Game Summary
First Quarter
It was another slow start for the Washington Football Team (WFT). Backed up after a hold by Cam Sims on the opening kickoff the WFT offense went three and out, giving the Cardinals a short field. Despite 2 penalties the Cardinals drove down to score a touchdown on a pass from Kyler Murray to DeAndre Hopkins on a blown coverage involving Landon Collins. WFT responded with a 5 play drive that resulted in a punt. After a great tackle by Sims on the punt return, Collins intercepted a Murray pass on third down. Unfortunately, WFT turned the ball back over three plays later on a strip sack by Jordan Phillips. The WFT defense was able to force another Cardinals 3 and out, but Steven Sim Jr. fumbled the punt return, giving the Cardinals a short field. The Cardinals then executed a 6 play, 40-yard drive with Murray running in to score the touchdown.
Score: Cardinals 14, WFT 0
Second Quarter
After another 3 and out by WFT, the Cardinals produced a 5 play, 61 yard drive which ended in a 49-yard field goal by Zane Gonzalez. The key play on this drive was a 54 yard completion to Andy Isabella. The WFT showed some sparks on offense, having an 11 play drive; however, that drive only netted 35 yards. It ended with a 7 yard sack against Dwayne Haskins by Haason Reddick. The Cardinals responded to that with a 10 play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 33 yard field goal by Gonzalez. The key on this drive was a 49 yard completion to Christian Kirk. WFT then had a 6 play, 29-yard drive that ended in another punt. The most important thing on that drive was Brandon Scherff being helped off the field with a right knee injury.
Score: Cardinals 20, WFT 0
Third Quarter
The WFT defense held the Cardinals to a 3 and out to start the second half. WFT then had a short 5 play, 29-yard drive with an 18-yard completion to Terry McLaurin. After the Tress Way punt, the Cardinals had a bizarre 7 play, 14 yard drive that included a 4th down conversion, but then disintegrated with intentional grounding and delay of game penalties. After the Cardinals punt, WFT had their best drive of the game up to that point. The 10 play, 61 yard drive ended in a Dustin Hopkins field goal after an untimely holding penalty at the Cardinals 3 yard line on a 2 and goal running play. The key part of the drive were four consecutive plays of 10 or more yards: a 3rd down, 15 yard reception by Sims Jr., a 13 yard run by J.D. McKissic, a 10 yard reception by Logan Thomas, and an 11 yard run by McKissic. However, the defensive was unable to hold the Cardinals on their next drive, allowing a 12 play, 80 yard drive that was capped by a 21 yard touchdown scramble by Murray.
Score: Cardinals 27, WFT 3
Fourth Quarter
WFT responded to the Cardinals touchdown by scoring their first of the game. Haskins led the offense on a 5 play, 62-yard scoring drive that ended with a 24 yard touchdown catch and run by McLaurin. McLaurin also had two other catches on that drive for 10 and 26 yards. The 2 point conversion was unsuccessful. The WFT defense then held the Cardinals to a 5 play, 15 yard drive that ended in a punt. WFT then went on a 9 play, 69 yard drive with Antonio Gibson scoring his first NFL career touchdown. The big play was 30-yard completion to Sims Jr. on 3 down and 1. Again, the 2 point conversion was unsuccessful. The Cardinals then drove 79 yards in 11 plays and got a 28 yard Gonzalez field goal to seal the game.
