Training Camp Day 3 Notes
The first day in pads for head coach Jay Gruden’s Redskins team but was not an intense one for his players. Jay Gruden wanted to dial back the intensity for the first day with the primary concern being injuries. With that said, a couple of players did stand out that was worth noting in day three of training camp.
Jeremy Sprinkle was able to get some time with the starters today with Jordan Reed limited in his repetitions. Sprinkle seems to be more comfortable and fluid as a route runner, and that bodes well for the future because coaches will rely on him more as they develop game plans for opponents.
Reed himself looked good in the limited snaps he got. He showed some strength at the line of scrimmage, creating separation and getting off jams quickly for quarterback Alex Smith. Reed made an excellent contested catch on the sidelines in one rep that showed many he would be ready to go if this was the regular season.
Running backs Samaje Perine, Kapri Bibbs, and Derrius Guice each showed some explosion on a couple of runs during the full team scrimmages. The offensive line won the day today, creating lanes and cutback opportunity for the ball carriers. Perine broke through the line of scrimmage for over a 60-yard gain and a would-be touchdown.
The secondary had another impressive outing during Saturday’s session, not forcing many turnovers, but holding coverage for a considerable amount of time. In a live game, the dropbacks definitely would have counted as coverage sacks for the defense. Troy Apke’s speed was on display for a couple of repetitions; also, Apke tracked sailing passes down the field to bat the ball down. It would have been more beneficial for him to intercept the ball, but either way, he made the play. During walkthroughs in the afternoon, Fabian Moreau took all of his cornerback snaps from the slot position, where the team has a void due to the absence of Kendall Fuller. The starting role may be a two-person battle between Moreau and veteran Orlando Scandrick.
Overall, it was not a great day to evaluate all aspects of the team due to the level of intensity during practice. However, continue to follow these storylines to see how they develop over the course of camp and preseason.
