Roster Moves: Redskins sign Williams, waive Kouandjio

The Redskins announced this afternoon that the team has signed guard Isaiah Williams and waived guard Arie Kouandjio with an injury designation.

Williams, who stands 6’3” and weighs 306 pounds, was previously with the Redskins’ practice squad for the 2016 season and spent the 2017 offseason with the franchise until he was waived in September, 2017.  A 2016 undrafted free agent out of Akron, Williams has also spent time with practice squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Indianapolis Colts, but has yet to appear in an NFL game.

The waiver of Kouandjio comes in conjunction with his surgery this week for a torn quad muscle, which would have likely kept him on injured reserve for the entire season.  Kouandjio, who was drafted by the Redskins in the 4th round of the 2015 NFL Draft, was previously waived prior to the start of the 2017 season but was re-signed by the team off the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad last season following a rash of injuries to the offensive line.

These moves are an acknowledgment that, with the team being thin on guards behind Pro Bowler Brandon Scherff, the team needs a player who will be able to actively compete for and contribute at the position.
