Redskins Coaching Update, Week 2
January 10, 2019
by Steve Thomas
Since we’ve now reached the end of week two of the Redskins offseason and rumors are flying around everywhere, it seems like a good time to catch everyone up on status of the seemingly in-flux Redskins coaching staff.
First, special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica is officially gone. His biography is gone from the Redskins’ website, and the Atlanta Falcons announced on Wednesday that he had been hired as their new special teams coordinator:
We have hired Ben Kotwica to be our special teams coordinator.

The Redskins did not make a formal announcement as to Kotwica. Assistant special teams coach Bret Munsey remains on staff.
Second, rumors have been flying that that defensive backs coach Torrian Gray has been let go, as first reported locally by Craig Hoffman:
As @MikeGarafolo said earlier, Torrian Gray is out with the #Redskins. As he hinted, it’s part of a much bigger house cleaning on that side of the ball.
Final names aren’t known yet, but a source indicates the changes will be basically whole-sale.

The Hog Sty has heard similar rumors. However, the Redskins have not made an announcement as to Gray’s status, there have been no reports of Gray either interviewing with or being hired by another team, and Gray is still listed on the Redskins website. So, as of right now, Gray appears to still be on staff.
Chris Lingebach reported that both defensive line coach Jim Tomsula and offensive line coach Bill Callahan want to leave the team:
Bill Callahan and Jim Tomsula could be next to flee Redskins Park, per @Russellmania621: "What I was told at the time was they are done, they are tired of the three-ring circus. They don't want to be here." https://t.co/RZNdMmFnx0

As reported by ESPN’s John Keim, Tomsula’s contract has expired, but Callahan remains under contract:
Don’t know if out there or not but was told earlier this morning that OL coach Bill Callahan is still under contract. DL coach Jim Tomsula is not. And so we wait.

This doesn’t necessarily mean that either man will actually leave, of course. As of publication of this column, both are still listed on the Redskins’ website.
The Redskins met early in the week with former Jets head coach Todd Bowles about the possibility of Bowles’ becoming the defensive coordinator, despite the fact that Greg Manusky appears to still be in the job. Bowles ultimately declined:
#Redskins fire DBs coach Torrian Gray, a source confirms to @CraigHoffman. They also met with Todd Bowles for an unidentified position, per @MikeGarafolo. Another shoe may drop soon. https://t.co/iTyuPNM5zv

In conjunction with that news, rumors have circulated all week that Manusky would be fired:
If Greg Manusky gets fired, Todd Bowles won't be replacing him. https://t.co/YEch69YTcZ

Other than Callahan, there have been no reports of changes to the offensive staff. In the end, despite all of the rumors, reports, and speculation, as of publication of this column, the only verified change that has been made to the Redskins coaching staff is Kotwica’s departure.
It’s truly as the world turns around here. Unbelievable. If coaching news breaks over the weekend, we’ll update this post here as necessary, so keeping checking back with us.
