As the cut down from 80 to 53 gets underway this Saturday the first one out the door in Washington was a name almost no one expected.
This morning it was reported on social media that Adrian Peterson was being released by the team. This was first tweeted out by Tom Pelissero of NFL Network. It’s since been confirmed by JP Finley and John Kiem.
A surprise: The Washington Football Team is releasing legendary RB Adrian Peterson, sources tell me and @MikeGarafolo.

Can confirm Washington cut Adrian Peterson. Pretty shocking news, though he did miss practice on Thursday. Clearly the team likes Antonio Gibson, a lot.

Key in this: the staff LOVES versatility with the RBs. Others have more for them. Also: there is a belief that Love can get ‘it’ back in a few months. Also has versatility. Still surprising. In talks leading into camp, didn’t seem on the radar at all.

Though this release is unexpected, it’s not unusual for coaches to release a veteran of Peterson’s caliber early so that they have a chance to sign with another team. We will update as information becomes available.
