Thoughts

The good news was that penalties were down compared to last week. The not so good news was that five of the six penalties gave the Eagles an automatic first down. It started on the first Eagles possession when Noah Igbinoghene was called for defensive holding, so instead of settling for a field goal, the drive was extended and Saquon Barkley scored a touchdown three plays later, a net +4 for the Eagles.

Marshon Lattimore was called for three defensive pass interference penalties in the game. This one was baffling since it looked like offensive pass interference instead on A.J. Brown, who was holding onto Lattimore:

Washington is now in second place for most DPIs call this season with 16, one behind the Lions and Jets who both have 17 calls. For contrast, they are in 23rd place for false starts, for which they also have 16, and 29th place for offensive holding. Counting the two field goals in the second half on drives extended by penalties, that makes the net point differential +10 for the Commanders gaffes.

To be fair, some of the calls against both teams were off throughout the game.  Eagles safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was disqualified from the game, which had a huge impact on the Eagles defense, which had a huge impact on the Eagles defense. Both calls which led to unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and the automatic disqualification happened after plays were over and not shown live during the telecast. What viewers did see was Dyami Brown knocking Gardner-Johnson’s helmet off and not being penalized.

The Oscar goes to…. Sam Cosmi for this effort in drawing an unnecessary roughness penalty on Jalen Carter:

Lastly, Cornelius Lucas got the Kansas City Chief offensive line benefit Sunday, when he moved a little early on the game winning touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder:
