Pre-training Camp Roster Update
July 29, 2021
by Steve Thomas
Washington made a significant number of roster moves this week in conjunction with the start of training camp. Here’s the summary:
First, the team signed defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to a 4 year extension. We covered this move earlier this week (click here to read). Specific details of the contract are not available yet, so I can’t provide any insight into the impact of this extension on the salary cap, except to say that Allen’s cap hit will remain $10.051M in 2021.
Second, the Redskins Washington signed tight end Logan Thomas to a 3 year, $24M extension that will keep him with the team through 2024. Again, contract details are not available. Thomas’ cap hit in 2021 be $3.61M.
The team reportedly signed defensive end Olubunmi Rotimi from Old Dominion, although there has not been an official announcement of this signing by the team.
Tackle Cornelius Lucas was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He will eventually revert back to the active roster; however, the length of time it will take to come back will depend on his vaccination and health status. If he is unvaccinated, he will remain on the COVID-19 list for at least 10 days.
Wide receiver Curtis Samuel and corner Greg Stroman both were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform List. Samuel’s injury is reportedly to his groin.
Defensive tackle Devaroe Lawrence was placed on the Non-Football Injury list, although details regarding his injury are not available.
Safety Deshazor Everett and defensive tackle Tim Settle were both placed on the Non-Football Illness list. No information as to the specific nature of their respective illnesses were not made known, although presumably neither is related to COVID-19.
Tight end Tyrone Swoops and guard Najee Toran did not report to camp and were placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list.
Finally, defensive end Jalen Jelks was waived with an injury designation, which means that he will revert to Washington’s injured reserve if his contract is not picked up by another team. Tight end Deon Yelder was waived outright.
As a result, Washington currently has 81 players on the regular roster, plus David Bada, who is still in the International Pathway Program. Our roster page is available here and our salary cap page is available here.
