Progression of younger talent at running back did not work out; search for Alfred Morris replacement continues

When the Redskins drafted 2015 third-round pick Matt Jones, comparisons to Marshawn Lynch were planted in the heads of fans by former General Manager Scot McCloughan. Fans took the bait presented to them, but in the end, Washington whiffed on the selection as Jones struggled to take over at the position as he was expected to. The decision by Washington to move on from Alfred Morris after the 2015 season was mainly due to the fact that Jones was supposed to progress to the point where he would be able to be effective in both the pass and run game for the offense. During the same 2016 season, undrafted rookie free agent Robert Kelley had an opportunity as the starting running back after Matt Jones proved he was incapable of protecting the football. Kelley had a solid rookie season, but faltered this past season, ultimately missing the second-half of the season due to injury. Other notable running backs like Chris Thompson, Samaje Perine, Kapri Bibbs, Byron Marshall, and even Mack Brown to a degree has had their turn to make a difference at the position, but injuries and average play prevented them from being more than just a guy for Washington.
Of course, Chris Thompson was one of the best weapons in the NFL this season for Washington, but if the team is looking for him to be a primary workhorse, he is not that. Alfred Morris, who is now with Dallas, is not the missing piece that Washington has been looking for these past two seasons since he left. However, his first two seasons in the NFL with Washington is what the Redskins are severely missing right now in a running back. Even in his last two seasons with Washington, where he was not as effective, he was still somewhat productive, something the Redskins have struggled to find in a running back since that time. There is no telling what the current Redskins running backs are capable of in the upcoming season and beyond, but there are undoubtedly plenty of top-tier running backs that will be available via free agency and draft this forthcoming offseason. This position will be high-priority for Washington, or at least it should be, which is an offense that relies too heavily on the aerial attack.

oh my god…. we just finished season 7 of game of thrones last night. we plowed right through that show. omg. as it was ending, my wife said, “this is the best show ever”. cracked me up. and, it probably is the best drama show i’ve watched.
the ending kind of snuck up on me because there were 10 episodes to every season, except the last. when it ended, i was thinking there are 3 more episodes…. but no. damn, that’s an incredible show.

I get it, but there are just way too many moving parts. I think tagging him is a huge mistake. They need to make their best offer quickly, tell him that there’s a time limit, and if he rejects, let him walk, take the comp pick, and get on with finding a new #1 QB. Cousins is a good QB, but neither he nor the difference between a 3rd round comp pick and either a 1st or 2nd is worth dragging this situation out for months. To me, at least. The Redskins should not turn this into a soap opera for a third straight offseason.
And I still don’t think Cleveland is going to trade for him, regardless.

Yes, I do. It was allegedly a three year deal, but that deal included the already signed franchise deal, so it was really a 2 year extension; plus, the guarantees were low. To me, the Redskins needed to offer him a lowball 5 year deal to get negotiations started. IMO, a 3 year deal was an absolute nonstarter and why they didn’t respond. To me, it was the equivalent of walking out of the room for effect during a mediation.

I disagree with Steve about damn near everything, but I completely respect the amount of time and effort he puts into researching his positions on Redskins financial moves. I can’t think of anyone I would rather turn to if I needed to understand how a contract or an offer was broken down.
This idea that “Kirk’s team refused to ever listen to anything from Day 1” idea is bullshit. Even if the intent all along was to force the Skins to franchise tag Kirk, why would they not want to know what the offer was? That’s ridiculous.
If the offer was stupid, I can see them not responding to it – but this idea that they had agreed ahead of time to never counter offer anything is just dumb.
I’ve argued for two years now that the FT was too close to perceived market for either side to really really negotiate so long as Cousins was willing to bet on himself. FTY3 is different.

I’d check to see if a Planet Fitness type place has monthly rates without a joining fee, but heck, here’s the thing, sometimes Planet Fitness has discount to $99 annual fee with no membership (joining fee). The math on that is simple, if you’re paying $100-120 per year, then you have to find some real cheap cardio equipment to make the math work, and not only that, they’re open 24 x 7. I’m not a member because I hit the pool and the squat rack a couple of times a week, but if cardio/resistance is what you’re looking for…

The way it has worked over the last 10 years has pretty much been that a new bench mark is set for QB salaries, and then within the old benchmark looks pretty reasonable. But there will be a tipping point where people look back at a salary and shake their head.
If Kirk goes all “in it for the money” to Cleveland. His legacy is likely to be as the guy who toppled the tipping point.
I was among a few here that suggested paying Kirk what most thought was too much would look like a bargain in very short order after the 2016 season. Remember when the numbers people were saying “NO WAY!” to was basically a 5-year deal at 21mil per year with 60 guaranteed?
Yeah. I do. And that would be a freaking bargain right now.
We are beyond the point of making a deal that works for this team. And if you have to ask yourself whether Kirk is worth that kind of money, then he’s not.

will the market bear that out? I don’t think quite so much. Not at least on the front end bonus. I doubt a new team offers him 51 mil cash first year, and the question might be is if any team is will not to do him dirty like the Skins tried (in his mind) with at least a defacto 3 year g’d deal (bonus plus g’d salary is ostensibly 3 years worth or g’s and cutting him year 3 is nearly impossible even w/o it). Would the Skins go even 15.5%? That would be about 27 mil, depending on what the final cap is. That would put him between the Stafford/Lucks of the world and D Carr.
….and he’s not as good as any of those QB’s.
So…..yeah.

Cleveland would have to blow him away with a plan, they might have some draft picks, but If’n I’m Kirk, I need to see them bring in a vet leader or two as well, but that would be hard for Cleveland to do BEFORE signing Kirk.

Tre’ Williams/LB/Auburn: Williams started the week with a monster hit which went viral on the internet. He finished Senior Bowl practices with a terrific day in coverage drills which really impressed scouts. The Auburn senior is quick, goes sideline to sideline and showed outstanding awareness. While his cover skills were not on the same level as Leonard, Williams leaves practice with an improved draft grade.

Getting good write ups for their ol play
– The most versatile offensive lineman, or prospect for that matter, in Mobile is Nevada’s Austin Corbett. Through three practices for the South team, he has taken snaps at all five positions on the offensive line. He does not just have position flexibility, but he was actually really good at tackle, guard, and center throughout the week.
The third and final practice was his exclamation point on a great week. Not only did he bury defensive tackle Poona Ford in the ground on two consecutive reps at center, but he then moved outside to right tackle to throw Marcus Davenport on the ground. With how talented he is and the fact that he could possibly play any spot on the offensive line, the hype train should get hot quick with Corbett.

Let me tell you something right now: there were easily four better QBs at the East/West Shrine Game who I would have loved to see in place of Lee. Lee supposedly has a good arm (it didn’t stand out against the Mayfields/Whites/Benkerts of the world), and honestly, I don’t know what else attracts people to him. His tape and his practices were both high-variance, inaccurate, frantic, and interception heavy.
I wish him all the best, but he was an easy slot at 8th for me.
