Redskins Training Camp Day 2 Notes
Many players had their moments throughout Washington’s two-hour practice on Friday. Individual drills and one-on-one showed a couple of standouts from the younger players. Wide Receiver Josh Doctson had a solid outing on Friday, mainly by showing no signs of a health issue, but he also made good plays in seven-on-seven and one-on-one. Veteran wideout Brian Quick utilized his strength and length in one-on-ones that, for that day, made him look uncheckable. Robert Kelley looked very good health-wise in team drills – his start and stop in the backfield that made him valuable in 2016 seemed to be back in his toolbox. Derrius Guice’s hands were reliable, as did not drop a pass as a receiving back in Friday’s practice.
Amongst the defensive line, Jonathan Allen and Da’Ron Payne were outstanding in one-on-one drills against the offensive lineman outside of one or two reps. Tim Settle also showed his strength as a 320-pound lineman a few times, even bull-rushing an offensive guard into the ground on one rep. Amongst the front seven Payne and outside linebacker Ryan Anderson left practice early due to injury, but no further information was provided to understand the extent of them.
In full team scrimmages, the defense dominated the day. The secondary highlighted the session, intercepting Alex Smith one time and dropping two more interceptions. The pressure was on the offensive line and quarterback throughout the 11 on 11’s Friday, forcing erratic decisions out of Alex Smith a few times. This is a promising sign for the defense given the significant turnover that the secondary unit underwent in the off-season. Montae Nicholson stated that communication is being emphasized this year, and it was on display during Friday’s practice.
