This news was reported by various outlets earlier this week, so it does not come as a surprise. Smith concludes his Washington career with a total of 18 games played, with 16 starts, an 11 – 5 win loss record as a starter, 373 completions in 580 attempts for 3,762 yards, 6.5 yards per attempt, 16 touchdowns, 13 interceptions, and an 82.6 quarterback rating. Smith’s severe leg injury suffered against the Houston Texans in 2018 eventually spurred him to one of the most memorable and unexpected comebacks in modern sports history and earned him the 2020 Comeback Player of the Year Award. With his release, Washington saves more than $14M on the 2021 salary cap.
Washington is now left with 2020 mid-season signee Taylor Heinicke as the only quarterback currently on the roster.
