As first reported by ESPN’s Josina Anderson, running back Adrian Peterson is returning to the Redskins on a 2 year deal worth up to $8M plus incentives:

ESPN’s John Keim later confirmed Anderson’s report.
Peterson came to the Redskins last year during training camp after prized rookie Derrius Guice went down for the season with a torn ACL. Peterson instantly became the feature back and took full advantage of the situation, posting one of the best seasons in NFL history for a running back aged 33 or over, remarkably staying healthy all year and gaining 1,042 yards on 251 carries, for an average of 4.2 yards per carry, and 7 touchdowns. He also added an additional 208 yards and 1 touchdown on 29 receptions.
With Guice seemingly close to returning from his injury to full strength, the question for the Redskins heading into the season will be the distribution of carries, as Peterson has never been a backup in his career. The Redskins could have elected to delay a running back signing to let the free agent market settle in order to acquire a younger back, but with the good experience by both the team and Peterson last year, this signing makes sense. Certainly, at a minimum, Guice should benefit from having a future Hall of Famer in the running backs room to serve as a willing mentor.
