The competition at receiver got a little bit tighter after week 1 against New England; Is Cam Sims a legit candidate for the final 53?

The Redskins did not play their top end receivers in the pre-season opener against the New England Patriots Thursday. The decision not to play them allowed the less experienced players who are fighting for a roster spot to earn significant playing time. Robert Davis, Cam Sims, and Maurice Harris displayed why they are worth keeping around for the final 53-man roster. Each had moments of individualism; Davis with his size and speed, Sims with his playmaking ability after the catch, and Harris with his length and technical skills as a wide-out.

Mr. Irrelevant Trey Quinn was knocked out of the game early due to injury and was unable to make an in-game impression for the coaches. If Quinn is unable to perform for an extensive amount of time, the decision to trim the roster down became less stressful for the coaching staff.

Again, the top of the depth chart at receiver is already settled with Josh Doctson, Jamison Crowder, and Paul Richardson. However, with Brian Quick having a Did Not Play (DNP) Thursday night, it is hard to tell where he stands with coaches. Nonetheless, Quick has had a very impressive training camp to this point; his strength at wide receiver has created difficult match-ups for defenders. So is he in good favor with the coaches and they just wanted to see the younger players against the Patriots first and second string defense? Alternatively, is he in legit roster trouble?

After week one, Cam Sims stock has made a significant jump for the better moving forward, now can he take that momentum from Thursday and continue to build upon it each week of the pre-season? We will see.
