First Quarter

Kansas City won the toss and elected to defer, so Washington started the game on offense. Washington went three and out with two Taylor Heinicke incompletions to Dyami Brown and Terry McLaurin and a short run by Antonio Gibson. Tress Way’s punt went out of bounds at the Chiefs 5 yard line.

Washington’s defense was unable to take advantage of the field position, giving up a touchdown to Kansas City. Patrick Mahomes completed multiple passes, including a 20 yard catch by Travis Kelce, 19 yard completion to Tyreek Hill and 27 yard catch Joe Fortson over Landon Collins. Darrell Williams ran it in from the 2 yard line for the touchdown. Defensively, Kendall Fuller dropped a gift interception when the receiver fell down. Washington also gave up 5 yards to Williams on an inside run on fourth and one.

On Washington’s next drive, they used a mixture of Gibson runs with completions to JD McKissic and Brown to move the ball 46 yards in twelve plays. The drive stalled out but Dustin Hopkins converted a 50 yard field goal attempt.

As has been the pattern this season, Washington’s defense continued to fail to contain an opponent’s offense, this time giving up a 49 yard completion Mecole Hardman over William Jackson III, who fell down trying to knock the ball away. Luckily Bobby McCain had a good angle and pushed Hardman out of bounds at the Washington 20 yard line.

Kansas City 7, Washington 3.

Second Quarter

After picking up 11 yards on three plays, Mahomes threw the ball to Hill who tipped the ball to Fuller for an interception at the 9 yard line, preventing another Chiefs score.

Gibson was re-injured his shin on the next play after rushing for three yards. Ricky Seals-Jones caught a short pass but Heinicke arm was hit on third down forcing an incompletion. Tress Way punted 58 yards and made a possible touchdown saving tackle on Hardman’s 29 yard return.

The Chiefs were only able to pick up 7 yards on a third and ten after two incompletions which led to a 52 yard field goal by Harrison Butker. The big play on the next Washington drive was a 22 yard completion to John Bates and a subsequent unnecessary roughness call on a helmet-to-helmet hit during the tackle. This led to a 43 yard field goal by Hopkins.

Washington’s defense was able to hold Kansas City to 26 yards on 6 plays on the next series, forcing the first Chiefs punt of the day.  After a 15 yard run by Gibson, he fumbled on the next play, which was recovered by the Chiefs. Two plays later, Mecole Hardman fumbled, which was recovered by Kamren Curl.

Washington was able to overcome a dubious offensive pass interference call on McLaurin with J.D. McKissic picking up 16 yards on screen pass on third down. After the two minute warning, McKissic had a 7 yard run and the Heinicke hit a wide-open Seals-Jones for a 39 yard touchdown to give Washington their first lead of the game. The 8 play, 77 yard drive was the best offensive series in the game for Washington to that point.

After a penalty on the kickoff, the Chiefs were backed up to their own 7 yard line. Mahomes went on a tear, hitting Byron Pringle for a 27 yard completion and Kelce for 19 yard, 17 yard and 14 yard completions. However, on third and one running play, Mahomes fumbled the snap and then attempted to throw a pass which was intercepted by McCain. Washington ran out the clock to end the half.

Third Quarter

After giving up first downs on two straight completions, Washington exploited a holding penalty on a first down run. Chase Young sacked Mahomes for a 7 yard loss. On 3 and 23 after an incompletion, the Washington defense only allowed a 5 yard completion. The good fortune continued when Tommy Townsend only kicked a 19 yard punt off the side of his foot.

Behind a 10 yard run by McKissic and 14 yard catch by Seals-Jones, Washington was able to the move the ball 32 yards in 7 plays before the drive stalled. Hopkins missed the 42 yard field goal attempt.

The Chiefs were able to move the ball 63 yards in 10 plays for a two yard touchdown pass to Hill. Hill also had catches of 9, 12 and 13 yards on the drive. Washington responded to that score with a three and out on their next possession series. Hardman then returned Tress Way‘s punt 25 yards.  Washington then added 15 yards to the return courtesy ofa 15 yard penalty on Way for a low block.

Starting at the Washington 45 yard line, the Chiefs quickly moved the ball down to the Washington 22 yard behind the running of Williams and Mahomes passing.

Fourth Quarter

An 11 yard pass to Kelce and a defensive holding penalty on Khaleke Hudson brought the Kansas City down to Washington’s 3 yard line. Williams scored on a short run from there. Washington was able to pick up a first down on the next series with a 12 yard completion to Dyami Brown; however the drive stalled after that, forcing another Way punt. That drive picked up 27 yards on 7 plays.

Kansas City got the ball back on their own 4 yard line after the punt with 10:32 on the clock. The Chiefs offense was able to convert five straight 3rd downs into first downs, including a 21 yard completion to Pringle and a 24 yard touchdown to Demarcus Robinson over Jackson. The Chiefs also took 7:18 off the play clock.

On the next series, Heinicke threw a bizarre interception where Tershawn Wharton trapped the pass against Cornelius Lucas’s helmet and then took control of the ball. The Chiefs then ran most of the time off the clock with Washington executing one last running play to end the game.
