2023 Road to the Draft – Part 15

April 24, 2023

By Noonefromtampa

The sale of the Washington franchise appears to be moving along, albeit slowly. The Josh Harris bid has had a satisfactory preliminary review from the NFL Finance committee. The fan base is waiting for the announcement of a finalized sales contract before celebrations begin in earnest.

The next big thing in the NFL offseason starts Thursday night with the NFL Draft. The draft has come a long way in my lifetime. When I was young, you found out who your team’s picks were by reading the newspaper the day after the draft. Nowadays, the pick is leaked on Twitter before it can be announced on television. The first NFL Draft that was televised was in 1980 by a startup sports network called ESPN, which was scrounging for content. ESPN added Mel Kiper to the telecast in 1984 and the draft portion of the offseason has been growing in popularity ever since. Disney, the current parent of ESPN, will bring in around $16 million in ad revenue for the Thursday night first round and could hit near $24 million for the entire three-day event.

Let’s Talk About Who is Good at Mocks

TheHuddleReport.com keeps track of how accurate first round mock drafts are for various media personnel with a five-year running average. The top 10 leaders are:

  1. Matthew Jones, Draft Examiner – 43.8
  2. Brendon Donahue, Sharp Football Analysis – 43.8
  3. Evan Silva, Establish the Run – 43.4 (1x Champion)
  4. Eddie Brown, San Diego Union-Tribune – 43.2
  5. Ryan McCrystal, Draft Ace – 43.0
  6. Jason Boris, Times News – 43.0
  7. Josh Norris, Underdog Fantasy – 43.0 (1x Champion)
  8. Ben Standig, The Athletic – 42.6 (3x Champion)
  9. Xavier Cromartie, College Football Metrics – 42.6
  10. Forrest N Long, The Huddle Report – 42.2 (2x Champion)

Most of our readers will recognize Ben Standig who covers the Commanders for The Athletic.

Let’s look at who they are picking for the Commanders:

Person Pick
Matthew Jones Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State
Brendon Donahue Will Levis, QB, Kentucky
Evan Silva Anthony Richardson, QB, Florida
Eddie Brown Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State
Ryan McCrystal Darnell Wright, OT, Tennessee
Jason Boris Publishes 24 hours or less before draft
Josh Norris Deonte Banks, CB, Maryland
Ben Standig O’Cyrus Torrence, IOL, Florida
Xavier Cromartie Christian Gonzalez, CB, Oregon
Forrest N Long Joey Porter Jr., CB, Penn State

As you can see, even the “experts” don’t agree on which player is most likely the draft choice.
