Chris Russell and Craig Hoffman from 106.7 The Fan reported yesterday that Redskins Senior Vice President for Player Personnel Doug Williams has reportedly received a one year contract extension from the team:
Multiple sources tell @Russellmania621 and me that #Redskins Senior VP of Player Personnel Doug Williams has signed his planned one-year extension (known as a rollover). Contract now runs through 2021 and can be extended again next year. Story: https://t.co/7hU3S1KykL

At first glance, the fact that Williams’ extension is only one year is a bit odd, but what this does is keep him in place through 2021. According to 106.7’s report, Williams originally signed a 3 year contract back in 2017, so this extension keeps the team’s senior personnel executive in place for the next 3 years. If this coming season goes badly, heads will almost assuredly roll, starting with head coach Jay Gruden, and possibly more; therefore, retaining Williams really is just preserve the status quo through next two seasons to allow Dan Snyder and his much-maligned team president, Bruce Allen, to make decisions regarding the franchise’s long-term direction.
If the season goes well and things look solid for the future, then Snyder and Allen (who appears to not be going anywhere, ever, so give up the dream) may choose to keep the entire band together, including the front office and scouting staffs. Giving Williams a one year contract extension keeps the possibility of stability in place. Also, Williams has been the one to face the media in the midst of recent controversies such as the signing of Reuben Foster and the team’s cheerleading scandal last year, despite Allen or Snyder perhaps being more appropriate in those situations, so it is likely that Williams will continue to serve that function as well.
We’ll report more details as they become available.
