Redskins Draft Tackle Geron Christian in Round 3

The Redskins drafted Louisville offensive tackle Geron Christian with the 10th pick of the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft, 74th overall. Christian, a native of Ocala, Florida, who stands 6’5” and weighs 298 pounds, started 39 games for the Cardinals over three seasons. He was named as a 2016 All-ACC Third Team selection in 2016 and was an All-ACC Honorable mention in 2015 and 2017. At the NFL Combine, Christian bench pressed 225 pounds a total of 19 times and ran the 40 yard dash in 5.33 seconds. His arms were measured at 35 inches.
Christian was a basketball player in high school who possesses great length and athletic ability, along with good footwork and balance. He is also versatile, having played both left and right tackle at Louisville. Draft scouts report that Christian will need to improve his power and core strength, but has the potential to develop into a starter.
Christian joins an offensive tackle group that includes starters Trent Williams and Morgan Moses, along with swing tackle Ty Nsekhe. Redskins head coach Jay Gruden indicated tonight that the team plans on keeping Christian at tackle this season, with Nsekhe competing at guard “at some point” this season, so this pick does not appear to fill the team’s open need at left guard. Gruden identified last year’s injuries as a prime reason for the pick, stating, “what we went through at tackle last year was catastrophic with all the injuries and still a lot of these guys are recovering from their injuries. Trent [Williams] is recovering still, Morgan [Moses] is still recovering, Ty [Nsekhe] is still recovering, we have TJ [Clemmings] still recovering. So we need depth at tackle.”
Gruden had high praise for Christian’s abilities, providing that “[h]e’s a great, young tackle. He’s one of the best pass blocking tackles in this draft in my opinion. He plays left and right side and will provide ample depth for that position, a position that you can never have too many of.”
Christian spoke to the DC media tonight and stated that he was “excited about coming to Washington. The whole process was just busy….I talked to a lot of teams at the combine and had quite a few visits. I think I had seven visits, five workouts and had a whole lot of meetings, so really I had just had interaction with a lot of teams so I really didn’t have any idea where I would have been or when I would have gotten picked honestly.” He was asked about getting to play with All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams and right tackle Morgan Moses, and stated, “I’m very excited, ready to get there and just helping out a little.”
Christian is the first Louisville player drafted in in the third round franchise history, and, at the 74th pick, is the highest Washington has selected a Louisville player ever.

I understand your point about the trade, that’s fine. My values on players almost never match what’s on TV, and i’m fine with that. What the fuck is so great about following along to the script? Screams tool to me. On that note, Skins may have placed huge value on this Christian fella. Guice was a deal they handle him right, he’s gonna roll.
3rd round pick *seems* wonky, but I thought the same thing about the Nicholson pick last year and that worked out really well. Judgment reserved.
ESPN has him as 64th best player in the draft, 4th at his position, and they got him on the front end of a long run on OTs… they did miss the OG run and the DB run, so rather than really reaching on a player they got their swing tackle that has high developmental upside in the 3rd. zig to the zag.
The thing I don’t like is that they gave up a 5th round pick in the SF trade. The trade value in this draft has been really low. They dropped half a round in the 2nd and gave up a 5th for a mid 3rd round pick. it is too bad that their DBs were selected or I think they go DB there. Anyhoo, can’t really complain. This draft depends on whether or not Guice turns out to be the next L Phillips or if he at least is, minimum, Clinton Portis.
I have been very critical of our front office and I think they deserved it but I have to give credit where credit is due and I think they did an outstanding job so far. Kudos to our front office

ESPN Draftcast says he’s the best TE on the board and his NFL.com Combine breakdown says he’s got the skills to be a starting pass-catching TE in the NFL. Vernon is old; and Reed is injured, so I figure we need a next man up, esp in this Gruden offense.

My thing with Shultz is how well he blocks and understands the big picture. He can catch enough to get by, but really makes his bones through always doing the correct thing, and owning the blocking role.
Herndon’s kind of a Swiss army knife. Pretty good at everything but not great at anything.

Talent-wise he may be the best DT in the whole draft. Unfortunately we have no way of knowing how serious his heart condition is. Mayock said he talked to at least 10 teams that had him off their boards completely.
I could not care less about these “instant draft grades” following a teams’ selection but you cannot tell me Payne is not at least an “A” and Guice, given his being picked at #57, cannot be anything except an “A+”.
I am totally good with the Christian pick even though WIF already hates him. He’s going to be a player; probably sooner than later.

I’d be happier with TW at LG and Nooshkie at his natural position of LT so TW doesn’t get beaten up all year long and miss a quarter of the season.
Not sure he or the team would go for it but TW on the field at LG is a hell of a lot better than a banged-up TW at LT or on IR altogether.

Redskins radio analyst Chris Cooley said more than a week ago that the team’s ideal scenario was to land defensive tackle Da’Ron Payne and running back Derrius Guice. That was exactly what happened, when Guice surprisingly fell to the 57th pick in the draft. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Friday that Guice slid in part because of some poor visits with teams, who believed he was immature and high-maintenance. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero wrote about similar issues last week.
While Thursday and Friday were difficult days for Guice after being in the green room in Dallas on Thursday night, he landed in an ideal scenario. The Redskins have a solid offensive line, a clever play caller in Jay Gruden and no running back on the roster who can compare to Guice’s relentless Marshawn Lynch-like running style.
Cooley was obviously right.

Cooley offers insight into the team and the league that no one on local radio (or sometimes on TV) has offered us since probably the early days of Doc Walker when he was getting into radio/TV.
I agree but Ive seen many peeps around here get pissed when he says stuff they don’t like . Then he is some hack .
That said, Cooley says shit I don’t agree with once in a while. The only thing I don’t really ever like is when I tune in at 7am on the way into the office and the first 10 minutes of the show revolve around how hung-over Cooley is, or how tired he is, or how he was on the air having almost no sleep the night before; and he sounds like it. That shit happens at least once a week and it’s fucking annoying.
Cooley single-handedly made Niles Paul a living legend by sharing some of those stories of his renown badassedness. And Captain Chaos is still young enough in his retirement from football that players still know him and open up to him in a way they never would with a journalist. He had a well-known friendship with Kirk Cousins and yet could be as critical of his play as anyone out there.
To me, Cooley took a little bit of time to warm up to hosting a radio show but as a guy who used to like listening to the often acerbic but pretty smart Steve Czaban, at this point, ‘Czabe is dead to me. Cooley completely ended his career in the DC sports talk market.
Prior to the draft Cooley said he thought we could/should trade down to around 20 to get Payne.

The first 3 picks are all going to be good to great players for us. That said, this is the part of the draft where a team can really separate itself from the pack. Identifying and selecting those later round gems is what the team hasn’t had much success with in recent memory; at least consistently. This is the stretch in the draft where players can be found who can make significant contributions on O, D and ST’s and even work their way into the starting lineup.
I, like everyone else, like what I have seen thus far. But, starting today is where a team GM/personnel department makes their bones.
