Free Agency Preview 2023 – Wide Reciever
March 10, 2023
By Alex Zeese
Let’s start with some straight talk, this could be the least exciting position group to break down in free agency, Wide Receivers. I say that because as we all know, this is probably the most well-stocked position group on the offensive side of the ball, with McLaurin, Samuel, and Dotson already settled in as the top 3 guys; plus, Dyami Brown already has a history with Howell going back to their years in college together. Washington already made one move in this group signing Marcus Kemp, the 27-year-old free agent from Kansas City. Kemp has been off and on the practice squad for the chiefs his whole career, the 6’4″ wideout only has 4 career catches for 42 yards.
Honestly, this group already looks to be more or less set.
Players under contract:
Curtis Samuel
Terry McLaurin
Jahan Dotson
Dyami Brown
Alex Erickson
Dax Milne
Kyric McCowan … who?
Pending free agent:
As there’s an absurd number of free agents at the wide receiver position, it would be insane to go and look at all of them. Instead I’m guessing they will look for a guy who could replace Cam Sims role on the offense, Kemp could already be here for that role. If there’s one thing that Washington is lacking right now it’s a good big man at wide out, all of the top guys on the roster are on the shorter side, 6’0 or less, and the tallest on the team the last few years Cam Sims, is a free agent. If there’s one thing that this team may need it’s a new big man. I decided to create a list of guys who are 6’3” and up.
Pending Free Agents with some size
Allen Lazard– Green Bay Packers, 6’5, 60 catches 788 yards 6 TD
Mack Hollins– Las Vegas Raiders, 6’4, 57 catches 690 yards 4 TD
Juwan Johnson– New Orleans Saints, 6’4, 42 catches 508 yards 7 TD
Jauan Jennings– San Francisco 49ers, 6’3, 35 catches 416 yards 1 TD
D.J. Chark- Detroit Lions, 6’4, 30 catches 502 yards 3 TD
Julio Jones– Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 6’3, 23 catches 299 yards 2 TD
Antoine Wesley– Arizona Cardinals, 6’4, 19 catches 208 yards 3 TD
Justin Watson– Kansas City Chiefs, 6’3, 15 catches 315 yards 2 TD
Cam Sims- Washington Commanders, 6’5, 8 catches 89 yards 0 TD
N’Keal Harry- Chicago Bears, 6’4, 7 catches 116 yards 1 TD
Jake Kumerow– Buffalo Bills, 6’4, 4 catches 64 yards, 0 TD
Cody Hollister– Tennessee Titans, 6’4, 3 catches 54 yards 0 TD
Miles Boykin– Pittsburgh Steelers, 6’4, 2 catches 11 yards 0 TD
Other WR Free Agents of note:
Nelson Agholor Patriots
Stearling Shepard, Giants
Randal Cobb, Parckers
Marvin Jones, Jaguars
Jamison Crowder, Bills
Sammy Watkins, Ravens
Jakobi Meyers, Patriots
JuJu Smith-Schuster, Chiefs
Jarvis Landry, Saints
TY Hilton, Cowboys
Given that Washington is already committing to over 31 million on WR’s for the 2023 season, it’s a fair assumption that they won’t be making any big offers in free agency. But don’t be surprised if the team tries to bring back Cam Sims, or makes a play at Justin Watson who’s been with Bieniemy in Kansas City. At the very least they need more pass catchers for training camp.
