Martez Carter: Back of the Roster Gem or Camp Fodder?
May 30, 2018
by Steve Thomas
It’s not exactly brilliant insight to say that the Redskins running game was less than a net positive last season. The Redskins decided to do something about it and drafted LSU’s Derrius Guice in the second round. For some additional competition, in a less celebrated move, the team also brought in Grambling St.’s Martez Carter. Is it possible for Carter to break through and not only make the roster, but have an impact on the team? It may not be the most likely of results, but it’s not the craziest thought in the world, either. Carter has already overcome many challenges to get to this point and is an interesting player with potential. Let’s dig into him and see what we can find.
Background
Carter, who stands 5’7” and is listed by the Redskins as weighing 193 pounds, hails from Monroe, Louisiana, and is one of 11 children. His childhood was a struggle, and he had to deal with poverty and an older brother who was incarcerated. Carter overcame those challenges to become the first person in his immediate family to graduate from high school. From there, he enrolled in Wiley College in Marshall, Texas, on a basketball scholarship. He left Wiley after just one year and transferred to Mississippi Valley St., but without a scholarship was unable to afford tuition. Just prior to having to return home to Monroe, he was given an opportunity to walk on at Grambling as a corner. He permanently converted to running back and punt and kick returner one year later.
In 48 games for the Tigers, including the final 36 as a full-time running back, Carter produced 2,628 yards on 396 carries, for 6.6 yards per carry, and 29 touchdowns. The following is his year-by-year breakdown of his rushing attempts:
2014: 2 carries, 7 yards, 3.5 YPC, 0 TDs
2015: 111 carries, 876 yards, 7.9 YPC, 9 TDs
2016: 116 carries, 891 yards, 7.7 YPC, 10 TDs
2017: 167 carries, 854 yards, 5.1 YPC, 10 TDs
What you should note about these numbers is that his senior year, 2017, was a significant downturn for Carter – his yards per carry dropped from an outstanding 7.7 to 5.1. Grambling won the western division of the Southwestern Athletic conference in 2015, 2016, and 2017, so this isn’t a situation where a good player was being brought down by a bad team. It’s a concern that I’m sure the Redskins have already analyzed.
Carter was also a decent receiving threat at Grambling, gaining an additional 961 yards on 74 receptions for 9 touchdowns and 13.0 yards per reception. His year-by-year receiving breakdown is as follows:
2014: 1 rec, 2 yards, 2.0 yards/rec
2015: 12 rec, 134 yards, 11.2 yards/rec, 4 TDs
2016: 28 rec, 376 yards, 13.4 yards/rec, 3 TDs
2017: 33 rec, 449 yards, 13.6 yards/rec, 2 TDs
Carter also spent significant time as Grambling’s kick and punt returner, with a total of 26 punt returns for 253 yards and 92 kickoff returns for 2066 yards and 4 touchdowns. He averaged 24.1, 25.7, and 23.3 yards per kickoff return in 2014, 2015, and 2016, respectively; however, much like his rushing yards per carry, his yards per return took a steep drop in 2017, falling down to 13.9 yards on 17 returns.
Carter did not perform the physical tests at the NFL Combine, but did fully participate in Grambling’s pro day, running the 40 yard dash in 4.56 seconds, doing 14 bench press reps at 225 pounds, jumping 9’1” in the standing broad jump, and jumping 36 inches in the vertical leap test. His 40 time and broad jump are both mediocre, but his vertical leap is impressive. He also weighed 210 on that day, which is 17 pounds more than the weight at which the Redskins have him listed.
What does his film show?
I don’t have access to Carter’s All-22 film, but plenty of Grambling broadcasts are available to study, as are Carter’s highlight videos. All the same, this is an overview, not an exhaustive film study. This player should remind you of a slightly shorter and slower Chris Thompson (he ran 4.42 in the 40 during the pre-draft process). Carter earned the nickname “Mr. Excitement” at Grambling, with good reason. Carter has many positives and did a little bit of everything at Grambling – off tackle runs, sweeps to the edge, swing passes, and more. He has good agility and cutting ability. His mediocre 40 time is somewhat deceptive, as he appears faster on film and showed good burst, and demonstrated the ability to run away from defenders once into the second level. Given that he weighed at 210 at his pro day, it may be that he will be faster than that for the Redskins if he really is back down to 193 pounds. He is a patient runner who waits for his holes, sometimes to his detriment. Carter’s first instincts are to try and use his agility, via cuts, jukes, and spin moves to get extra yards. He occasionally demonstrates power, but is best in open space. He sees plenty of success in swing passes to the edge where he is away from the interior lineman; in fact, a number of his explosive plays came off the edge, either via pass or a run. However, Carter is also able to see open running lanes and follow his blockers through open lanes in the interior gaps. Carter’s “Mr. Excitement” moniker is well earned and was the result of his demonstrated home run ability. As an added bonus, while he wasn’t Grambling’s sole kick and punt returner, he did see good success at times in both roles and will most likely be in the mix at training camp to earn one of those spots.
On the negative side, Carter’s desire to wait for holes sometimes gets him in trouble and results in negative gains. He hesitates and tries to evade defenders instead of just hitting the available hole and taking a 3 or 4 yard gain. Many of his big plays that I observed came via massive running lanes created by the Grambling offensive line and not through opportunities he created on his own. Carter sometimes tries to extend plays to the edge while searching for a big gain and instead ended up stopped for no gain or a loss. He is not best served at 210 pounds – he is never going to be a pure power back in the NFL like Samaje Perine and doesn’t have the elite top-end speed, by NFL standards, to be able to take on additional weight and still maintain his effectiveness. It seems logical that the Redskins will require him to remain at around 193 as his playing weight, but at 5’7” at that weight, his comparably small size is a barrier to him becoming an every down back and may also prevent him from consistently getting to the edge against NFL-caliber defenses. He played against a lower level of talent in the Southwestern Athletic Conference and I suspect that some of his big plays and ability was because he was athletically superior at that level of competition. It isn’t a given that his rushing style is going to translate well to the NFL since his available objective measurables show that he probably won’t have the same athletic superiority in the league. There is not a 20 yard shuttle time available for him, so we don’t have an objective statistic related to his burst and acceleration. Carter may be a player who has to rely on speed and acceleration to succeed but doesn’t have enough of either at the NFL level. Finally, I don’t have his fumble rate data available, but in the film I watched, Carter put two balls on the ground, one of which resulted in a turnover, so at a minimum that’s an issue worth watching.
What role could he play for the Redskins?
The Redskins are going to keep a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 4 running backs on the active roster. Thompson and rookie Derrius Guice are locks, so Carter is competing for one or two spots at most. Most certainly, the Redskins’ 2016 4th round draft pick Samaje Perine and third year player Rob Kelley have the inside track at the third spot, so Carter has a tough road ahead of him. Plus, he has additional strong competition in Kapri Bibbs, Byron Marshall, and Keith Marshall, as well as fellow undrafted free agent fullback Elijah Wellman. It’s also possible that if the team keeps a fourth running back on the roster, it will be the fullback. So the odds are stacked against Carter.
However, Carter had strong success with swing passes and screens at Grambling, which is a skill that head coach Jay Gruden loves. That role is currently being filled by Chris Thompson, but Thompson’s contract expires in 2019 and comes with a large cap hit both this year and next ($3.1M and $4M, respectively). It could be that the team is thinking and hoping that Carter will show enough to become Thompson’s cheaper replacement, particularly if he is also able to contribute on special teams in the meantime (Alex Zeese also mentioned Carter’s special teams potential in his recent special teams column – read it here). That might not be likely or wise, but it’s possible and probably represents the best case scenario for Carter.
A more realistic path may be a stint of a year or two on the team’s practice squad while he waits for his opportunity, which if the team’s recent losing battle against injuries is any guide, he’ll get one way or the other.

there is a whole series of hilarious, terrible, “instructions” on chinese products.
And blueprints. I know all about this.
Over Memorial Day weekend the one of the PR family seemed like they were trying to match the neighborhood zeal with the flags.
They were flying a big ole Puerto Rican flag and some small ones too.
Now, I, personally, do not see a problem with that. Whatever. You love where you are from, there’s nostalgia, pride of heritage, all that going on. I’m cool with it. No harm, no foul.
BUT…. you are not doing any favors to relations between Puerto Ricans and Muricans. I mean, it’s more than a little tone deaf when you consider how it will be viewed by others. But just like Kap and the Knee Pad Gang, they don’t think how it will affect the views of others. And thereby, they worsen the very “race” relations they are complaining should be better. Irony? Yep.
Not sure how it’s any different than flying a state flag.
Sure. Or a Metallica or Steelers or Virginia Tech flag. Whatever.
But you think the neighborhood Muricans think that way?
I’m just saying, you want everyone to get along, you have to also consider other people’s perspective.
Perspective considered… now raise them PR colors
If you meant that, any of it, you’d not use the term “muricans”. I personally don’t take issue with it, as we created Puerto Rico, as it is today. Now if it were a house full of Young Lords, well, that’s a different issue, in regards to the United States flag, and our fallen soldiers.
I do mean it.
And I do also see how my use of that word is wrong. I guess, I just mean folks who are “old school” when it comes to values and symbols and traditions and so on.
I blame the Ambien. 🙂
And PS. I consider myself old school when it comes to values, traditions, symbols and so on.
But… I’ve had so much exposure to minority culture that I don’t get offended by stuff like kneeling or waving a home territory flag on a whole country holiday. I’ve just seen how differently other groups view those symbols, and traditions.
Values and traditions, sure, symbols……you either do, or you don’t.

“History” teacher here shows CNN to the kids every single day.
I walked past his class on my way to the copy room and heard a student say, “Why does this administration HATE Puerto Rico so much?”
And that’s just one example of the gloriously unbiased education in “History” (aka current events) they are getting.
Our own fault.
It’s true… when you let the teachers instill values and take a pass on it at home that’s what you get.
That’s why I have great respect for people who homeschool and do it right.
I know there’s nutjobs and lazy parents, etc. But if you take that responsibility seriously and do it right, that’s awesome.
It’s a broken system, though, no accountability. On the flip, if you send your kids to Christian School, you have to vet the curriculum for “flat Earth” stuff.
I don’t know about other states, but in PA there’s a fair number of hoops to jump through.
But ultimately, it comes down to the parents. And you either do a good job or a bad job.
As far as accountability goes, the state schools, at least PA, only pay bureaucratic homage to “accountablility” too.
Lastly, as far as Christian schools go, you have to go with a Catholic school if you don’t want “young, flat Earth” and Adam & Even on dinosaurs. Catholics realize that faith and reason are interdependent, not mutually exclusive.
And we wonder aloud, why other countries’ kids outpace us…..
Yup, at least three generations worth….
Could just as easily be Alex teaching that class…..
The Federale is approaching $4 billion in contract work alone in PR
Not counting Federal FTE and other costs
That money, however, won’t come close to covering the destruction suffered by Puerto Rico, according to its governor, Ricardo Rosselló. In November, he estimated the U.S. territory would need $94.4 billion to recover from both hurricanes.
PR wasn’t worth $95B before the hurricanes
Because they refuse to learn to speak Amuricun
This should really piss people off… children being indoctrinated. That’s not what we pay taxes for, that’s not what we send our kids to school for. Teach the kids actual facts… leave the brainwashing to the parents.
that is the US Educational system today from elementary school thru to college
That’s why you gotta be involved with your kids and don’t expect teachers to do it your way. Make sure you challenge all the BS they get their heads filled with by certain teachers.
You mean facts like Christopher Columbus, how we sat and broke bread with Natives, how every modern day invention was created by some Anglo? It’s all BS

it will be interesting to see if all the hype Cousins gets now, he can live up to
Its very hard, you know. Lots of different factors can prevent me from winning. For instance, the other team may have a good defense. Or, I may be asked to make tough passes when receivers aren’t wide the bleep open. You know, these are just a few things that could prevent me from living up to expectations.

Kirk will be fine in Minny… he’s not a guy that can put a team on his back and carry them over the finish line. Luckily for him he landed on a team that was only 2 games from World Champs… he simply has to make a couple of plays here and there… which he is capable of.
The attorney for former 49ers Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid is hinting that a witness in their collusion case can come forward with concrete evidence of a conspiracy to keep them out of the league for kneeling during the national anthem.

“I would stay tuned because this case is about to take a dramatic turn,” he said.

Gotta admit, Cousins had a weird go in DC.
I mean, beyond the Shanny/RG drama.
First, he was known as the Human Interception Machine. Then as soon as he fixed that problem, Gruden was like, “Come on, man… Throw the damn 50/50 ball!”

Cousins on working in the redzone:
“That’s why we’re doing it. It’s not easy,” Cousins said. “It is condensed. You have to be on the screws. Your throws have to be that much more accurate. The routes have to be that much more perfect in terms of the depth, the cut and the timing. That’s why we’re practicing it right now. . . .
“Each play helps build a confidence. Helps build a rapport with the receivers, with the tight ends. Try to get on the same page with the centers, protection calls. It is a lot of new, a lot of chemistry that still has to be built.”

Maybe you misunderstand, idk
It had that whisker of altitude.
Any higher and it hits him in the glove.
It wasn’t going in.
Idiot should have kept it on the ice….
The whisker of altitude is determined at the wrist. You don’t understand, that’s crystal clear, now. As per usual. He’s lucky dude kept it out of the three hole.
*eye-roll*
Great save
It wasn’t going in
Not on that shot, no. Dude hits the three hole, goal. That’s a fact. You don’t know what you’re talking about.
Holtby read the shot
Now…come on man
There’s no argument here
Holtby stretched out. No way he’d have been able to raise his stick. Have you ever played goaltender?
Here’s one where Holtby thought he was going 1 hole…..you make a decision, you live or die by it.

henceforth: “the save”
3 on 5 for a minute and a half, sent them bitches home without a goal. That’s where Holtby shined brightest, IMO. I don’t know what we’d do without that, and Oshie.
30 sec 4 on 5 – 1 minute 30 sec 3 on 5 – 30 sec 4 on 5. No Vegas goal.
I’m no hockey expert, but I do think there is an unusually high amount of “luck” involved. Like how the puck deflects and goes in the net at a crazy angle that no human could ever stop. Like the Hotlby save…not that he didn’t get there in time but the fact that if the puck had just 1 degree more loft its a goal….like why didn’t the offensive player go high? Brain Fart on his end.
You gotta get the shot off. Deflections are a often on purpose. These guys are supremely accurate.

if the caps win the series, that will be known in caps’ lore as “the save”.
i thought for sure they had scored. was readying for another intermission, overtime, etc… then i noticed there was no horn, no crazy cheering. felt like a second chance because i assumed they’d scored.
Really, to be truthful about it, it was pure luck. Just a whisker of altitude on that shot, well, it’s going in.
glad I wasn’t the one to say it
I mean, he got there, credit that, but a better shot makes it a lot harder
Shooter knew it too, just like we did. Little bit of wrist…
OTOH, if you know a goalie is quick, or you’re not up to the bright lights, you rush that shot.
The important thing is that the Caps have the strategy to beat Vegas, and now they know it. They gotta keep working, though, it’s not easy to keep that pace and physicality going. TJ Oshie is a pleasure to watch.
no doubt. were i tuch, i would have elevated it…. i’m sure he tried. probably some micro-second, micro-inch of a wobble in the puck’s position… didn’t “settle down” nicely or what-the-heck-ever. the guy only had 95% of the net wide open….
That comes automatic, or it doesn’t (no knock on him) sometimes you do it, sometimes you don’t. If our Capitals could at least take the shot, I’d be happy. More than one lost opportunity in front of the Vegas net.
Nice to see the Caps even the series.

Washington Redskins on ESPN – John Keim
1 hr ·
A few quick observations from Wednesday’s OTA session
:
1. I wrote about this for Thursday on ESPN.com, but it’s clear that Alex Smith is testing his receivers to see what they can do – and how much he can trust them. I mentioned this last week and it continued during the open session. I can’t say it was just Smith as backup Colt McCoy and even Kevin Hogan made some throws to partially-covered receivers, but mostly on fades. Smith has done it on multiple routes.
2. The other thing that continues to stand out is that Smith won’t tuck and run in seven-on-seven work. But that’s because it’s a passing drill, though that didn’t stop others. The only time I saw him run was in 11-on-11 work when in a two-minute situation and he ran out of bounds. Get what you can and that’s part of his game. Doing it in seven-on-seven is not helpful to anyone. And the more guys get used to reacting to when he scrambles, the better. We saw it pay off a couple times, one in particular when he extended a play and eventually hit Josh Doctson in the back of the end zone. Keep in mind, there’s no rush so that helps. But it’s also what Smith can do. I don’t know what Smith will eventually do during the season and maybe he’ll be just OK. But it’s an offense that does get receivers open and once Smith feels comfortable in all aspects, his anticipation skills will help – as will giving his targets a chance.
3. Accurately judging linemen is difficult until the pads come on, but the Redskins should feel good about what Jonathan Allen has shown. The guy looks quick. It’s not like I’m watching him every play, but the few times I have he always seems to do something good in the pass game. There was his quick penetration off a stunt while aligned over the left guard. He pressured the quarterback. On the next snap, he lined up over the right tackle, then shot inside and drove the center back.
4. I don’t know all that Zach Brown is doing away from Redskins Park as he continues to miss OTAs. And you always have to keep in mind that these are voluntary workouts. Guys miss. Come the fall if they make plays nobody remembers. It does provide Josh Harvey-Clemons a chance to get work (he’s been lining up next to Mason Foster). There are some players who miss time and coaches aren’t overly bothered because of their knowledge and experience in the playbook. Brown is not at that level in Washington.
5. I don’t know how many running backs Washington will keep, but it’s clear the coaches like Rob Kelley as he continues to work as the first back (Derrius Guice is taking reps with the starters too). Again, Guice was drafted for a reason. So for Kelley he’ll have to show he can help in other ways – like on special teams. With the new kickoff coverage alignment, they’ll need more smaller, faster players for this unit.
6. Don’t know how rookie corner Greg Stroman will do, but he has been physical with receivers off the line. Saw that a couple times. He and receiver Robert Davis got tangled up in the red zone. Stroman was grabbing Davis’ arm at the end, but the DB group loudly claimed Davis had pushed off earlier. Call it a wash.
7. The Redskins need tight end Jeremy Sprinkle to develop. His blocking will be a big part of that and I haven’t paid close attention to that aspect just yet. Watched him on a couple routes; got jammed by Harvey-Clemons, prompting Smith to throw elsewhere. Another time Smith read a slot corner blitz and threw to Sprinkle running a crosser vs. Mason Foster to the vacated area; Sprinkle wasn’t looking for the ball. Take it for what it’s worth: Two plays that I happened to see. Sprinkle’s size will help, but he’s still learning.
8. A funny line from defensive lineman Ziggy Hood as coordinator Greg Manusky ran past: “Age is just a number!” Hood, of course, is 31 and the Redskins have a young line. They needed his experience and savviness last season. The Redskins have turned their line around in part because they’ve drafted young players who like to work: Allen, Matt Ioannidis, Daron Payne. Allen always talks about what Hood meant to him after he was drafted. I don’t know Hood’s future here; there will be a tough decision to make along the line. But Hood still has value.
9. One thing to watch this summer and this season: Corner Orlando Scandrick’s impact because of his ability to communicate. He and D.J. Swearinger were going back and forth on several plays –as they should. If Scandrick helps improve the communication in the secondary that would be key. He has to still be able to play (he’ll be in the slot if he doesn’t start), but there have been too many plays allowed due to poor communication. It takes more than one or two people, too.
Thanks. Good notes.
So… all these guys have the same beard… can’t tell one from another
The Caps seem to get stronger as the games go on
I LOVE how these guys aren’t buds on the ice… the NFL and NBA could take some pointers from these guys… HATE the guy on the other team.

https://kogo.iheart.com/content/2018-05-29-no-anthem-no-problem-softball-crowd-sings-star-spangled-banner/?cmd=managed_social
saw that . Posted it too .
Event coordinator, Bob Kayajanian, of the Central Section told the Fresno Bee that not playing the anthem was a mistake on his part.
“The national protocol is the first game of the session you have the national anthem,” he said. “The games after that are just played. We got caught (off-guard). Both the teams turned to face the field and they all started singing the national anthem. They started to play some music and the people took that as the national anthem and they all started singing, which I think is obviously a wonderful thing to show off their patriotism.
“We try to follow with what normally gets done. It’s all a learning experience for everyone and (going forward) we’re playing the national anthem at every game.”
Keep this pace up, don’t let them shut you down with that chippy shit.

I think a coach is as good as his talent. The Redskins, for example, had not made a true comittment to the D-line before 2 years ago. In short, Gruden has some pieces to compete.
his biggest blunders in my opinion were Haslett and Barry . Not good.
Those were certainly blunders
I’d agree that he hasn’t had the talent to go far in the playoffs. You’ve gotta have some kind of D if you’re going to make it past the first game.
Jay Gruden has not shown well as a HC in the win-loss column…slow starts, questionable in-game management, but he’s been the best coach since Schottenheimer in my opinion. Players don’t quit on him. I hope I’m wrong but he could very well be the coach that brings us back to prominence, but can’t lead us to the promised land.
He’s also endured the RG3 fiasco , an insurmountable no of injuries , SM debacle, and whatever else I am forgetting .
The KC saga
Endured, as in it all happened to him and he had nothing to do with it?

More widespread voter fraud. Trump lost NH by over 2,700 votes, but said he would have won if there hadn’t been so many illegal votes….
NH did a thorough investigation and this is what they found:
— In New Hampshire, out of 86,952 people who registered to vote on state primary or general election day in 2016, a total 6,033 did not present photo IDs and as a result signed affidavits swearing that a New Hampshire community was their domicile.
— The secretary of state’s office verified that all but 458 cases were legitimate New Hampshire voters, and referred those 458 cases to the attorney general’s office. The attorney general’s office was able to verify that 392 of those voters were in fact domiciled in New Hampshire and registered and voted properly.
— The attorney general’s office was unable to verify the domiciles of the remaining 66 after exhausting all investigative resources, but a top attorney in the office said it does not mean an unlawful vote was cast in any of those 66 cases.

Also A Tennessee sheriff’s deputy was killed Wednesday and a manhunt was on for the gunman, officials said.
An off-duty San Antonio Police Office was shot six times after a road rage incident turned into a shootout in the parking lot of a gentleman’s sports club on Tuesday, according to the city’s police chief.
San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said at a news conference the off-duty officer and a 25-year-old driver pulled into the parking lot of the Allstars Gentleman’s Sportsclub off Interstate 10 after the motorist accused the officer of cutting him off. The driver then pulled out a gun and started shooting, hitting the officer six times in the lower-torso.
“Altercations and arguments on the roadway happen all the time, so that doesn’t surprise me, unfortunately it does happen enough, too often,” he said.
McManus said the officer retreated back to his car to grab his weapon and returned fire, striking the 25-year-old at least twice. A woman who was sitting in the driver’s car was also grazed in the head by gunfire.

AHAHAHAAA!
“Did Roseanne Barr Just Cost John Goodman a Chance at an Emmy?” — News headline
Um. Nope. ABC and the knee-jerk reactionalism of the Twitverse did.
I love the sympathy, though. Oh, poor John Goodman. His Emmy lost forever because of that monster who made his career.
(Full disclosure: I have always disliked Roseanne, her humor, her show, her voice, the whole grody vibe she puts off.)
when the show was on originally she was a darling of the left
because she stood up for women’s rights
how times have changed
her show showed the struggles of working class families across America
like Raymond Carver stories, but with a heaping helping of snark and crassness to make it “funny”
I know that’s something people say, but is there really that much profundity in it? I’ve genuinely never heard someone talk about Roseanne as if its some transformational media.
I thought Rosanne was mainly just a trashy sitcom. I thought this new version was pretty entertaining. Profound comedic insight, it’s not.
Most working class people I know, did not like it.
That was always my understanding of it. It seemed like something well-to-do people would watch to get a sense of the other half, with plenty of comedic relief of course.
I feel like the success during the first show was all about women’s rights, ect.
I guess, for the life of me, I can’t figure out why people would attempt to read so much into a sitcom.
Well, market research people make their living doing that kind of thing. I don’t have a horse in that race…….mine’s resting for Belmont.
Is the show funny? Are people watching it?
Market research done… BOOM!
For future shows, what they may like, less overhead, hit the ball out the first swing, on and on, on and on…..
Expecting a 30 minute sitcom to be some profound commentary on society as a whole is kind of a joke to begin with.
She is still a feminist. Or she calls herself that. Tweets about the patriarchy enough to give you a headache. Newsflash, that’s where her activism ends. It was always like that. Nothing’s changed.
“Conservatives and liberals alike should applaud the cancellation of a stupid show helmed by a stupid comedian. Seems like we’re really amplifying this story.” – Colorado Slim
I think it’s pretty funny that every leftie with a social media account is crowing about the cancellation of Rosanne because they think it somehow hurts the conservative cause, apparently, whereas conservatives were never enthralled with her or her trashy takes on life. The bigger issue is the hypocrisy of what can be said by public figures, not Rosanne herself. Disney hired Keith Olberman to ESPN last week despite of all his lunatic-fringe, curse-filled ranting on twitter and elsewhere but days later fires Rosanne from ABC for one single tweet – a bad, racist one, but a single tweet.
MSNBC has racist tweeter Joy Reid to talk about bad Barr’s tweet were
hello pot/kettle…
It’s seems to me that no one disrespects the anthem more than Roseanne. Have you heard her rendition? It was treasonous.
Conservatives and liberals alike should applaud the cancellation of a stupid show helmed by a stupid comedian. Seems like we’re really amplifying this story.
Maybe it wasnt about liberals and conservatives so much as it was about saying someone was the bastard child of the Muslim Brotherhood and planet of the apes. Olbermann never said that.
No, Olbermann just called the President of the United States a MFing nazi. That’s much better.
That private company still hired him and that’s their prerogative, just like its ABC’s to fire Roseanne. Clearly Disney and ESPN don’t think Keith calling Trump a Nazi is going to make for much backlash, probably because everyone else does it. I mean, if conservatives are being unfairly shunned from the private sector because of public opinion, what’s the solution? Should the government step in?
No, absolutely not. Certainly Disney can hire Keith Olberman if it wants to, and I can just turn the channel – which I’ll definitely do. But everyone does not call the president that name, just a small crazed subset, and it isn’t in ESPN’s best interests as a sports network to continually get political, continually let their left-leaning analysts like Jamele Hill and others and now Olberman to get away with stuff like that, to continually take one-sided slants on things like the anthem protests. People already think ESPN is getting way too political, and bringing in Olberman is only going to make it worse, because he’s not going to be able to keep his mouth shut. I think it’s one of the reasons ESPN’s ratings are getting worse.
We all just need to remember that these companies are not making political decisions, they’re making money decisions. If they didn’t think Keith Olbermann would bring in more people then he’d turn away, they wouldn’t hire him. It has nothing to do with his politics. No business is in the business of bad business. No business says, “yeah, you know what, let’s make less money and piss everyone off!” It doesn’t happen that way.
Obviously
I think ESPN’s management is aware of their downturn in ratings and has been trying to shake things up for awhile, but I also think that the political leanings of management – at least the former CEO – makes them a bit blind to the problem. If ESPN was smart, they’d stay away from all things political and become a sports oasis from politics.
Maybe so, which would only mean that they made a bad decision, not that the decision wasn’t based on turning a profit. At the end of every trail, in business, is money, IMO.
Eh, you say obvious but I get the sense people really think politics rules the boardroom and shadowy “libruls” guide business decisions without regard to economics.
For most companies it doesn’t… but if you don’t think stations like MSNBC (or NBC in general), CNN and FOX aren’t ruled by politics then I don’t know what to say to you. CNN and MSNBC have been tanking for years but have doubled down on their biased format. That isn’t a money decision…
I’m saying the decision to cancel Roseanne was probably more related to the fact people weren’t going to watch it now that she flew off the handle. Money.
They gave her the show knowing what her politics were. They produced the first episode which was all about Roseanne as a trump supporter. Politics didn’t matter then. It mattered when she inspired hatred and likely a boycott of the show. Just money, that’s all that changed.
Not sure politics has anything to do with her racism… but that show WAS their money show.
But racism in any form should NEVER be rewarded… and thus ABC did the right thing… even if it MIGHT hurt their bottom line. Of course… keeping Roseanne might have hurt their bottom line just as easily… hard to tell how much of a boycott would actually happen if they kept the show on.
This, obviously, is incorrect.
Substance sold separately.
I think the notion is that an entire cast and crew of people lost their jobs because the court of public opinion on Twitter decided that a comedian known for crassness and rudeness crossed a line with a late night attempt at humor.
If that doesn’t seem at least worthy of discussion, it’s a curious commentary on where we’ve come as a culture.
You can’t make fun of someone’s race. This is very straightforward. It would have been incredibly easy to NOT be racist, but she didn’t choose that path.
Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences, right? Your rights stop at the private sector as “righties” so gleefully remind us. Well, she got fired by a private company. Companies are beholden to public opinion. That’s literally how this works. You can’t cry foul that the company wants to stay in business and the public’s good graces. That’s just capitalism.
A low income hoe, no doubt…..
Tell me about it – NFL
“hoe”… giggle, giggle
What race did she make fun of?
Oh, she definitely made a racist joke, and she deserves the consequences for that. Freedom isn’t free. You can’t compare someone who identifies as African-American to an ape. That’s common sense. My point in response to the original post is that there’s a pretty hypocritical response when the various public figures say dumb things.
Tim Burton, Helena Bonham Carter……. I’m thinking this was the reference her peanut sized brain was searching for.
LOL!
Much better.
I don’t disagree with you about the capitalism part. Though, as I said yesterday, it would have been more honorable for ABC to take a stand and say, “While we condemn, etc, and we don’t condone, etc, and we this that and the other, we are not going to fire an huge cast and crew over one bad joke by a comedian known for bad/offensive/crass jokes.”
But the larger issue I would point out is how shrill and insensitive we are as a society. We don’t care what happens to other people’s real lives, as long as we get our vicarious sense of self-righteous justice over some not nice words!
I get it, but that’s the free market. It is what it is. No one gets guaranteed work. And I’m confident that the employees of a major network sitcom will find work again.
Except DJ…….. he’s done
There’s no rocket science in the free market part…
Except for the folks who can’t understand why Kap can’t get an NFL job.
The irony of everybody being so exulted in the witch hunt over “niceness” but not caring one whit about the poor suckers who are scrambling to line up work, is a little interesting to me.
I will agree with you that there is a lot of hypocrisy involved in all of it too. On both sides.
Donald J. Trump Verified account @realDonaldTrump
Bob Iger of ABC called Valerie Jarrett to let her know that “ABC does not tolerate comments like those” made by Roseanne Barr. Gee, he never called President Donald J. Trump to apologize for the HORRIBLE statements made and said about me on ABC. Maybe I just didn’t get the call?

Chris Thompson on Trey Quinn:

Will be! Mr. Very Relevant
Excellent! Let’s go ahead and give the dude a nickname too! Bring the end about quickly. Why dally?
dally dally
Isn’t Mr. Irrelevant his nickname? Or is it Mr. Relevant?
Mr. Irrelevant is his honorary title as the last player picked
It’s was the Ambien that made me do it — Roseanne’s latest excuse
Come on, kids, say it with me. Drinking and drugs and Twitter do not mix.
don’t buy drugs, kids
become a rock star and they give you them for free
Hypocrisy of the network’s decision is what I find far more interesting than Rosanne, her tweet, or the loss of her show.
ABC cancelled the show and put over 200 people out of work because one person was an idiot
I know the “star” is Roseanne but kill her off and see if everyone else can make it work
I may not like Gilbert’s politics but I think she is a good enough actress to carry the show with Goodman
They’d have to change the name of the show, but sure, it’d be worth a shot. I don’t know who owns the show, but if it’s not ABC, I bet some other network picks it up as is, though, considering the ratings were so high.
Just write an episode where Roseanne goes to the zoo, gets mauled by an ape, and carry on with the show. Still won’t watch it.
That would be funny… how do you get her to do that or… where do you find a suitable stand in?
Rosie O’Donnell
I’d love to see Rosie O’Donnell get mauled by an ape
She’s a hateful human being.
It would have to happen off-camera, I’d think.
killed by a Muslim extremist .
“It’s definitely discouraging because I definitely thought we were moving to a place where players obviously wanted a platform and we could create something that was maybe more effective and bigger,” Jenkins said. [Regarding, you guessed it, the anthem.]
———————————————
Wow. These guys are incredibly dumb. (Not that the league has been smart.)
You are professional athletes. Replicas of your jersey are worth large sums of cash. People care what you say on Twitter.
You want a platform? You already have it. You just want an easy, lazy platform. Drop to a knee during a two minute song, and presto change-o you are Jesse Freaking Owens, Social Justice Warrior extraordinaire.
If you want to really enact some change, do something. Pissing off half the country isn’t helping. How hard is that?
Well said.
Somebody needs to ask Malcolm Jenkins why it is that NBA players aren’t sniveling like babies about not having the right to disrespect the flag during the national anthem played at NBA games.
Fuckin’ with the autopilot, eh?……….
“Life under Bill Belichick sucks, former Patriots defensive end Cassius Marsh told the San Francisco Chronicle in a recent interview.
The former Patriot, who was claimed off waivers by the 49ers last season, says he “hated” playing in New England.
“They don’t have fun there,” said Marsh. “There’s nothing fun about it. There’s nothing happy about it. I didn’t enjoy any of my time there, you know what I’m saying? It made me for the first time in my life think about not playing football because I hated it that much.”
Marsh said he was unhappy with the way that Belichick used him, asking that he cover receivers instead of rushing the passer. Eventually, he said, he confronted the notoriously grumpy head coach. “I basically without asking to get cut, I kind of asked to get cut.… I had confidence that I would have an opportunity elsewhere and I would take advantage of it,” he said.”

all that winning, poor guy. happy losing!

I read the entire article, why do we have a fullback on the damn roster?
— Jay Gruden
Blame Doug Williams, Jay.
I think that Rob Kelley is definitively a better RB than Perine, in basically every way.
I think so too, but to be fair to them I’d like to see them both behind a healthy o-line.
That’s possible, but I think Perine will show up Kelly in camp.
who’s rob kelley? i do kinda like that guy #20, whoever he is. he’s pretty good, sadly got injured, but he was doing ok.
WHY3 SCamp • 23 minutes ago
I think Fat Rob is gone. He doesn’t offer anything that the younger guys could probably do.
—————
I’d say he’s on the bubble or close to it, but I think he has a legit shot of sticking around. Why? Because when he was healthy in 2016 he was better than Perine was last year. Now he has apparently trimmed down and gotten in better shape. Of course Perine was running behind a broke-ass o-line, and the fact that he was a 4th round pick will give him extra points.
Let’s see how they all do during TC and preseason. I think either Fat Rob or Bibbs will wind up on the PS. Bibbs has the advantage of being able to back up CT as the 3rd down back, but Guice probably has the ability to be a 3-down back so that’s less important this year than it’s been in previous seasons.
Kelley on the practice squad? I don’t think he would last long – would get signed by another team pretty quickly, I’d think.
Fat Rob isn’t practice squad eligible…
Yes he is, actually, under the new rules from 2 seasons ago. He only has 2 years of accrued service.
So what rule is that? Seems like a bit of a stretch to put guys on practice squad with 2 full years under their belt.
The way i read it , he played in less than nine games last year so that makes him eligible
https://www.google.com/search?q=nfl+practice+squad+eligibility&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS795US795&oq=nfl+&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j35i39j69i60l3j0.4891j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
accrued season is 6 or more games on 53 man roster
They changed the rules to allow I believe 4 players with 2 accrued years of service to be on the practice squad.
Second, each club will be permitted to sign a maximum of two Practice Squad players who have earned no more than two accrued seasons of free agency credit.
Ah, two, not 4. Regardless, he’s eligible.
No you’re right changed again in 2017
Each team can keep 10 players on its practice squad.
Up to four of those 10 players can have two accrued NFL seasons. So, was a player on the 53-man roster for at least six games of two NFL seasons? Sorry, they’re out of luck.
It used to be that three weeks of an NFL season spent on a practice squad counted as one full season of practice squad eligibility. Now, that number has been increased to six weeks, which expands some players’ eligibility.
A player can spend no more than three seasons on any practice squad.
That’s what I thought, somewhere in the back of my head. Of course, I think Kelley would last about 5 minutes on the practice squad before some other team signed him.
What’s all this football talk doing here? Sheesh.
I could write another national anthem column if you want.
I don’t think I could stand that. 🙂
I think I have at least one more rant in me.
Let it go
You first
Probably should save that one for a rainy day.
Nice article. I’m voting fodder. But if he flashes in the return game during the preseason, he could take Kelley’s spot.
That’s the thing, right there. I’d be a significant amount of money that one of Stroman, Quinn, or Carter is going to become the kick and punt returner.
Jay went out on a limb too many times to put faith in Crowder again. Dude just went all Knobloch and became a fumbler. It really was a shame, because Crowder is a fan fave in my household.
Crowder had a run of about 6 games in two years where he was outstanding at kickoffs. But he went from medicore to one of the worst in the league at it the remaining time. He needs to be replaced, in my opinion.
Jay isn’t going to just fire Crowder in front of the media at draft time, but there’s a reason the Redskins have acquired all of these collegiate returners.
Right. Jay really does an outstanding job with the media, imo. He defends his guys when necessary. And he also knows when guys need their reins pulled. Plus, he is just a funny, likeable dude.
I think Jay was as shocked as anybody when Crowder started and continued fumbling. Who’d have guessed. The dude was so reliable and promising his first two years.
But even without the fumbles, aside from that one stretch of games last season, he’s just not a very good returner. At least I don’t think so.
…but don’t call it “whining”. it’s “ranting”. much tougher-sounding.
Here’s what I wrote. I’d say it’s far from whining: http://www.thehogsty.com/2017/09/24/dear-nfl-please-put-a-stop-to-the-anthem-protests/
one man’s whining is another man’s ranting.
Your crew are all whiners…
simple as that
I write a long column carefully spelling out my views, and he calls it whining because he doesn’t agree with it. Did you even read it?
All that clown does is whine. Rarely if ever talks actual football. Complete butt hurt cry baby… 24-7.
Adds zero to the blog
Worthless in life and in blog
yes. and, one man’s rant is another man’s whine.
keep them ALL in the locker room, or just don’t play the anthem. america will survive the playing, or not playing, of the anthem at football games.
you say “whiners” because the comments are negative about things that apparently don’t bother you. you don’t even notice your own whining. funny/not funny.
I think what Austin would prefer is something that he can respond all in shrill end of the worldery
I don’t think the team will keep both Perine and Kelley this year. One of those two will be gone, I’d bet.
Fat Rob is a good blocker , that may keep him around .
Guice CTHOMP and Perine are locks
They ain’t cutting a second year player who rushed for over 600 yards
One spot up for grabs
It would be short-sighted to cut Perine after 1 season.
He wasn’t terrible last year.
Fat Rob will get that spot on seniority alone
I think Fat Rob is gone. He doesn’t offer anything that the younger guys could probably do.
Then who takes his spot?
FWIW he started the offseason as the starter
I never said that Carter would grab a spot this year, to be fair.
3.1 and 4 mill for Thompson are fair figures if he can stay healthy. He is contributor. I like that he leaves it all on the field…no fear.
Numbers slipped in 2017…an extra thing to keep in mind.
Yes, as I mentioned in the piece. Makes you wonder what happened, but it would’ve taken me watching all of his games to figure it out, which I wasn’t going to do.
makes me wonder if the line lost a power blocker or something like that
Possibly, but in the games I watched, that line sometimes blew huge holes for him.
He carried the ball a lot more too, might have just been tired. who knows?
Even if you had watched all his games, you may not have been able to draw a conclusion… Way too many variables.
Certainly true, particularly without the All-22 film. You can really see alot watching All-22 even as an amateur if you do enough of it.
https://youtu.be/skuOAGgSTz0
Carter looked way too bulky on the Grambling pro day footage. I hope he really is back dwon to 193.
Camp fodder. Too many somewhat rounded guys ahead of him. I’m hoping perine will emerge as a consistent contributor.
Perine will have a good year.
So glad you guys took the time to actually read the column before concluding he’s camp fodder……
Although, yes, he’s probably PS bound at best.
Didn’t need to read it to come to that conclusion…
…but you knew that
I do think he could possibly become Chris Thompson’s replacement in two years if things go well for him, though.
That would be something
Camp fodder
Fodder
Practice Squad guy at best… we always seem to have a PS RB
Forst
