Rivera’s biggest frustration comes down to the little details
The Washington Football Team fell to the Los Angeles Chargers 20-16 to kick off their 2021 campaign. There were some bright moments for Washington, but not many. The Chargers came into FedEx Field and made a statement on their opening drives, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Head coach Ron Rivera spoke after the game and detailed several issues contributing to the loss versus the Chargers. However, Rivera’s biggest frustration came from the little details.
“Little details. And again, the ugly head of not doing your job, not doing your responsibility I should say. You’re responsible for something and you got to do it no matter what. You got to trust that the other guys are doing their jobs. We look at some of the things on the tablets and you can see we’ve got guys not where there supposed to be defensively. As far as the offense is concerned, it’s really just blocks. It’s the missed assignments there. We’ll get a better look at it tomorrow as coaches – or actually tonight to be honest with you – we’ll look at it then and we’ll get that taken care of. There’s really not much we can do because, again, we play on Thursday so this will really be a brief thing for us to explain things to the players and get ready to play the Giants.” – Rivera on his biggest frustration of the game.
The key takeaway from the quote that Rivera gave here was his players not trusting their teammates to do their jobs, as it appears that stood out to him as the game went along. Among trust, players were trying to do too much, which always becomes more harmful than positive.
“I think guys trying to do things, do more than they’re supposed to. We have a little saying, we need 11 guys trying to do one thing at a time, not one guy try and do 11 things. That’s probably some of the disappointment because when you watch some of the things, we had some things called specifically for certain things to happen and if we have two guys in one area, that’s somebody not doing their job.” – On what Rivera attributes guys being out of position to.
Washington has a lot to correct in just a short amount of time, as Washington faces the New York Giants on Thursday night at FedEx Field.
