2018 Draft Preview, Part 8: Tight Ends

March 29, 2018

by Adam Taraschke

We are less than one month away from the NFL draft and now we’re getting into the nitty gritty. From this week until draft day I will be hitting the four biggest positions of need for this Redskins team.  Today, it’s tight ends.  Tight end is another position that a casual fan would not think is a major need, but with Jordan Reed’s health concerns and Vernon Davis getting up there in age, Washington is due for an all-around playmaker at the position.  This tight end class seems underwhelming at a glance due to its lack of elite talent, however, the depth and consistency of this group is impressive.  There will be at least a half dozen tight ends that play long successful careers out of this class and I believe the Redskins could get a solid player at a great value this year.

  1. Hayden Hurst (South Carolina) 6’4″, 250
  2. Dallas Goedert (South Dakota State) 6’5″, 255
  3. Mike Gesicki (Penn State) 6’5″, 247
  4. Troy Fumagali (Wisconsin) 6’6″, 248
  5. Ian Thomas (Indiana) 6’5″, 248
  6. Dalton Schultz (Stanford) 6’6″, 242
  7. Mark Andrews (Oklahoma) 6’5″, 256
  8. Durham Smythe (Notre Dame) 6’5″, 257
  9. Tyler Conklin (Central Michigan) 6’4″, 240
  10. Ryan Izzo (Florida State) 6’5″, 250

Day 1 prospect: Hayden Hurst (South Carolina) 6’4”, 250

Strengths: He shows excellent quickness for his size.  Versatile offensive piece who can line up all over the formation. He plays with a relentless motor when blocking.  Solid hands with the ability to catch the ball naturally away from his body.  Tough when coming across the middle of the field.  He has shown promise as a blocker, but his technique needs improving.   He is a powerful runner after the catch.  He is a solid route runner who has shown he can run away from linebackers.

Weaknesses: He is not a polished run blocker.  He needs to work on his consistency in his technique when it comes to blocking.  He will be 25 this year so age is obviously a negative for him compared to others.  He needs to be more consistent in his stems and releases as not to give away the routes he runs.  He could use 10-15 more pounds on his frame.

Overall: Hurst is a great football player and the best all around tight end in the class, however, I do not think any tight end is worth a 1st round pick this year.  Hurst is the closest thing to a 1st round talent this class has to offer.  I think he would be a great option in the 2nd round, but the 1st would be a big-time reach.  He offers versatility in the pass game and would add another smart, moveable piece to this offense.  He is not a great run blocker, but his strength and tenacity make it hard to believe he won’t develop into a quality blocker.  His age will be a factor later in his career, but right now he is the best all around tight end in the class and he would go a long way to stabilizing this uncertain offense.

Day 2 prospect: Mike Gesicki (Penn State) 6’5”, 247

Strengths: Extremely explosive athlete with vertical ability down the field.  He is a lethal red zone weapon.  Great feet for a big guy.  Smooth route runner with loose hips.  Outstanding ball skills.  He can jump out of the gym and uses his volleyball and basketball background to help him sky for contested catches.  He sets up his routes very well.  He is disciplined in his release, stems, and routes consistently.  He can run any route he is asked to.

Weaknesses:  He is not a good run blocker.  He has a skinny frame that could desperately use 10 pounds. He has trouble beating press coverage.  He needs to get stronger to be able to compete as a blocker in the NFL.  His motor in the run game must improve.  He lacks technique to help overcome his lack of aggression as a blocker.

Overall: Gesicki is a prospect who is hard to grade.  He is a guy with an elite athletic profile who has shown he can affect the passing game, but he may be the worst run blocking tight end in the entire class.  Now, with the NFL becoming a passing league a player like Gesicki can thrive without being asked to block, but most teams prefer a well-rounded player. The Redskins have struggled to find a real in-line blocking tight end to compliment Reed and Davis.  He would give Washington a serious weapon in the pass game, but would still leave them without a decent run blocker.  As a day 2 pick you can’t pass up on the versatility and impact he brings the pass game.  If he slips into the 3rd round I think Washington would be wise to make a move up to get him.

Day 3 prospect: Dalton Schultz (Stanford) 6’6”, 242

Strengths: One of the best run blocking tight ends I’ve ever watched.  He is a 6th offensive lineman when he is one the field.  Plays with great discipline and fundamentals in the run game.  He has a great frame for the position.  He has shown to be smooth in and out of breaks.  He finds the weak spot of a defense and exploits it.  Smart route runner who makes the QB’s life easier. He has solid footwork.  He has the toughness and athleticism to be a problem in the middle of the field.

Weaknesses: He is limited as a route runner and tends to telegraph his routes as he runs them.  Despite his height and toughness, he needs to add more weight at the next level. He lacks elite speed and can struggle separating from defenders. He is limited after the catch due to his average lateral ability.

Overall: If the Redskins need a blocking tight end then look no further.  Schultz plays like someone slapped his mama on every play.  He blocks with outstanding fundamentals and a vigor you can’t teach.  He is good enough of an athlete to be a reliable receiving threat, but he would make his greatest impact in the run game.  If he makes it to Washington’s pick in the 4th round I think he would make a great fit and a great value selection.  He would take the burden of run blocking away from Reed and Davis and give Gruden another big, athletic kid to work with.  He can develop into a full time starting tight end as he serves as the primary run blocker on early downs.  If I were to pick any tight end in the appropriate draft slot, in terms of value, it would be Schultz in the 4th round.

Favorite prospect: Dallas Goedert (South Dakota State) 6’5”, 255

Strengths: Versatile weapon in the pass game.  He plays with a natural fluidity that most men his size don’t have.  Physical route runner who is not affected by contact down the field.  Big, strong hands make him a reliable pass catcher.  He is a mismatch nightmare when it comes down to safeties or LBs covering him.  Explosive athlete who can attack the ball at its highest point.  Uses his size to create space for himself in the pass game.  He has the size and strength to be a solid blocking tight end.  Tough kid with a blue-collar background.

Weaknesses: Needs to sell his routes better.  Must work his stems and release to better disguise his routes.  He needs to continue to develop as a nuanced route runner.  Goes for highlight play too often, must focus and make plays that are available. He is an average ball carrier.  His attitude when it comes to blocking needs to change.

Overall: Goedert is the next mismatch nightmare in the NFL.  He is going to feast on slow LBs and small safeties who try to cover him 1 on 1.  He has quick feet and strong hands.  He has all the traits you look for in a starting tight end.  He can make plays all over the field and would make a great companion for Alex Smith.  He has the strength to be a factor against the run, but he needs a coach to develop his fundamentals as a blocker.  He would come in and give the Redskins a future replacement for both Reed and Davis in one player.  He can be a versatile chess piece you deploy all over the formation as a rookie and can be developed into a top 10 tight end in the NFL.  The level of competition is a worry, but less of a worry when you dominate the way he did.  If he is still available when Washington picks in the 2nd round they should pull the trigger.  He would make everyone on the offensive side of the ball happy and would make opposing defenses sweat a little more preparing for this team.

Highest Ceiling: Dallas Goedert

Highest Floor: Hayden Hurst

Most Pro Ready: Hayden Hurst

Best Run Blocker: Dalton Schultz

Best Receiving Threat: Mike Gesicki

Most Athletic: Mike Gesicki

Biggest Riser: Durham Smythe

Biggest Sleeper: Troy Fumagali

STRENGTHS Squatty frame carries thickly muscled arms and a barrel chest. Plays with a sturdy, wide base and is hard to knock off-balance. Hips stay under his hands. Low center of gravity and powerful base allows him to play under and through redirect blocks once he gets to the edge. Has fast-twitch initial hands. Punches first into opponent’s shoulders preventing them from capturing his frame. Stone cold killer. Fierce and persistent. Toxic to opposing linemen. Hands can be violent and sudden. Shows some two-gap ability as a shade nose. Never stops hustling and is willing to chase a tackle opportunity all over the field, like a cancerous virus that never stops.

    • in all seriousness, I like that pick, but he’s moved up from maybe “if he’s there in the 6th…” to “if he’s there in the 4th”

  • STRENGTHS NFL-worthy build with good size and a broad, tapered chest. Wingspan measured over 82 inches at the NFLPA game. Tape is full of him bludgeoning blockers across from him. Explosive upper body power. Carries bang behind his pads and is able to knock opponents off-balance when his leverage is right. Decent lateral quickness to flatten out runners to the perimeter. Shows athletic ability to work edge-to-edge as rusher. Gets good mileage from his arm-over move and works his hands and feet in unison. Possesses balance to recover.

    Touting this kid also, John Franklin Myers, 6’4, 292, ran a 4.75 40…if he’s there in the 5th of 6th, that’s a STEAL

  • Been touting this guy for a while…Kentavious Street

STRENGTHS Powerhouse with compact frame and a 700 pound squat to his name. Able to cave-in lesser tight ends who are tasked with trying to base block him. Shows some fight at the point of attack against tackles despite his lack of length. Heavy hitter when tackling. Runs through the ball carrier and makes sure they feel it. Straight-line pursuit speed appears to be faster than expected on tape. Won’t go to it often, but has access to an explosive spin move that can win as inside counter when he times it right. Uses low center of gravity and powerful rip move to play through a blocker’s edge once he gets the door open.

I actually wanted him to run for president. He’s another dude who will hang his balls out while telling countries who wish to do us harm they are about to have their asses handed to them. Also, when asked a direct question…he always, always provides an answer without tap dancing or doublespeak.

That dude has served under Rep’s and Dem’s and the nation is better off when he is on point.

Do your homework rather than just looking at the current President who has brought him into the cabinet and basing your uninformed opinion accordingly.

        • FYI – Obama had many admirable qualities that I liked . Just saying .

          • Josh RosenSquinns

I like Trump’s response to the school shootings. And, I really hope he is serious about engineering this country’s infrastructure overhaul.

          • he’s had open conversations at least , with fellow lawmakers on both sides . IDK , he’s a politician but not in the traditional sense .

          • My wife can tell you some crazy shit that goes on in the school and it gets harder every year to discipline and keep control . It’s insane actually.

          • Josh RosenSquinns

^I believe that, Buck. We’ve got to find solutions, and both sides need to be open instead of digging their heals in the sand, saying my way or the highway.

          • That’s damn near impossible .

          • Middle school kids vaping in school , having sex , drugs , not to mention total disrespect for authority .

          • Josh RosenSquinns

            Well… the having sex part….

Yeah. My kid’s in preschool. We’re really going to have to figure out what to do after the first couple grades of grade school. Public/private/ Move to a safe/good school district. Etc.

          • That’s scary in todays world. I don’t envy you , but you’ll figure out what’s best .

          • Private schools are better, trust me.

          • Home schooling?

          • What!!! They are having sex in 3-4th grade?

          • Josh RosenSquinns

I know. Its sad. I remember the days of Reagan and Tip O’Neill going at it, but ultimately getting things done together. Everyone today takes such an extreme position on each side, and the sides are getting further and further apart with no room for compromise.

          • Clinton and Newt for that matter . That was a good era .

          • Josh RosenSquinns

            Yep.

  • The Su’a Cravens trade is official, and the team announced that they waived LeShun Daniels. I’m not putting up a new post just for that.

When you talk about putting a SRO in every school in FL most counties you are talking millions of dollars per year and hiring additional LEOs to staff the positions

  • So there is a big dust up in my local school district . The parents and the schools are calling for an SRO (school resource officer ) for safety and obvious purposes in today’s environment . Since their budget has already been approved for this year , they can’t get any extra money . The HS gets one , but nobody else does . My wife works at the middle school and she can tell you all kinds of stories about these kids and how they can’t discipline them properly or get them the hell out of there . They got kids that are certifiable crazy and they can’t do anything about it .

    • Middle school in a lot of ways is worse than HS, 7th and 8th grade is when kids start the process of being confused about themselves, the world, but are completely juvenile and got them weird chemicals flowing around their bodies.

my wife quit teaching because she was teaching both 7th and 9th graders at a combined school. they can’t discipline them nor do much, and it was just really a handful of students.

basically teachers are expected to be expert psychologists, generals, and SMEs. but that’s really a high bar. and if you think about it, and sitting in a lecture room with 30 other kids isn’t really a way to learn. and it is a hatecrime to suggest that as a gross generalization (acknowledging that there are several main categories by which individuals learn best) boys and girls learn differently. and most public schooling is unintentionally optimized more for girls. but for this context I don’t know that matters, anecdotally, it seemed (that at least in 7th grade) that the girls were just as big of a discipline problem as boys.

      • My wife has a concealed weapons permit but she obviously can’t take it in the school , but she whishes she could . There are a few “students” in there she will admit she is afraid of , and she doesn’t get scared easy . She has said for several years , she is afraid one of them will bring a gun or something deadly in their backpack . I’m talking about kids with severe problems that shouldn’t be there .

What WaPo has to say about the hole Trump/Amazon thing

We all know what’s really going on here. Trump couldn’t care less about whether a corporation is paying appropriate taxes, or about the income of the Postal Service, or the fate of mom-and-pop businesses. His rage at Amazon comes from one place: the company’s founder and chief executive, Jeff Bezos, who also owns The Washington Post, the very newspaper you’re reading right now. That paper has reported extensively on Trump and his White House, reporting that paints a completely accurate and therefore highly unflattering picture of this president and the ongoing goat rodeo over which he presides.

    • That’s actually a quote from a supposedly professional newspaper?

      • noonefromtampa

direct quote from an op-ed piece

        • WaPo is really showing its pettiness and unprofessionalism. No wonder newspapers are dying.

          • Anything goes on an op-ed piece. But Trump doesn’t hate Amazon. He just hates that Amazon owns the WaPo.

          • Amazon doesn’t own the WaPo.

          • Bezos does

          • Yes, correct, so…Amazon doesn’t own the WaPo.

          • Doesn’t matter to Trump. He’ll go after Bezos because he owns both the WaPo and founded Amazon.

          • Ironic that the one president in half a century who refuses to show his taxes complains about someone else’s taxes.

          • Name the federal law that requires a presidential candidate to disclose his tax returns. Trump was smart for not doing it – if he had, a couple million amateur CPAs would sift through them, not understand what they were looking at, make all sorts of kooky declarations about them, and create absurd talking points for years. I don’t blame him at all.

          • And he just set the precedent for all future candidates to also not disclose their taxes, So just remember that.

          • I’m fine with it. I haven’t looked at any of their tax returns. As long as they meet the federal requirements, which Trump did, that’s fine by me. The only disclosed records I read page by page were George W. Bush’s military records.

          • He’s setting a lot of precedents. None of them good.

          • Josh RosenSquinns

An op-ed is a written prose piece typically published by a newspaper or magazine which expresses the opinion of a named author usually not affiliated with the publication’s editorial board. Op-eds are different from both editorials (opinion pieces submitted by editorial board members) and letters to the editor (opinion pieces …

          • Yes, and the portion of said op-ed quoted here is petty, unprofessional, and exemplifies the attitudes that have caused half the country to not trust media sources they used to trust.

          • Are Hannity opinion pieces professional?

          • Don’t know; I don’t read them, but I do know that he tells the world he’s not a journalist.

          • Josh RosenSquinns

And an Op-Ed by definition does not come from a journalist….

          • I 100%, positively guarantee that whoever wrote that would label himself a journalist.

          • He might call himself a columnist.

          • I’d bet my life that he or she has a journalism degree and calls himself a journalist, but I don’t care enough to go figure it out.

          • as much as Maddow’s are or the douche that comes on after him , I mean her.

          • I’m sure you know that this has literally nothing to do with why newspapers are dying so I won’t harp on your comment.

But following Donald’s logic- shouldn’t he be trying to prop up all newspapers like he is trying to assist mom and pop retailers and the postal service?

You know- business that are losing out to technology and consumer freedom of choice?

He should not have ventured into this amazon deal at all and it’s abundantly clear that it was because of the Bezoss /Washington Post connection.

          • Are you saying Trump is vindictive? Shocking.

          • In other words he is exactly like the people that oppose him so viciously . Birds of a feather

        • that’s why I always say each party is worse than the other

      • I firmly believe that history will eventually show Obama to be the bad guy that I think he is, although it will take awhile.

      • History will show that Obama was one of our better presidents, and there’s a very good chance that Trump will be the very worst.

    Ford meh

the real brains was William S. Knudsen

he worked at Ford then General Motors

he was the expert on creating assembly lines and mass production manufacturing

he was head of war production for US in WW2

emigrated from Denmark to USA in 1900

one of his most famous acts was when he went to where they were creating a new massive airplane manufacturing plant out side of St Louis and there were huge disagreements on how the plant should be laid out, he walked around for several hours talking with the various engineers and parts makers/assemblers and then sat down and drew out on a large piece of paper the most efficient way to lay out the plant to maximize plane production in about an hour

that plant was able to turn out hundreds of bombers a month

Germany or Japan has no facility that could match the production of that plant

and he worked to set up dozens of plants to make ships, planes, tanks, etc.

    • And Ford harnessed some of that brilliance, if even just for awhile.
We sell our ability to people like Ford, or rent it anyway.

Sick of seeing the country slide into 3rd world territory when it comes to some of that stuff.

          • CNN isn’t behind good infrastructure. All they care about is discrediting him. What he does or says is totally irrelevant.

          • Generally I don’t listen to any 24-7 news stuff. I’ll look at bullet points whenever the AP or whoever has them. As long as we fund the supersonic rail & keep putting money into faster than light travel research.

      • No Punt Intended

        Bingo.

  • I order from Amazon as a convenience, most stores don’t sell parts or tools, actually fucking have it in stock if they do sell it, or have enough registers open to take my money in a timely manner. From Amazon, UPS, FedEx, or USPS delivers to my door. Stores that complain about online shopping but don’t bother to serve the customer can kick rocks.

    • It’s like horse and buggy manufacturers complaining about Ford. The economy (not the President) should pick winners and losers.

    • There’s something to be said when you go into a store and a salesperson who’s knowledgeable helps you find what you need. But the problem with most stores, the workers don’t know their own products anymore. Go into a Home Depot, the stock boys can barely tell you what side of the hammer to hold onto.

      • Truth

        • Thing is there are many times where I’ll admit I wish I had someone knowledgeable helping me know what to purchase. For example, my fridge has a water filter on it, but it’s an older model, the company doesn’t make replacements anymore, so you have to get some 3rd party thing. I will look at several websites but find contradicting info, and no person to talk to for answers.

  • I have a good friend who was involved with Amazon’s drone delivery program. He’s moved on to Amazon’s flight ops now, but when he was in the drone program, he briefed Bezos many times. Told me Bezos is a guy who (1) is rude, abrupt, lacking in social skills, and not a nice guy, but far more importantly, (2) doesn’t care a wit about the here and now, or the details of things like how they were working to get the drones operational – he’s a visionary who only thinks about results 10 years from now. Didn’t give two poops about, say, coordinating with the FAA; only wanted to know when it would be done. Interesting and not surprising. I don’t like Bezos’ politics, particularly, and neither does my friend, but I admire his vision for what he saw in Amazon years ago when everyone thought he was crazy.

    • That reflects 100% in their Amazon Fire tablet’s OS. Complete garbage.

    • Trump seems to value people based on their wealth. By that measure Bezos is worth about 100 Trumps.

    • but not only that, once Bezos is gone, Amazon is done. the big shareholders will take over, and that long term vision for Amazon that keeps pumping money back into the company will be gone…

I think if you had built a company like that, while all the rest of the employees would see themselves as important peices to it, I think it would be tough to make that transition as “that guy” from “these guys are extensions of me, I pay them as labor under the umbrella of my vision” to, these guys are in some ways, “partners” in rowing the boat and having a creative and leadership role. because small businesses start out as the former, and often entrepreneurs are “that way”

    • Not shocking to me that he’s a 10 years from now guy. I think most technological visionary types are.

  • Though the thing I have noticed about Amazon is that you still need to shop around.

I made that mistake when ordering T-discs (kinda like K-cups, but the Tassimo version). And then a box from Bed Bath and Beyond arrived. yep. someone takes your order on Amazon, takes a little scratch for it, and then places an order at BBB and has it delivered to your home. And I imagine that is… how some dudes make a living, it’s a mod of the 4 hour work week model from the book. It isn’t a lot of money difference, but 50 cents here… 50 cents there, and boom. you make 10 grand a month doing very little after putting in a few long hours setting up your “business” It prob is so automated that it merely just places a bot order on BB&B. I dunno.

Years ago, when Amazon had few warehouses, it was able to get a competitive advantage by not charging sales tax. When retailers ship goods to states where they don’t have a physical presence, they do not have to charge sales tax.

But Amazon has been adding to its national network of distribution centers, and last year it announced it would start charging sales tax in every state, whether it has a physical presence there or not.

There are also third-party re-seller situations where Amazon does not collect the sales tax and leaves the third-party responsible for them

          I feel like that’s a safe assumption.

      • weird because they love Dollar General and Walmart

    • noonefromtampa

Trump actually slammed Amazon for not paying their full share of taxes giving them an unfair advantage over regular retailers

if you’re going to complain at least get the facts correct

      • noonefromtampa

that being said there is only a small segment of their business where appropriate taxes are not being collected

millennial buying patterns have shifted away from traditional brick and mortar stores

and Trump’s real problem is most likely with Bezos and the WaPo he owns

        • The President doesn’t like Bezos because of the WaPo, for sure, and because he leans left.

          • Supposdly Bezos actually leans libertarian from what I’ve heard from someone who worked with him.

          • To Steve, if he isn’t a full-on Hannity fanboy he leans left.

          • There’s absolutely nothing about Trump that you could possibly say that has any credibility.

And by the way, I don’t watch Hannity, or any Fox News show, ever.

        • Amazon is one of the few online retailers that actually does collect state taxes on most transactions.

        • noonefromtampa

          here is the tweet

I have stated my concerns with Amazon long before the Election. Unlike others, they pay little or no taxes to state & local governments, use our Postal System as their Delivery Boy (causing tremendous loss to the U.S.), and are putting many thousands of retailers out of business!

          — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) March 29, 2018

          • So he’s complaining (wrongly) about both taxes and about Amazon putting retailers out of business.

          • noonefromtampa

you purport that the president doesn’t understand free market economics which is not correct

          • Those who hate President Trump say alot of things about him that aren’t correct, simply because they are still butt-hurt that he beat The Greatest and Most-Qualified Woman in History.

          • It appears to be 100% correct, as evidence by MANY of the things he has said and done. Amazon, for one. Two, is itching for a trade war, which he incorrectly claims an be “easily won.” Virtually no one thinks this is a good idea. Three, he wants to impose steel tariffs, saying it would be good for American workers, when the truth is that it would harm FAR more American workers than it would help. Etc.

          • I”ll take the word of a billionaire with a business degree from Penn over a guy named Different Cat.

          • Or you could take the word of far more successful billionaires and virtually every economist, including the ones that were in Trump’s cabinet.

          • noonefromtampa

you were talking Amazon nor tariffs

and you were wrong about your Amazon statement

          • You expanded it to “free markets,” which is what tariffs are designed to hinder. And I obviously wasn’t wrong about Amazon as Trump plainly complained that they put 1000s of retailers out of business.

          • noonefromtampa

you said free markets in your post

“It’s called the free market, Don.”

          • Only Amazon would have the clout to get the USPS to start delivering on Sundays. I’ve wondered what kind of deal they cut, but I haven’t looked into it yet.

          • noonefromtampa

USPS works a lot of Sunday but not delivery
the USPS says they are making money on the deal

          • Note that I said “delivery”.

          • noonefromtampa

Yes they added delivery for Amazon which was a huge extra expense for them as they already had people working on Sunday

they charge Amazon the same rate as any other bulk package mailer

          • Josh RosenSquinns

So he really disagrees with using the laws to a business’s advantage? Really? Really???? Hello, Trump bankruptcies (not paying your creditors by taking advantage of the laws). I have never faulted Trump for taking advantage of the bankruptcy laws, but don’t be a hypocrite.

And Amazon doesn’t us the Post Office as their delivery boy. They use many methods. And, if the Postal System is giving them more favorable rates, isn’t that on the postal system and not Amazon?

Also, people’s buying habits, and the ever increasing workload on the family (and the reduced amount of free time) placing an emphasis on the convenience of online ordering, are putting those retail business out of business (and their failure to adapt quickly enough to the changing market place).

Generally, the whole comment is really kind of silly. I suspect much of his base like hearing it, but its not placing the responsibility on those that deserve. Amazon saw a business opportunity and took advantage.

    • they’ve put a lot of other retailers in business, I mean a lot of that stuff isn’t from Amazon

        • I was discussing the President’s tariff’s with someone the other day, and I mentioned that I wasn’t really sold on them because it seems to me to be inhibiting the free market, and his response was that the tariffs are just balancing the import tariffs by the other countries, and thereby a good thing.

I do not want to see any pulled hammy’s this preseason or in the first regular season games. Yes, poor preparation on the players’ parts but this was a trend for the last couple seasons and I’d like to think the strength and conditioning coaches have made avoiding these injuries a top priority. At least I hope they have because we lose multiple dudes early every year with these injuries that should not be occurring if the players are in top running condition.

  • Its a nice day . Gonna get outside and take advantage .

      • Josh RosenSquinns

Exactly. He’s gonna get $18-20mm per year, AND a team would have to give up high draft picks.

      • But buy the anti-government types logic. My wasting time is insuring that the government is less introusive on the day to day lives of americans.

  • Re: Shaq Griffin

As a situational speed rusher, that hand is not going to be as crucial. Dude posted 18.5 sacks in 2 years, so he can bring a guy down. But even so, the pressure of getting up and into the backfield, getting around the QB and flushing him out is the key. Disrupting the pocket. And by all accounts,he has the ability to do just that.

    • Keep in mind he’s an AAC guy, so the players he’s bringing down are not all 6’3 230 like QB’s in the NFL.

  • Shit JPP has one hand essentially and he is still effective.

  • Evidently Reed had off season “procedure ” on his toes and is still rehabbing . Won’t be available for OTA’s . Normally that would give me no cause for concern.

  • That round 5 Cravens pick, we should grab Shaqueem Griffin, if he’s there. I can see him being an ace special teams gunner, and a situational speed pass rusher.

And taking a guy with one hand who is committed to football would be a great little epilogue to the Suzy drama.

  • Expanding from my post last thread. Look at who’s available each round, whats the best top 3 you think we could come away with in such a situation?

Here’s the list of the top BPA@PON from what they gave me. I’m considering the big 3 PON’s DT,G,RB. But also wanted to add in WR later as taking a guy with pick 2 or 4 isn’t that crazy to me. BTW if like R. Smith, Edmunds or Fitzpatcrick were there in round 1, I’d have added them too, but they all got picked before 13.

    Round 1.
DT-Vita Vea, Maurice Hurst, Taven Bryan, Da’Ron Payne
    RB-Derrius Guice
    OG- Isaiah Wynn, Will Hernandez
    S- Ronnie Harrison

    Round 2.
    DT Harrison Phillips, Derrick Nnadi
RB- Rashaad Penny, Royce Freeman, Kerryon Johnson, Nick Chubb
    OG- Billy Price
WR – Calvin Ridley, Christian Kirck, James Washington, Deon Cain, DJ Chark

    Round 4.
DT- Tim Settle, RJ Mcintosh, Nate Shepherd
RB- John Jelly, Nyheim Hines, Bo Scarbrough
    G- Taylor Hearn, Wyatt Teller
WR- Keke Coutee, Equanimeous St Brown, Daesean Hamilton

Stop it! SKGS is real, and it’s a serious problem!
    ____________

What does SKGS stand for? Sorry Kirk’s Gone Suckit?

  • Jordan Thomas as a PFA, 6’6, 280, ran a 4.75.
He either makes it as a TE, or you have him gain 20 -30 pounds and become a T.

Recall Jason Peters if you will…similar

Question: Might this be a good time to re-sign Breeland for a team-friendly price while he languishes out there as a FA? I mean, the Skins medical peeps probably have known about his heel injury from day 1 and are okay with that while other teams seem to have been scared off.

  • I had to delete three comments from the prior post, and that was just what I saw near the top of the page. Hope was one. No personal insults. I don’t care if you thought it was just a joke. Other people lurking and reading don’t know that.
