Washington started the game on offense. In the first series, the big play was a 22 yard completion from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Terry McLaurin. Antonio Gibson had a huge hole on first and 10 but only picked up 6 yards as Sam Cosmi failed to pick up the backside block on the Patriot linebacker. Washington failed to convert on 3 & 2, with Peyton Barber only picking up one yard, forcing a punt.

On the first defensive series, Washington limited the Cam Newton-led Patriot’s offense to 2 yards. Chase Young thought he had a strip sack on third down, but the referees ruled Newton’s arm was in forward motion so it was an incomplete pass.

In the second offensive series, the big play was a nice 24 yard back shoulder throw by Fitzpatrick to Logan Thomas. The offense was able to move the ball about 20 more yards up field before being forced into a field goal attempt. Dustin Hopkins missed the attempt when he hooked ball around the left goal post.

That was it for the starters on offense.

On the second defensive series, the starters did not look as sharp as they did in the first series. They gave up 64 yards on 9 plays, leading to a New England field goal.

Taylor Heinicke came in at quarterback in Washington’s third offensive series. He went 2/3 for 18 yards in that series with completions to Gibson and rookie Dyami Brown.

On the third defensive series, with the starters out of the game, Washington gave up 46 yards on 10 plays to New England’s second stringers, which led to New England’s second field goal of the night.

On the next offensive series, Washington’s offense went on an 11 play, 40 yard drive before punting. Heinicke was able to extend one play and make a nice 19 yard completion to rookie tight end John Bates.

On the next defensive series, New England had a short 4 play, 25 yard drive which was marred by several penalties.

Washington’s best offensive series of the game came next. Rookie running back Jaret Patterson earned 20 yards rushing and an 11 yard reception. Steve Sims had 18 yard reception and Brown has a 9 yard reception. This led to a 1 yard touchdown run by Barber, giving Washington a 7-6 lead at halftime.

The third quarter was not very good for Washington. New England started off with a 13 play, 53 yard drive for a field goal to take a 9-7 lead.

Steven Montez came in and started with a 3 and out, with a sack on third down.

The Patriots also had a 3 and out, but Dax Milne had a 19 yard punt return for Washington. On the next series, Patterson had a 12 yard run and a 10 yard reception. This led to a 50 yard field goal attempt which Hopkins also missed.

Patriots quarterback Mac Jones, possibly inspired by Montez, had 2 incompletions and was sacked by David Bada.

On the next series, Montez threw an interception which was returned 36 yards. The Patriots were able to drive the remaining 24 yards for a touchdown to take a 15-7 lead.

The teams traded inconsequential series, and then Montez lead the team on a clutch 15 play, 95 yard drive with time counting down in the fourth quarter. Montez was able to extend plays with his feet, including a 14 yard scramble. He also completed passes to Milne for 11 yards and 21 yards to Sammie Reyes. After the Reyes completion, Montez threw another 9 straight completions, including a 4 yard touchdown to Lamar Miller, making the score 15-13.

Washington elected to go for a 2-point conversion and Montez threw a nicely timed pass to Antonio Gandy-Golden who appeared to catch the ball to tie the game. However, upon review the catch was overturned, leaving the score 15-13.

On the next series, with Washington needing a stop or turnover, they allowed Rhamondre Stevenson, a 4th round draft pick from Oklahoma, to run 91 yards for a touchdown, for the final score of 22-13.

Jaret Patterson performed well in the game, so let the Cult of Jaret begin!
