Hold On – Week 11

November 24, 2021

By Noonefromtampa

Washington getting two wins in a row to double the team’s win total for the season is the good news. Taylor Heinicke played well for a second straight game, but that doesn’t mean it was a flawless game overall.

The Washington Football Team had eight penalty calls this week, which up five calls from in the prior game against Tampa. The league average for the season is 6.34 calls per team in a game.  In week 11, the average was 5.96 calls per team in a game. Washington continued the trend of being under the league average for the season (5.8 calls average versus the 6.34 calls league-wide) but were over the weekly average (8 versus 5.96).

League Wide Numbers

The Carolina Panthers maintains the dubious spot of being the most penalized team with 81 calls, Cleveland is second with 80 calls and Dallas is in third place with 77 calls. Washington is tied with San Francisco and Baltimore at 24th place with 58 total calls.

Dallas offensive lineman Conner Williams  leads the league with 10 accepted calls, and Raiders offensive lineman Alex Leatherwood is right behind him with 9 calls. William Jackson III leads Washington with 6 calls, tying him for 15th place league-wide.

Trends and Impacts

False starts have creeped back into the penalty mix for Washington. This is somewhat expected with so many offensive line changes – at one point Keith Ismael was subbing at center for Wes Schweitzer who was in for an injured Tyler Larsen, who had replaced the injured Chase Roullier.

Washington had three major 15 yard penalties, with Cole Holcomb, Daron Payne and Kamren Curl each picking up one. Payne’s call was a pure mental mistake where he hit the pile late and got flagged for it. The calls on Holcomb and Curl could be considered bad technique on the tackle by the player.

Both teams gave up way too much easy yards on penalties, but there were no critical penalties that impacted the direction of the game.
