George Preston Marshall Monument Removed

There was no big announcement; it was practically done under the radar. But today it appears the city of Washington DC finally decided to remove the memorial to the Washington Redskins’ founding owner George Preston Marshall from the RFK Stadium site. There have been discussions for decades about removing the monument, which has stood outside the stadium for longer than all of us at The Hog Sty can remember, with the issue always coming back to the cost of removal and where it could be relocated. It isn’t completely clear who is responsible for today’s removal, but with recent public events and Marshall’s well known personal racist history, it seems the Washington Convention and Sports Authority made the decision to take it down a few years before the scheduled demolition of RFK Stadium, slated for 2022.
The removal was first pointed out on twitter:

Later John Keim had video of the monuments fall:

It seemed that someone had recently spray-painted the monument recently with the words “change the name”, again something that went unreported in any major news outlet.
