Redskins name Terry Bateman as Exec VP & Chief Marketing Officer

The Washington Redskins announced today that Terry Bateman has been named as the team’s Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.
Bateman is a long-time business associate of team owner Dan Snyder. According to a 2006 Washington Business Journal[1] article, Bateman served as the president of Snyder Communications marketing services division in the 1990s before being hired by the Redskins in 2006 to run “marketing, internet and broadcast media, and overall business strategy”, and remained with the franchise at least through 2018. The 2018 Redskins yearbook listed him as “Executive Vice President”. It is unclear whether Bateman left the team for a year in the wake of the firing of former president of business operations Brian Lafemina in late 2018, or whether Bateman has continuously remained with the team since 2006.
Either way, Bateman will take over the franchise’s efforts to re-brand itself in wake of the recent decision to retire the Redskins nickname upon conclusion of a review period. According to the team, he will also once oversee all of the team’s “marketing activities, sponsor relations, internet and broadcast media operations and overall business strategy”, which is nearly same job description provided by The Washington Business Journal in 2006.
This announcement is significant because it should free new head coach Ron Rivera to focus solely on the football team and not get bogged down by business and name change issues.
