Rick’s Rant

January 29, 2012

By Richard Rogers

I’m sick and tired of a few things Washington Redskins.  First, I’m sick and tired of the whole Kirk saga.  It’s old. It’s exhausting, and frankly, I don’t care what happens one way or the other.  If he’s here great; if he leaves fine.  I’m just done.  I’m sick of the whole, “Kirk been done wrong” mantra.  I’m tired of “victim Kirk”. No matter what happens, Kirk is the “hero” and the Redskins are the “villain”. We’ve not had quarterback “peace” in Redskinsland in forever. It’s time.  Roll with Colt, draft a rookie, or bring in a free agent. I don’t care.  I’m sick of the “Kirk hive” and hearing local radio personalities shill for Kirk Cousins every day.  It’s sickening! I’ve never heard of such in all my years listening to radio. It’s actually pretty pathetic. And if he does leave, I’m certain we’ll hear about “the one who got away” for the next two years.

Also, I’m tired of hearing fans whine about “leaving the Redskins for good”.  Here’s what I think about that.  Good riddance! I couldn’t care less if you go root for the Montreal Allouettes. Just go.  I know losing is frustrating, and it’s been a generation since we’ve had a sustained winning team, but I ain’t leavin’….EVER. Stop calling up talking about the “glory days”. We get it.  Everybody knows about the 80’s an early 90’s. Those days are gone. And on your way out, lose the directions to how to get back to the team when they do eventually win.  There is nothing worse than a bandwagon fan.  Be gone!

I’m tired of the word parsing. Doug Williams gave an impromptu interview at the Senior Bowl last week, where he called the draft a “crapshoot”.  Twitter went nuts. First of all, it IS a crapshoot.  He was just being honest. Had Scot McCloughan said that, you’d have been falling all over yourselves to “like” it on Twitter. Look, time will tell as to whether Doug Williams knows what he’s going, but I’m going to give him a shot.  Hell, what choice do we have? The Redskins have eight picks in the upcoming draft, and if it’s anything like the ’17 draft, and it’s still early, the Redskins are in good shape.

And another thing: many Redskins fans have called for Bruce Allen to be fired, and I’m not getting into whether he should or shouldn’t.  His record is not good and he’s had some missteps, but here’s the thing – you can fire Allen, Gruden, or anyone else over there at Redskins Park, but what have we seen over the last 18 years to make you think the next person will be any good?

Finally, stop it with the “noise” about Redskins not paying or “lowballing” players.  It’s called N-E-G-O-T-I-A-T-I-O-N-S! I’m glad some of you aren’t managing the salary cap.  You can’t just pay everybody what they want.  If there’s one thing the Redskins have done well, it’s been managing the salary cap. The Redskins have signed quite a few of their homegrown talent to fair market deals in recent years.  Some players will hit free agency. Some will be re-signed here, while others will be elsewhere next season.  The Redskins were smart to lock up Mason Foster and Quinton Dunbar, and were even smarter by rewarding Chris Thompson with a new deal when they did. There’s a salary cap in place for a reason.  Oh yeah, and by the way, stop with the “Nate Sudfeld is playing in a Super Bowl” garbage as some sort of indictment on the Redskins.  We couldn’t carry three quarterbacks.  So if Sudfeld ends up being the next phenom, so be it.

That’s all. Rant over. Rick out!
