Roster move: Redskins Tender Ty Nsekhe

As expected, the Redskins have placed a tender on restricted free agent Ty Nsekhe that more or less ensures that he will be back with the team next year. The 2nd round tender the team used would allow Nsekhe to negotiate with other NFL teams, but give the Redskins a chance to match any contract offer and get a 2nd round draft pick in return if they chose not to match an offer received by Nsekhe.
Nsekhe is in his final year with the team as a restricted free agent. He has been a key player for the team over the last few seasons as the principal swing tackle, filling in admirably left and right tackle and even left guard in response to injuries to starters, including All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams.

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have placed a second-round tender on restricted free agent tackle Ty Nsekhe.
Nsekhe (6-8, 338) has appeared in 42 career regular season games with 11 starts. In 2017, he appeared in 11 games for Washington, making five starts in the final six weeks of the season.
Nsekhe, 32, played collegiately at Texas State and Tarleton State after attending Bowie H.S. in Arlington, Texas. He was born Oct. 27, 1985.

Report: Saints, Drew Brees progressing toward two-year deal

Drew Brees was at the Saints’ facility on Monday for tackle Zach Strief’s retirement press conference and that gave him the opportunity to spend a little time talking about a new contract as well.
That conversation appears to have gone well. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports that Brees and the Saints have made “significant progress” toward a two-year deal that would keep Brees in New Orleans. Rapoport adds that the “belief” is that the deal will get to the finish line on Tuesday.
Other teams were allowed to contact Brees’ representatives on Monday and the Vikings reportedly did exactly that. As PFT reported Tuesday morning, however, there’s no sign that Brees is looking to leave New Orleans and getting a deal done before Wednesday afternoon’s start of the league year would avoid Brees’ current contract voiding. That would create an $18 million charge on the Saints’ cap just as free agency gets rolling, but the charge would be spread out if the sides can get a new deal done before that point.
It looks like things are trending that way as Tuesday gets going.

The 31 mil is really probably about 18 million to sign all FA under the rule of 51, when you include Smith’s contract and the projected draft allotment. We’ll see the structure of Smith’s contract tomorrow evening, and then finally know his cap hit. How much of the g’d money is roster bonuses in year 4 and 5 will make a big difference vs signing bonus.
People gotta realize…a lot more of that $48 million in space they’re looking at is already spent than they might be thinking.
There’s not a ton of loot to go on some big FA spree. That’s not going to happen.
One way to think about it would be that they have about prob $15 mil to sign guys that are not vet min type guys… acknowledging that if they wanted to create more cap, they could, but they’ll stay medium. prob 3-4 guys that are attempts to make the team better, maybe with 1 “big name” and that “big name”, maybe they could bring Bree and Brown back and those would be the big signings.
They have 22mil to sign FA.

I really root for Ty. He was a great guest when we interviewed him – thoughtful, intelligent, and well spoken. He’s been through it all, football-wise, so I’m glad to see him get a few years in the NFL, and he’s made it to the pension minimum.
Good point on the pension.
2nd round tender should guarantee nobody sign him.

Are only two teams seriously chasing Kirk Cousins?

With the negotiating window open and plenty of calls being made and texts being exchanged, questions are emerging about whether and to what extent the market for quarterback Kirk Cousins is as robust as believed.
As one league source explained it to PFT, the early sense is that only two teams have shown serious interest in Cousins: The Jets and the Vikings.
Other teams may have made a phone call and/or placed a ballpark number on the table, but the thinking is that the Jets and Vikings are the two truly serious candidates for Cousins’ services.
With news that the Vikings have contacted the Drew Brees camp, Minnesota seems to be going all in for a franchise quarterback who would help the team get over the hump. Or, alternatively, they’re trying to get Case Keenum to accept a Bortlesque offer to remain in the job that landed in his lap last year — and that he performed admirably, for most of the season.
Larry Michael says all is well , now is not the time to panic .

Ty’s fine for what he does. But I’d rather get younger…and better.
