Roster move: Redskins trade for Kevin Hogan

Well, this was unexpected news, wasn’t it? The Redskins announced today that they have traded with the Cleveland Browns for QB Kevin in exchange for a swap of 6th round picks. With this trade, the team picks up a much needed young qarterback. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first broke the news:

I love this move.  Hogan is a player I really thought had potential as a prospect. He is a local guy, played his high school ball at Gonzaga in D.C., and is also a Stanford kid, so he’s got the brains and has a pro-system background playing for Stanford coach David Shaw.

The Redskins desperately need young QB’s on the depth chart to develop. In the past few months I’ve stated that finding a young 3rd QB has been something the Redskins need to do for 2019 and beyond, someone for Gruden to develop. This trade potentially takes that need off the draft board and does it while still keeping the Redskins at 8 total picks in the draft.

In the pros Hogan has struggled, he was drafted by the Chiefs and released in 2016, then signed with the Browns.  Hogan’s numbers when starting for the dumpster fire known as Clevland were not great: 59% completion ratw, 621 yards, 4 TDs and 7 interceptions in 8 games over 2 seasons. One has to wonder how much of Hogan’s numbers are the result of his ability or whether the lack of talent on the team he was playing on. That remains to be seen.
