about he’s happy. If people aren’t talking about him he’s miserable. He was a Democrat when it was convenient. Then he noticed the popularity of guys like Limbaugh, Beck, and Hannity, and moved in that direction because they were getting killer ratings. He has an innate genius for marketing, but in every other respect he is an absolute moron.
Excuse me while I just ignore that diatribe that is total leftist bullshit. With all due respect.
I would expect no less.
“I’m the least racist person I know”
this could translate to I hang out the Hitlers of racism, but I’m only a Hermann Goering level racist, therefore I’m the least racist person I know
It can translate to anything you want it to. People see what they want to see, hear what they want to hear, and believe as they will believe.
I don’t think he’s the type of racist who HATES minorities, but he is the kind who thinks they are inferior.
He doesn’t seem to think about what he says.
“They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”
Some are good people, but that’s just an assumption. I don’t know for sure. But they’re rapists. But that isn’t a racist thing to say.
Exactly. There are many people who are racists in the abstract, but who can be friendly with and even respect individuals who are minorities. The old, “one of my best friends is ______.” “Hey, we have a Jewish lawyer!”
How can you franchise tag a guy(twice) and NOT be a fan of his? I just don’t follow that logic. That’s a significant portion of the cap you could’ve used on a guy you actually “liked”. This my friends is THE definition of insanity. Not buying that reasoning whatsoever.
Good point
I am a fan of Kirk. I am a fan of Kirk until we devote a large portion of our salary cap to him and pay him like the top 3 QB’s in the league who have won playoff games and championships.
So our front office is insane… I’ll buy that…
No it’s simple kirk wants to be a FA no matter what our FO’s has offered he has refused to negotiate.
That is a complete misrepresentation of reality.
Yeah that line of thinking that the Redskins don’t want Kirk is stupid. They franchised him twice you don’t spend that type of money on a guy you don’t want.
No you spend that kind of money because you’re stupid, not because you like a guy. The franchise tag is there for teams to control a player. The players association just ensured it would be expensive to control a players freedom. This wasn’t rewarding Cousins. It was strictly to keep him under the teams control.

He clearly doesn’t give a shit about quite a number of people.
__________________________________
If you pin this ONLY on Trump and not almost every single politician in the world today then you might be blind
Of course there are tons of politicians who don’t give a shit about quite a number of people. Most of them aren’t currently the leader of the free world, though.
They would be if they were smart enough or lucky enough to figure out how to do it.
The problem I have with Trump – other than his overt disdain for Mexicans, Muslims, the Chinese, his lack of respect for women, inability to firmly and swiftly denounce Nazis and the KKK, attempts to rollback progress made by the LGBT community and willingness to get into petty, undignified Twitter squabbles with anyone he doesn’t like, is that he’s doing everything he can to help make big business even more wealthy and powerful than it is.
Trump does not have disdain for Mexicans, Muslims, or the Chinese, and he does not lack respect for women. Those are total distortions that the media pushes. He recognizes real threats to our economy and National Security though and is standing strong against forces hell bent on destroying this country. That strength has been parlayed by the media as hate for groups in order to further their demonization of Trump. Hispanic unemployment under Trump has dropped to its lowest rate in history. He wants everyone to have opportunity, but he wants to stop illegal immigration and people who want to destroy this country from coming here.
I think we just disagree. I’m basing my opinions on what Trump has said, not what people write about what Trump has said.
So Trump said “I have disdain for Mexicans, Muslims, and the Chinese, and I lack
respect for women”. No… he said he wants to eliminate illegal immigration from Mexico and the crime and drugs it brings, stop people from countries with failed Governments from sending people here whose identities cannot be verified, and keep countries from taking advantage of us in unfair trade practices. His daughter is one of his most trusted advisors and had run many of businesses but he doesn’t respect women. Your narrative just doesn’t hold water Kelly.
Kelly, as I have said, my interactions with Trump and experience with his staff is completely counter to all the stuff being thrown out there by the media. He is focused on jobs… not unskilled, minimum wage jobs, and building this economy. He’s been breathing life into our economy since he took office, much to the chagrin of the politician’s who believe all the money in the country belongs to them.
Hope, you are the most-biased poster I have ever seen up here….
…but Kelly isn’t?
Weird…
Kelly is far more open than Hope, IMO.
I would say DC would be Hope’s equivalent on the left.
Okay…
Thank you, Squinns.
You’re pretty far left Kel…
I’m sure you would agree…
I’m very progressive – but I don’t think I’m “lockstep liberal”. I have a lot of respect for John McCain (though I lost some when he cozied up to the Christians during his presidential run). I think that there are a lot of good things about fiscal conservatism. But I also think that trickle-down has been proven time and again not to work, and there are a host of reasons I wish Trump was not representing me or leading my country.
In my opinion, Trump is an embarrassment as a president. Both the Democrats and the Republicans are to blame for having him in office. The reason Trump got elected was because it was obvious that both the Democrats and the Republicans cared more about the well-being of their own parties and their donors than they did about everyday Americans.
Trump convinced enough everyday Americans that he was outside of that particular shitstorm that he could represent them adequately. He was right in that regard – he’s not an insider. Unfortunately, he’s also not qualified to run a nation and is very bad at it. I would be much happier if we had elected an outsider who wasn’t an isolationist and an egomanical bully.
But yeah, I’m pretty far left, it’s true.
Somebody has to set the record straight. I’m not a wall flower and I will tell you the truth. If that makes me “biased” as you say, so be it. You don’t think Trump haters who have never even met him are biased? Misinformed? I do.
I don’t hate Trump. I also don’t think that meeting a person is necessary to form an accurate critical assessment of them.
Without personal engagement you are at the mercy of others opinions to form your own. Haven’t you ever met someone who had a “reputation” that when you engaged them you found them to be totally different?
eh hemm…
(me?)
j/k
ahaha – I knew you’d be cool when I met you 🙂
Watching Trump perform in debates and reading what he posts on Twitter does not put me at the mercy of other peoples opinions.
I’m not sure Twitter is an accurate representation of who someone is…
…but I could be wrong
If they’re his words, then they’re his words.
People are often different behind the veil of social media is all I’m saying. That may make them shallow and passive aggressive, but that doesn’t make it any less true.
I have only run for an elected position once. While in law school I was living in a tiny, cheap studio condo close to campus. Our maintenance guy was a total thief and was working kickback deals with the towing company that had the contract with us. I almost kicked his ass once and he was hoping I would so he could sue me.
So instead I ran for president of the condo association, won in a landslide and my first order of business was to fire his fucking ass (he was a contract employee). So 5 minutes into the job I saved us $40k.
I cared about my people!
“All politics are local.” – Thomas ‘Tip’ O’Neil
I’m as genuinely happy for Case Keenum as I have ever been for some pro football player. That last play – which was as much skill as defensive misfortune – really is a microcosm for his career in that he has fought for everything he’s gotten and taken advantage of every opportunity whether the first play of his career as a starter to the last play of a game facing almost certain elimination.
KC would have thrown a pick 6….
Now you are just being foolish.
– Hope
LOL!
Wouldn’t have affected his stats too greatly, so still would have been third best QB in the league….
Might have even chased him down, a’la the Pro Bowl. 🙂
I’m happy for Keenum as well.
Trump has informed reporters that he is “the least racist person”, so I guess that settles that matter.
Never paid some porn chick hush money either. So what if there’s an NDA. That doesn’t mean anything. *wink-wink*
I have no idea whether there is any validity to this “report”.
The porn chick was pretty funny about it anyway. She said something like, “If it happened, you’d be reading about it in my book.”
My experience with Trump supports a non-racist personality. Trump sees this country as lacking in proper management to build and fuel the economy, and that the economic power the US wields is it’s ultimate strength. All my interactions with him have reinforced this perspective.
I’ve never had interactions with Trump, but I don’t think he understands what racism is.
I think he understands exactly how his detractors see him fairly or not and he just doesn’t give a shit about the ones who won’t ever give him a chance or recognize any of the promises he’s already kept to the folks who voted for him.
He clearly doesn’t give a shit about quite a number of people.
He cares a lot more about people than politicians do. He uses his own money to help others rather than tax payers. Politicians don’t care about you or this country. They care about getting and staying elected.
Trump isn’t the “rich getting richer” guy you think he is at all. He does understand that giving stuff to people doesn’t work. He understands that human beings do best when they have a way to pull themselves out of whatever mess they’re stuck in, and build a life they’re proud of. Handouts for life don’t make people feel good about themselves. Human nature doesn’t work that way. Give people opportunity. Those that want to will take advantage of that opportunity. This is how Trump sees things.
My first legit job was a dishwasher (I don’t count selling golf balls back to rich old fucks a job.) I still remember how frickin’ proud I was when I got that first paycheck at the age of 15… and how pissed I was at what was taken out of it.
Trump just signed off on a massive tax break for the rich at the expense of benefits to the poor.
I disagree with the philosophy that the best thing to do with the poor is leave them to figure it out for themselves and stop helping them pull themselves out of poverty. I think that’s a very convenient attitude for the people who are in charge (and who have the money) to adopt, because it absolves them of any responsibility for creating the wealth imbalance, and places all the blame and accountability on the poor themselves.
But even if the poor are to blame for being poor – how does that justify tax cuts for the rich?
I think our society uses race too much to make its points about anything it doesn’t agree with. For the record, there are only 3 races on earth. Caucasian, Negroid, and Mongoloid. However anything that someone wants to make an issue (like the Redskins name for instance) is labeled racist. Native American is not a race.
I can see times when race is used to make a case about things that aren’t actually racial. However, I think there are also a lot of racial influences that people brush off as “laziness” that are actually racial influences.
You might be shocked to know that one of Trump’s closest friends in private is Oprah.
I’m not terribly shocked by that – Trump likes money and power, and she has a lot of both.

Consistently mediocre is consistently disappointed.
—————————–
For me, disappointment comes when you expect something, and it doesn’t happen. When I was a kid, I spotted a brand new Huffy Pro Thunder III silver & red bike in the shed, partially obscured by a wheelbarrow, about a week before Xmas. I’d been asking for a new bike all year, and had been told repeatedly that we couldn’t afford one.
Christmas morning, I was the first one awake. Came downstairs, and there’s the Huffy, stood up in front of the tree on it’s kickstand, with a big bow on the handlebars. I went up and read the tag… it was for my brother. Fuck my life. I had expected I was getting a bike, cuz my parents knew I wanted one, and it didn’t happen.
That was disappointing.
There are 32 teams in the NFL. 12 of them will make the playoffs. 10 of them will absolutely suck. 10 of them will do okay.
I don’t have any reason to believe the Redskins are a playoff-caliber team. I don’t expect them to make the playoffs. So I’m not disappointed by mediocrity. In fact, I’m actually pretty glad we haven’t been super-shitty in a while.
That’s the reality I live in. You might live in a reality where anything other than a championship is failure, or where all 32 teams fans should expect their team to be in that top third, but I just don’t subscribe to that outlook, it doesn’t make sense to me.
You and I see things very differently my friend…
…and that’s okay
Yup!
My brother and I both got bikes one Christmas, he’s older, mine was a shiny new off brand bmx bike (chrome) and his was a used racing mongoose (black with yellow mags). He was so pissed off because my bike “looked” better. My bike fell apart within 3 years of heavy use, he gave his to a kid in the neighborhood when he was 19 years old, still as fast and functional as that Christmas morning.
I grew up in a family too poor to do much for Christmas. We used to make things for each other as presents.
When I was very young, that’s how it was. Dad made progress in the early 80’s. First bike I ever had was home made from junk bikes, lol.
All my bikes were put together from pieces around the neighborhood until I was old enough to work
Mine too… I was really happy to have it. Didn’t wow anybody, but it was mine and it took me lots of places. Let me start my paper route which allowed me to have my own money.
Mine must have weighed 70lbs, lol.
I had a paper route for about three weeks. There were too many papers to use a bike, I had to walk it. Turns out I am not cut out for bagging papers in the snow at 4am and then hauling them around the neighborhood. I’m okay with that flaw.
Laughing… hauling papers was hard work for a kid, especially the Sunday papers. I had mine for about 5 years. Then I was able to work at a McDonalds… Woo hooo!!! Big time money.
The Sunday papers were the worst! I quit and got a job working at the Falls Church Drug Store.
Mine were hand me downs from other kids in the neighborhood
The kid down the street had a Mongoose – also black with the yellow mag wheels. Amazing bike.
Would you rather be a quarterback away, or have Dan Marino?
I don’t know what it’s like to have Dan Marino – Joe Gibbs
I think what gets under folks’ skin about Cousins is that he doesn’t seem to be a fan of the team that he’s leading. He’s not General Patton leading the troops at the Battle of the Bulge; he’s the mercenary doing the job with great skill, but only to line his pockets. Guys like Jurgensen and Theismann bled burgundy and gold. It’s hard to picture guys like Big Ben and Brady shopping around for the best price. These guys aren’t ninnies with fragile egos, where everyone has to walk around on tenterhooks for fear of offending them.
_____________ insert irrelevant RG3 “like” generator.
I don’t know if peeps have to handle Kirk with velvet gloves as he’s pretty fucking tough, but yeah, I agree with the first half.
Hell, Brady took less money so they could keep building and rebuilding the team
Yea, I think you hit the nail on the head. He says the diplomatic thing but never really acts like he wants to be a Redskin. That’s fine, but it contributes to my willingness to move on from him
I think what gets under Cousins skin is the front office of the team he is leading isn’t a fan of his. That door swings both ways. And the Skins have never, ever been a Cousins fan. There is no reason for him to be crazy in love with this team. It will be an amicable divorce. Don’t worry.
+10 points for ‘tenterhooks’
There are teams in this league that jump right over the consistently mediocre phase…
Yeah.
I think it’s almost harder to go from meh to first than it is to go from worst to first.
We keep going from meh to meh… tired of it. Give me, at the very least, a couple fucking playoff wins.
I’m with you. I’d rather the team suck dog balls for 2-3 years in a full-on rebuild than be stuck in this game of praying for a wild card spot every year, with no real possibility of advancing.

The team is less of a circus/shit-show now than it was under Shanahan or during the Cerrato years. I’m okay with that.
The team has shown they can consistently be a middle-of-the-road team for the first time in ages. I’m okay with that, too.
It will take a few more years of mediocrity before I start feeling like “why aren’t we consistently in the playoff hunt?”. But if we’re still hovering around .500 in 2020, I’ll be pushing for changes.
2020? Hell, let’s just make it an even 2912!
willy , nilly
Nice, you countryfieded it.
I, for one, am NOT okay with being consistently middle of the road.
That’s why, we take steps, even if it’s one at a time…and go through the process of finding the QB and roster that is going to get us over the middle.
I’m okay with it, because it shows: A) progress, and B) consistency, which are two things you want in a franchise that we haven’t had in a long time.
Consistently mediocre is consistently disappointed.
I’m guessing TI will shut down by the end of 2018. It doesn’t add anything to the rest of the Redskins coverage at WaPo anymore, and I expect WaPo will reshuffle their content to figure out a way to be profitable without a paywall.
WaPo seems to be having a tough time retaining Redskins beat writers. Seems like they all put in one season and bolt now
And their coverage wasn’t anything special. Without Mike Jones there’s no reason to read anything they produce about the Skins
With the exception of Bullock, I agree.
Yea, Bullock is good. He might not be retained by WaPo though, right? I thought I had heard that somewhere
^ Alex mentioned he didn’t have a new contract yet, but maybe his piece in the Post today is evidence he does now.
There’s a lot of turnover in the sports media industry lately in general

NE may be the worst of the four, but they come up big when needed. And are still much better than the Redskins D.
I wish we would draft nothing but defense this year. Bruce & Co. would likely hit on some of those picks.
If anything this year has proven you can win big with money spent on defense and not QB.
Cousins wants to be the prom queen and have teams tell him how great he is and how much they want him. He seems to need that validation for some reason. He might sign with the redskins but it will be after he is a FA not before.
I think that’s over. He just wants to win a SB and isn’t sure the current front office and coaching staff will ever assemble a team capable of doing that.
Well any team that will be in the running for him is not even close to winning a SB. He wants the most money he can get.
You don’t know what he wants.
He said wants to be a Redskin. While exploring offers from other teams.
My guess is he wants money and to win championships… I would think that’s what most players want
Denver could be a contender. Their QBs were terrible this year. Possibly Arizona as well.
But if he signs with Cleveland or the Jets, then yeah, it’s all about the $$$.
I’m not convinced the current front office and coaching staff can do that either… I mean, they’ve basically proven they have a hard time breaking .500
Me neither.
TI’s latest article only has 89 comments over the past 3 days. With numbers like that they’re sure to go out of business soon. I think on a good day there are 89 comments in about 30 minutes.
I’m sure that’s fine with them as they never really liked the Redskins anyway.
…and the new blog handler straight up told us “…I am definitely NOT a Redskins fan.”
TI’s business model has nothing to do with number of comments.
What’s TI?
Yeah and 50 of those are Noone.
I’m not sure the number of comments means too much to them. They want clicks. That increases their ad revenue, but most of the time 90% of the comments were just us shootin the shit all day. If it was tons of different users viewing the page and commenting it would be different but I don’t think they cared about us too much since we didn’t really drive revenue
They get more than enough clicks from their fucked up politics sections
Indeed
I love how you can feel the dirt between your toes on this blog, thanks Hogsty.
Plain and simple… this organization, since Dan Snyder took over, has been completely unable to correctly address the QB situation. Failure in evaluation, coaching, etc. The RGIII and Kirk debacles are further proof. If the thought of trying it all over again doesn’t cause you concern then you haven;t been paying attention. This shit is a mess… and not likely to be solved simply or soon.
Which is a shame, because he trashed a franchise QB that was on the roster in his early beginnings in Brad Johnson.
Have you been reading my posts? I mentioned this same thing about an hour ago
Oh…..I’ve been off and on today and haven’t really been able to go back and catch up.
Well said.

What coach is out there that could come in and run this offense to give Jay a break? Maybe with some fresh ideas to inject into this offense.

I remain convinced that I personally could’ve gotten the Cousins deal done in a couple hours, tops, last offseason if Snyder had given me authority to negotiate.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
No you couldn’t because he never had any intention of negotiating he wants to be a FA.
IF they had come up big in 2015 I think he would have signed. But I don’t think that would have been smart, without the benefit of hindsight.
They didn’t even have to come up big… just medium. But the rumor is they low balled him. Typically when you blatantly low ball someone negotiations are through
Kinda basic
…also, it’s the job of guys like Scot and Bruce and co to predict what a person is capable of in the future and what the coaching staff is capable of getting out of a player. The Redskins simply failed to do that.
What coach is out there that could come in and run this offense to give Jay a break? Maybe with some fresh ideas to inject into this offense.
Better be a run first guy…
…anyone playing bingo these days?
Jay would have to want that and I doubt he does.
Wes Phillips internal promotion. But it would be hard to promote him above Callahan and Cavanaugh (who is technically the OC).
I thought Callahan said he was happy just coaching the line?
Did he? Hadn’t heard that.
Yes, I think I heard him say that
We just need to get rid of Cousins. Then the offense will roll.

Ha
I see things are back to normal . Honeymoon is over .
#MeToo #Resist
Damn right things are normal, fuck WaPo.
I’ve played nice with everyone… but I’ll be damned if I’m going to sit back and let some passive aggressive little puss bag insinuate that I’m a bitch because I hate the last 20 years of QB madness. Fuck him… and now I’m done.
Laughing… stop sugar coating it SCamp!
Set the injury epidemic aside, something’s the problem.
Kirk has good numbers, sure
Jay’s offense is a passing offense, sure
It’s just what the market demands, sure
# of playoff appearances, 1
# of playoff wins, zero
Defense is getting better, yes
Can we afford to build the defense and pay Kirk, not likely
I’m of the mind that Kirk is just tot toxic here at this point… and it’s not even all his fault.
Build the defense and a run game… then go after a QB. Just don’t like that QB carousel… and Jay ain’t the guy to build a run game…especially for the NFC East. So now coaching carousel, too? Probably…
I’d love to have both…… I’d also love to have time to work, hunt, fish and create……
Work? Fuck work
I’ll get there someday.
Replace “work” with “provide”
k0n… you’re playing a losing hand here and pushing faulty logic as fact. Might want to quit while you’re behind.
My hand is loaded. And, please…you and logic, have no relationship.
God damn dude. You argue and debate everybody on this. Everybody
No, just people like you who want to live in an alternate universe. I’ll make it simple for you. Name the offensive player on this team that played every game and made a greater contribution than Cousins.
You could say the same thing for 90% of the starting QBs in the league. Logic.
Hmmm… maybe, but I think (for instance) Zeke Elliott is FAR more of an impact to the Dallas offense than Dak. I’d say there are other examples in the league but there is NO other player on the Redskins offense more productive than Kirk Cousins.
Other than the center the QB is the only player who touches the ball every offensive snap. And of course Zeke missed more than 1/3 of the season, so I wouldn’t say he was more impactful than Dak.
True… and we had what, 4 guys play center this year? And yes this year Zeke sat out 6 games but he’s still the biggest part of that offense. Not Dak. Your points are correct though.
They lost a bunch wothout Zeke… so yea, his impact is significant
I know, I know, but….
I really wonder what would have happened if Jay had started RG instead of Cousins in 2015. Would Cousins have signed a cheap extension at the high end of the backup QB scale? Or would he have played out the year and become a FA? At the time there certainly wasn’t much of a market for him. If he didn’t play ball the Skins might have dropped him to 3rd string, which would have upped the pressure.
I’m ready to see him and his slow starting, zero playoff wins go somewhere else and be that team’s annual pain in the ass that craps the bed in big games.
We get that…
Damn right
Doesn’t make you right… just insistent… and annoying.
Damn right
Sure beats being a groupie
You’re a “I want Cousins gone” groupie… I’m a Cousins has a right to do and go wherever he wants groupie.
I sure wish he’d exercise that right to pack his useless stats and head on out.
Don’t worry BA will make sure of it. You’re getting your wish!
Good. Enough already with this millstone hanging around the team’s neck. Time we sign a QB that is committed to the organization.
Like Gruden himself said, this one year contract garbage is no way to build a team around the QB position.
I’m much more adverse to the QB carousel we’ve spun on for the last 2 decades…
Didn’t we see this before with Brad Johnson?
Like any other position, you keep bringing them in until you find one.
Look at what the eagles did between McNabb and Wentz.
I’ve said it before, let’s not be a bitch to the fear of the unknown.
So now I’m a bitch… you sure are pissing on a lot of legs this morning.
I didn’t call anyone a bitch. And I’m not pissing on anyone’s legs.
But look, if you want to own being a bitch, I’m not gonna get in the way.
You can read what you wrote… own your words pussy
“I’ve said it before, let’s not be a bitch to the fear of the unknown.”
Okay flunder. Show me in there where I called you a bitch.
Well, considering I just said “I’m adverse to the QB carousel” which in turned prompted your response… I’m not sure how you could take it any other way. So either you’re a passive aggressive little pussy or you own your punk ass words.
I think really, you’re just a bitch. I wasn’t thinking that 10 minutes ago. But wow. Look at you go.
So anyone who doesn’t agree with you is a bitch?
Nope. Just SCamp. And possibly anyone else who comes along and twists the shit out of anything I’ve posted.
Just as I thought you’re a punk ass, passive aggressive little pussy. Can’t own your words until someone holds your feet to the flame. You can go fuck yourself…
Eat a dick dude. My words are clear. ‘Let’s not be a bitch’ does read, nor infer or imply ‘Hey SCamp…you’re a bitch’
Take it up with yourself for having somehow interpreted it that way.
I read what you wrote… that’s all I need to know about you.
Cool
Couple down the street seriously overpaid for a home. Other home owners saw that sale price and put their homes on the market. But, there were no takers at their list price and the offers they received reflected the greater market, not the home that sold for way too much.
That’s how organizations need to approach any agent that brings up the Osweiller deal. Just for sake the Texans overpaid, doesn’t mean every other team ought to follow suite.
And look now, with the salary of the QBs going into this weekend’s game. There’s just no even approaching $20 million for Cousins. Hellz. Dude’s not even worth $10 million. Yea. He’s got stats. But he’s also got a helluva of a knack of folding in must win games. I’m not sorry, but that aspect of his career dramatically reduces his offer.
Speaking of Osweiller. He’s another one that has something Kirk doesn’t. A win in the playoffs.
So instead they paid almost $20M for one year for Cousins, then another $24M for him a year later… and now what? Your logic doesn’t wash here.
The tag rules increased his contract. Not his on the field performance.
He’s been paid so much upfront already, dudes owes the organization a year or two on the cheap.
He doesn’t owe the organization anything. NFL teams use players and discard them all the time. Cousins has been smart and played the hand dealt to him expertly. Other than Revis no other player has gotten the best of a team in league history.
I remain convinced that I personally could’ve gotten the Cousins deal done in a couple hours, tops, last offseason in a way that could’ve made everyone happy if Snyder had given me authority to negotiate. Which he obviously wouldn’t do.
Keep in mind that the front office’s plan if they couldn’t sign Cousins last year (refused tag) they intended to bring in Mike Glennon. Mike Glennon. That’s our front office in action.
How do we know this?
I was listening to the radio a couple days ago and it was being discussed by Riggo, and some other folks.
So we are believing rumors as facts?
I am amused that you think this 😛 I like you and respect you, but please tell me you’re joking!
Awwww.. the lead singer of the Cranberries died 🙁 She was only 46.
Zombie
What are ya’ll missing? Kirk ALWAYS wanted free agency. Kirk wasn’t going to sign ANY deal UNLESS YOU OVERPAID HIM! What “leverage” did the Redskins give up? You can’t make a man sign a deal if he doesn’t want to.
I think where they messed up is not trading him last season.
it was never about the money. He was ‘disrespected’ by being drafted behind RG. Period. end of discussion.
-Uncle Hope Cousins
Here we go, when all else fails, insult the messenger. Kirk never wanted to be here. He was drafted here behind Griffin. He did everything right and finally shone through the cloud of Griffin adoration to get the starting job. he’s worked hard, continued to get better at his craft, been a total professional and overall great person, but you project some sort of snarky insult on me?
…
A lot of valuable players want FA… simple as that
I completely, totally, 100% disagree with this.
What are you missing? He played 4 years on a rookie deal, was offered less than Brck Osweiller was given by the Texans, which made no sense, played on the tag, then offered another deal that was really not sensible if you did the math, played on the tag, and now we’re here. But Kirk’s the bad guy here.
That Osweiller deal was grossly overpaid. That nonsense is on the Texans to afford. Just because they went and got stupid does not mean other organizations should or must follow suit.
Osweiller isn’t worth that contract he signed. And Kirk isn’t worth what he and his agent are pursuing.
It was still the market and offering Cousins a deal below a guy like that was wrong. Cousins wasn’t going to be insulted like that when he could make $19M on the tag. It made no sense whatsoever to take the deal the Redskins offered. None.
They messed up by low balling him early. You can say “they weren’t sold.” But it’s a FO’s job to see into the future regarding player skill… that’s what they get paid the big bucks for.
They also messed up by not signing or drafting another option at QB. If a player wants you to pay them the moon, you can’t be married to that player as your only choice during negotiations.
Again, they did draft a QB with the second overall pick the same year….
Can you trade a guy that is playing on a franchise tag? I didn’t think you could.
The teams that I could see making a serious run at Cousins are:
Broncos: Elway liked what he saw when Kirk abused his defense. They will need to restructure some contracts.
Browns: Plenty of cap room. Could use all of their draft picks to build a team around him.
Jets: Also a possibility
Arizona: maybe
49ers: Will ink a deal or franchise Garropolo
Rams: Roll with Goff
JAX: Owner is all-in with Bortles
Purely guessing, but I think the Jets will have most interest.
I think it’s Denver. The look on Elway’s face was “I’ve seen enough. Get him.”
Denver players and Denver Press are also clamoring for Cousins to be in Blaze Orange. It will be a full court press.
I think the NY press is also bandying his name about in connection with the Jets.
If you’re Cousins and you get similar deals from Denver and the Jets, who do you think he goes with?
Hope-18…you have COMPLETELY bought into the myth that the Redskins have “done Kirk wrong”.
The Redskins have just screwed up… simple as that.
Hard to negotiate with someone who wont negotiate.
Hard to negotiate with someone you have given all the leverage to
there is no right or wrong, only what is
Agreed
This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.
you don’t pay a guy $44M AND be considered wrong. Nope. Not in this world or the next. If he moves on the skins have changed his life forever. He should hold zero ill will with that kind of dough…
Rick, I have never said the Redskins have done him wrong. They have done him stupid. AND they haven’t done a good job of building a team in decades. No reason for Cousins to stay.
gee only 2 more months of he will stay or will he go back and forth between peeps
followed by X number of years of we should have resigned him or we should have not signed him
There’s so much ground we haven’t covered yet. :- l
https://media.giphy.com/media/RL0xU1daTlMoE/giphy.gif
Kirk gambled on himself and it paid off well, but where I think he “craps out” is his asking price. Someone might pay him what he wants, but perhaps he overvalued himself. We shall see.
Well, there is only one way to find “market value”. So we shall see. But it wouldn’t surprise me to see him sign with us for something around $26-27M/yr.
Yeah which he could have done last year.
You’re missing the point Rick. Cousins was evaluating the Redskins this year not the other way around. He’s deciding whether this team has any chance at all of getting to a Championship. If not, he’ll be looking for a team that has more potential in that regard. In short Cousins has been waiting for the Redskins to prove themselves to HIM, not proving himself to the Redskins. He’s shown nothing but class, professionalism, constant individual progress, production, and being the good soldier his whole time here.
team just paid him $44M. You kidding me?
Nope… because Kirk got stuck here on draft day behind RGIII and hasn’t yet been able to escape the clutches of the team. He’s never had a choice of where he wants to play or even explore that option. He knows he can play QB in the NFL at a high level and win Championships with a good team. Why waste his career here? For money? OK… not what he’s about despite some argument to the contrary here.
ok so you are joking as I suggested because only a jokester believes what you just wrote. He is ABSOLUTELY about the money and he said so right out of his own mouth “percentage of cap”.
And cry me a river about draft position and behind RG. 32 teams passed on him 4 times minus the skins. You must be his uncle or something. Its official. Uncle Hope Cousins.
Look for McDaniels to get the Titans job. There GM used to work for the Patriots.
The more I think about it, the odds might possibly shift a little in favor of Kirk agreeing to an LTD in Washington. If he and his agent are demanding top-tier bucks here is who he is up against:
Tons of FA QBS:
Drew Brees
Sam Bradford
Case Keenum
Teddy Bridgewater
Jimmy Garropolo
2018 Draft
Mason Rudolph
Lamar Jackson
Hosh Rosen
Sam Darnold
Baker Mayfield
Josh Allen
Nick Stevens
Riley Ferguson
Luke Falk
For $30 mill or so, there will be plenty of options.
Huh… I don’t see Kirk Cousins on that list…
He is on that list. I was highlighting some of the other candidates. All 3 of Minnys QBs are FAs.
Hope-18 Rick Deez • 12 minutes ago
That was this year behind a very bad line and with receivers who early in the year proved they couldn’t catch the ball in tight quarters. Kirk was being smart with the ball, not risking turnovers with bad receivers. With Garcon and Reed last year he was able to make those throws. You are twisting stats out of context to suit your argument. Weak.
—————
Actually the article Rick mentioned is based on the 2016 season — not the 2017 season. Kinda takes the wind outta your argument, doesn’t it?
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000769130/article/cam-newton-leads-nfls-top10-most-aggressive-qbs
It does… funny that I thought Cousins had one of the best ratings throwing into tight windows last year? Highest in the league maybe? Might also be that receivers were getting open, he was making good reads, and not having to throw in tight windows? Lots of context to consider.
The other thing is, does it matter? Is throwing into tight windows a lot a good thing? I’m not seeing a big correspondence between this stat and good/bad quarterbacking.
Me either but it’s the root of an argument by Rick that proves Cousins isn’t a good QB.
There have been cracks in the Steelers foundation all season . Quite a bit of behind the scenes turmoil that’s leaked out .
You can’t run stretch run plays against the Jaguars. Defense too fast.
NE wont need to do that.
Yup
You can, however, run inside.
Might be time for Pittsburgh to move on from Tomlin. Hard to say that, given his record and the franchise’s history, but his boneheaded decisions probably cost them the game yesterday. They had a crucial 4th and less than one and didn’t run a QB sneak? Since coming into the league Big Ben has converted 94% of his QB sneak attempts. What could be more obvious? I think he made that mistake twice. Then there was the idiotic onside kick attempt….
Or……. Ole’ Ben
Not to split hairs because the responsibility ultimately falls to the HC… but I’m pretty sure Tomlin, who is a defense guy, doesn’t call offensive plays
True, but he’s got to hear the calls going in, doesn’t he?
I can’t answer that question…
…but with Tomlin’s history with the Steelers I would say he get’s more than the benefit of the doubt…
I’m sure he will. P-burgh hates to fire coaches, and to be fair their continuity is one key to their success.
They won’t fire him, but he is going to have to make some changes in the off season.
Kinda funny that a team that goes 13-3 would be considering firing its head coach.
Yeah it is . They have drama with Bell’s contract , Todd Haley , etc .
I’d say when you’ve won more Super Bowls than anyone else your model should be the rule not the exception.
You’re insane
Hahahaha!
If so there are a lot of insane people out there. Pittsburgh probably has the most talented roster in the league, top to bottom. No way they should lose to Jax.
What??? Jacksonville has the best defense in the league. Defense wins championships.
They scored FORTY FIVE points on Pittsburgh.
Big Ben should run what he wants at that point.
He is 18 out of 19 attempts on QB sneaks on 4th and 1.
6 ft 6 , 260 lbs
Yes so he should say fuck it and run a sneak no matter what is called.
I think so too
Steelers are so old school and rarely just “fire” a guy for 1 decision. But nothing surprises me in sports anymore.
If there was ever an organization that understood that you don’t make rash decisions and fire good coaches because of one play, much less one game, it’s Pittsburgh.
This^^^
Kirk Cousins rarely throws into tight windows. Cousins threw just 14.3 percent of his passes to a targeted receiver who had less than a yard of separation in 2016, the second-lowest among starting quarterbacks. Only 7.8 percent of his throws that traveled 20-plus air yards went into tight windows. General manager Scott McCloughan told Cousins he was going to “going to build this roster to where you can be average and still be good,” and it appears that plan worked this season.

Hmmmm….This, from NFLN.
NFLN is in the entertainment business and anyone with half a brain can see this is a case of stats out of context. But go ahead and listen to the talking heads who aren’t right most of the time and don’t consider reality. It suits your argument so it must be right.
Oh, I get it. You and your Kirk-jerks tout stats when it’s favorable for you, and when they are critical of him, it’s “out of context”. I get it.
Stats twisted out of context to establish some cause and effect result is nonsense which is what YOU’RE touting. Try staying in reality.

Roquan Smith has declared for the NFL draft. Story coming.
Like watching that fine ass woman you’ll never pull strut by……….
8 of 11 of Minnesota’s starting defenders were drafted.
Who’s defense is better?
MInny or Jax ?
Jax…
Faster
Against the run, the defense was last in the league, but I recall the defense getting plenty of stops and giving the offense the ball back.
Your memory is failing you…
No it isn’t I saw the same thing and than I saw the offense go 3 and out and give the ball right back.
Hmmmm… you ever sit in front of your TV and think “we have them in 3rd and 11… no way we stop them here…” Of course you did. BECAUSE the Redskins set a record for 3rd down defense (as in worst ever) in 2016 and last year it was bad as well.
When Gruden completes his in depth self-assessment I wonder what he’ll come up with? Run the ball and stop the run?
That said, I do give Gruden and the whole coaching staff credit for making do with a rag tag roster all season. Signing guys off the street and starting them Sunday while staying pretty competitive most of the year was a pretty remarkable achievement.
I agree – I think the team did well given the injuries.
For the “it’s the playcallin'” crowd…a LOT of questionable play calls and coaching decisions this weekend. Can’t fire em’ all.
The Redskins (like Philly and NY) play 10 of their 16 games outside in the North East elements every year. It’s nonsensical to be weak on running the ball. Throwing the ball in the wind, rain, snow, and cold introduces more risk of failure than teams that play indoors and in warmer climates. A good running game travels well, and is vital to success in the NFC East.
…considering Jay Gruden comes from Cincy it makes no sense he’s NEVER had a hard core run game…
I DO think this season would have come out much differently without the huge number of injuries.
Agreed
I think that goes without saying… having said that coaches in the NFL don’t live long on excuses or what might have been.
The trouble with building a ground-n-pound offense today vs the 1980s is that linemen were about 50 pounds lighter in the 80s. The rash of injuries in the NFL can I think fairly be attributed to the fact that human ligaments aren’t designed to support 320 pounds. Shit tears and breaks more frequently with that kind of force applied.
So… while many people (including me) would like to see a true “Hogs 2.0” and a return to a dominant, run-first offense, the reality is that in order to put a line together that is big enough to maul defenses, you have to also account for the fact that they’re going to be injured more often than a smaller, more agile O-Line.
You can’t win on rushing alone that is for sure you better have a QB that can put p some points.
Yes, and a defense, etc.
Kirk can do that and a run game would help
Note how important the running game is outside in January.
I would be thrilled if we had to gameplan for January 😛
Been that way for eternity…
Been that way for all my time…
Yesterday and days before…..
Thank you Mr. Steve.
March 6th it is.
Just seven weeks away!
Oof!
The year before Jay came to Washington we were 5th in rushing and Cinn. was 18th. In Jay’s first year here we went from 5th to 19th and Cinn. went from 18th to 6th with the same personnel.
Jay has never had a rushing attack rank higher than 18th.
good factual pull my friend. Can’t argue that.
All this talk of Gruden not wishing to run the ball fails to recognize the true lack of talent we’ve had at the position. Matt Jones, as mentioned below was supposed to be that guy Perine too. I’m in the minority here, but I think our oline needs a lot of improvement to be that kind of team.
He didn’t run the ball in Cinn. either.

Mike Mularkey out as Titans’ head coach
Posted by Michael David Smith on January 15, 2018, 10:01 AM EST
So much for Mike Mularkey being the Titans’ coach going forward.
The Titans and Mularkey are parting ways, the Titans have announced.
That news comes just 36 hours after the Titans took a serious beatdown at the hands of the Patriots in New England. Usually, when a coach is in the divisional round of the playoffs, that means his job is safe. And Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk had previously given Mularkey a vote of confidence. But as we noted yesterday, the Titans could move on from Mularkey anyway, especially if they have a coach they’re interested in hiring and know that that coach is interested in them as well.
The report says the decision between Mularkey and the Titans is “mutual,” although it’s hard to see Mularkey walking away unless he knew he didn’t have the confidence of team ownership. The Titans’ brass wasn’t sold on Mularkey, and now they’ll look for a new head coach, while Mularkey will hope some other team is interested in a coach coming off a playoff win.
Look for McDaniels to take this job.
Shurmer
Shurmer to NYC.
I’m holding out for Jeff Fisher to the Giants
Ha, eTrod!
Our O-line this past year was touting itself as the second coming of the Hogs. Maybe without all the injuries they could have lived up to that monicker, but it remains to be seen if they can ever be an exceptional run blocking line.
The fact that they were that injured says they are anything but the second coming of the hogs. Those dudes were as durable as they come.
26 different offensive line combinations through 14 weeks. Might be a record. Can’t have any expectation of offensive production with that. Then of course seven different RB’s.
When you have 7 running backs, you really have none.
Yep… but Cousins is the big fail here. Let’s be straight about that. A GREAT QB could win with 26 different line combinations, seven different RB’s and WR’s that run bad routes and don’t catch the ball.
No one says that and if you’d pay the F attention no one hates Cousins. There is a sizable contingent here who would love to have KC sign a LTD…just not at a number that puts him among the top 5 paid QB’s in the NFL because he is flat-out not worth that.
So based on that reality, many here are okay with him going to strike it rich with another team where he will take up what, 20% of their entire cap?
You really need to be able to separate hating Kirk from desiring success for the team.
KC needs to get paid. These are professionals with short careers. I don’t hate him for trying to maximize that.
You’re beginning to sound a lot like flounder…
That’s way too harsh Hope…
jk Flounder…well sorta
Laughing… probably 65 but if the shoe fits…
I’m with you about KC but he seems to be hated for trying to get his pockets straight!
Gruden’s idea of a RB is a guy who can pick up the blitz and catch the ball out of the backfield.
Which is the best you can hope for when you don’t have a 4.5 YPC type of RB….which we don’t have and Jay has almost never had.
Jay doesn’t run enough to have that type of back.
Or….he doesn’t have that type of back….which is why he cannot maintain a rush attack.
Cause and effect. When you average 2 yards per carry with the run and almost 8 yards per attempt with the pass, you ain’t gonna run it because you’re gonna end up going three and out every time.
He also had Alfred Morris who had a pretty good year in Dallas
Like I said Gruden’s idea of a RB is a guy who can pick up the blitz and catch the ball out of the backfield. Not a one cut and go, between the tackles guy.
Wasn’t his guy and was seeking a bigger payday than the one he got in Dallas. No one cried about him leaving at the time. His success with us was tied to that ZBS.
I think you’ll see a different Jay Gruden if he ever gets ahold of an every down franchise back who can consistently average over 4 YPC. He’s a passing coach, yes, but he’s never had a back like that, ever. He tried to rely on the run game this year, but the players just weren’t capable of it.
The team isn’t looking for that guy though Steve. Gruden’s idea of a RB is a guy who can pick up the blitz and catch the ball out of the backfield as I said. Those are the traits he most cherishes in a back.
So why does the team keep drafting big plodding backs in the third?
They’ve only taken one back in the 3rd round in over 15 years. Matt Jones 3 years ago.
Ok. Samaje PErine was early fourth round….
Matt Jones was supposed to be that guy – he wasn’t. Samaje Perine was supposed to be that guy – he isn’t. This year’s draft will tell the tale on this issue, because it’s RB rich, and there are several rd 1 and 2 guys the Redskins should be in position to draft if they so choose.
If they choose is the right answer. Matt Jones was the highest selected RB by the Skins in over 15 years, Perine was supposed to be this super strong back that ran over people. Not so much though.
I don’t think it’s fair to say the book is written on Perine when he was running behind guys who the Redskins had pulled out of supermarkets or whatever to throw in front of him.
That is a salient point Kelly.
Thank you, and excellent use of the word “salient”.
Agreed… and he seemed to improve as the season went on.
^That’s what I was trying to say above! lol
I think Gruden understands the value of a rushing attack, he just hasn’t had a runningback worth a damn.
You gotta be able to run…and you gotta be able to stop the run.
The more things change…the more they stay the same.
Only been saying this for the entire time Gruden has been here… every… single… year.
We all say it….every…single…year.
But we can’t run and we can’t stop the run. That pretty much renders the QB moot unless he is a HOF-type of clutch killah……which Kirk is not.
There is a difference between ‘statistically good’ and ‘good’.
The best example I can think of is the second Redskins-Eagles game this year. Statistically, Cousins and Wentz were both good but watching the game, Wentz was on a completely different level.
This argument won’t end. A QB can’t put up numbers without playing well, especially when he has an exceptionally weak supporting cast. If Cousins was average to below average on this team we would be the Browns.
you put Cousins in a situation with a decent running game and a pretty good defense
he wins 11+ games
statistically he’s a top 6 QB
just don’t put a game on his shoulders alone
“Stats are for losers.”

My top three wants:
1. QB
2. DLine
3. RB
Not even checking in at WaPo anymore. Anything going on over there?
Like you, I’m not checking. WaPo and I are on opposite ends of the spectrum if you get my drift. No reason to read them without Redskins news.

You post there more than anyone else.
yeah but nothing football related though
sort of a passive resistance protest
Yeah I know.
@ D_C
Good call on Miles Jack. He looks to be pretty good following that micro-fracture surgery to his knee.
that surgery is successful about 55-65% of the time (but the results have been tending upward)
so it is a big red flag on draft day
The younger you are the better when you have that surgery
Another reason why I thought Greg Oden was 45 when he was drafted with that condition.
after watching the games yesterday, the more I’m convinced that we need to draft another stud DL
#build the trenches
I agree… we need a defense that can help win games.
100%. OLur D was entirely different when Allen was in there. We lost him, and our D went down hill quickly. We’ve always been able to get an edge rush, but every QB was able to just ste up into the pocket.
The Greek is good, but no Allen. Add a top DL and the Greek can rotate in. Will help keep them fresh and you have backup if there is an injury (if you lose Allen or the new DL, the consequences won’t be as severe if you only have Allen and he goes down).
Squinns, one of Philly’s strengths is a constant D line rotation that keeps players fresh on every down. They attack the line of scrimmage and play in the other teams backfield. We would do well to follow that model in my opinion.
We agree!
I want another stud Dlineman. After watching the difference Allen made at the beginning of the season and seeing the D deterioriate without him, I am 100% convinced that we need to go Dline first round.
The Greek and Allen scheme well together.
And wehn Allen went down….
Need another stud in there in case of injuries.
We need speed everywhere

OH a few???? And he’s worth $19M? OK… Cousins is the 3rd best QB in the league since 2015 and he’s had a few good games and is worth $19M. You argument holds no water as usual.
___________________
Cousins may have the 3rd best stats in the league since 2015, but he has not been the third best QB in the league since then.
He’s a guy on one of the worst teams in the league, yet he’s putting up performance after performance that ranks him in the top 3 QB’s in the league. Might want to get a dose of reality here.
Yep, you might.
Clever… but wrong…
We are not going to agree on this subject. I think he is a very good QB, but don’t ever see him being elite.
I REALLY hope we sign him to a LTD, but doubt that happens (as I don’t believe Cousins wants to be here).
He is in an offense made to put up yards e doesn’t however put up points and he is not even close to the 3rd best QB in the league.
You live in an alternate reality… he is in an offense with no running game every year, a bad line this season, and a bad receiving corps this season. So he puts up numbers with a bad cast around him but he’s not a great QB? You literally have your head in the sand.
He moves the ball very weel between the 20’s.
And, yes, Gruden’s system is QB centric, so of course his stats are going to be high (if he’s competent in the offensive scheme).
Stats don’t make a QB the best in the league Cousins does not have what it takes to be an elite QB sorry.

I remember a lotta grumblings in the Jacksonville locker room about how hard and physical their training camp was under Coughlin and Marrone’s regime. Not surprising to see the Jaguars in the position they’re in as a result of that.
He has done wonders for that team.
Awesome, thanks steve.
Wow….Great Info!
Thanks guys.
Guys, don’t worry, we’ll have plenty of our opinion pieces and shows coming this week, but we had to publish the calendar at some point.
You guys are doing a great job.
There’s no worry. Squinns is just ribbing ya.
If he gives you anymore grief, post pictures of cats.
