Game Summary

First Quarter

The Washington Football Team started on offense after Cincinnati won the coin toss and deferred. Although they did get a first down on the first play on a nice catch and run by Antonio Gibson, the offense came up short on a third and two, forcing a punt by Tress Way. After Way pinned the Bengals at their own 10 yard line, they drove 75 yards in 14 plays, mainly on short passes to Tyler Boyd. Cincinnati kicker Randy Bullock missed a 34 yard field goal, hitting the right upright. WFT then marched right down the field to score a 1 yard touchdown by Gibson. The key plays on Washington’s scoring drive were a 14 yard catch and run by J.D. McKissic, a 42 yard pass to Terry McLaurin on a nice throw by Alex Smith and a 2 yard “QB” sneak by tight end Logan Thomas in a bit of trick play.

Score: WFT 7, Bengals 0

Second Quarter

In a drive that started in the first quarter, the Bengals drove 67 yards in 10 plays; then, craziness ensued. On 4th and goal, Joe Burrow scrambled, trying to score, but Chase Young forced a fumble. Kamren Curl attempted to pick up the ball and return; however, he was hit and Troy Apke recovered in the end zone.  As a result, the call on the field was a safety. There was a Bengals holding call on the play. So, Ron Rivera’s original choice was to either givd the Bengals two points or the ball back for a field goal attempt. Since all turnovers are reviewed, the safety call was overturned and ruled a touchback. WFT then went 3 and out, punting 55 yards. The Bengals then drove 53 yards in 8 plays for a 5 yard touchdown pass to A. J. Green. Bullock missed the extra point attempt. The drive was aided by a facemask penalty by Daron Payne on a Burrow sack. Another big play on the drive was a 25 yard pass completion which was enabled by a blatant offensive hold that was not called. WFT responded to the touchdown with a 3 and out series. The Bengals had another nice drive of 9 plays for 41 yards before the defense held, forcing a 53 yard field goal by Bullock. Key plays were a 15 yard completion to Giovani Bernard and a 11 yard completion to Boyd. On the next series, Smith drove the Washington offense to midfield when a tipped by Marcus Hunt led to an interception by Jessie Bates III. Burrow moved the Bengals 9 yards where they attempted a 58 yard field goal as timed expired. Bullock again missed, hitting the right upright.

Score: Bengals 9, WFT 7

Third Quarter

The Bengals started on offense in the second half, but both teams posted 3 and out drives with their first series. Then, the disaster struck the Bengals, when Burrow was hit on a third down play near the goal line and carted off the field with a serious leg injury. This seemed to deflate the Bengals, because after the punt, Washington drove down the field and scored a touchdown by Steve Sims Jr. on a 3 yard completion. Key plays on that drive included 19 yard and 16 yard runs by Gibson and a 14 yard completion to McLaurin. Ryan Finley took over at quarterback for the Bengals on the next series, but was sacked by Ryan Kerrigan on third down to force a punt. WFT went on a 6 play, 28 yard to score a 32 yard field goal by Dustin Hopkins. Key plays were a 25 yard completion to McLaurin and a 21 yard defensive pass interference call against LeShaun Sims on Isaiah Wright. On the next Bengals possession, they converted a 3rd and 18 with a 19 yard scramble by Finley, but were then forced to punt.

Score: WFT 17, Bengals 9

Fourth Quarter

Washington went on a 14 play, 80 yard drive that stalled thanks to a clipping penalty on David Sharpe. Hopkins converted his 50 yard field attempt to add to Washington’s lead. The big plays on the drive were a 16 yard run by Gibson and 21 combined offensive yards by McKissic. The next Bengals drive was a 3 and out featuring a sack by Tim Settle on 3rd down. Washington had a short drive of 25 yards and then punted to the Bengals 10 yard line. The Bengals gained 9 yards but Washington forced a turnover on downs after a sack on third down by Jimmy Moreland and James Smith-Williams. Washington was unable to run the ball on their next drive and Hopkins missed a 38 yard field goal attempt wide right. Washington continued their pressure on Finley forcing an interception by Fabian Moreau. WFT then ran out the clock.
