Game Recap – Cowboys at WFT – Week 7

Game Summary

First Quarter

The Washington Football Team opened on offense and started with a 11 play, 70-yard drive that started out promising but ended with a turnover on downs at the Cowboys 1-yard line. WFT thought they had scored a touchdown on a short pass to Terry McLaurin but the touchdown was overturned on review, ruling that the ball had not cross the plane of the goal line. A key play on the drive was an Antonio Gibson 40 yard run. On the next series, Landon Collins got a strip sack on Andy Dalton on a 3rd and 8 play, with Dallas’ Dalton Schultz recovering in the end zone for a WFT safety. After the free kick, WFT drove down the field with a 7 play, 63 yard drive and scored on a Gibson 12 yard touchdown run. A key play on that drive was a 26 yard completion to Logan Thomas. The Cowboys’ Tony Pollard returned the ensuing kickoff for 67 yards, giving Dallas excellent field position. The WFT held the Cowboys to only 7 yards on 3 plays and, Dallas was forced to kick a 45 yard field goal. The Cowboys’ defense finally stiffened up and held WFT to a 3 and out.

Second Quarter

Dallas then had a 9 play, 36 yard drive which ended in a turnover on downs when Dallas failed to convert a 4th and one after Dalton came up short on a third down scramble. WFT then scored 2 plays later on a 52 yard touchdown pass to McLaurin which included an illegal contact penalty on Trevon Diggs. WFT failed to convert the 2 point conversion after Thomas dropped the ball after a strong hit in the end zone. The WFT defense held Dallas to a 3 yard drive that resulted in a punt. WFT then went on a 10 play, 60 yard drive which ended with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Thomas. Dustin Hopkins converted the extra point. The Cowboys then went on a 13 play, 68 yard drive which ended in a Cole Holcomb interception of Dalton at the WFT 5 yard line. The key play on that drive was an 18 yard completion to Amari Cooper on a 3rd and 10, again the WFT defense burned on a 3rd and long play. WFT took a knee to end the half.

Third Quarter

The Cowboys opened the second half with a short 5 play, 4 yard drive stopped by a Montez Sweat sack on Dalton. WFT then when a on 9 play, 36 yard drive that fizzled out just over the 50 yard line. Tress Way then nailed a punt to the Cowboys 3 yard line, backing up Dallas near their own goal line. The WFT defense then held the Cowboys short of the first down; however, Jonathan Bostic was called for an illegal hit penalty on the Dalton scramble. Bostic was disqualified for that play. Dallas’ third string quarterback Ben DiNucci came into the game and had a brief moment when he completed his first NFL pass for 32 yards to Cooper. Sacks by Tim Settle and Sweat, left the Cowboys with a 4th and 26.

Fourth Quarter

In a drive that started in the third quarter, WFT went on an 11 play, 63 yard drive which ended in a Hopkins 30 yard field goal. The WFT defense held the Cowboys to a 3 and out, then followed that with a 10 play drive for 36 yards that ended with a Hopkins missed 44 yard field goal. More importantly, the drive burned over seven minutes off the clock. The WFT defense held the Cowboys offense to another 3 and out keyed by a Ryan Kerrigan sack for a 9 yard loss. After the Dallas punt, WFT was then able to run out the clock and preserve the win.
