Road to the Draft – Part 1

The season is over for the Washington Football Team, so thoughts turn to free agency and the draft. This weekly column will focus of the draft and the players mocked to WFT in various mock drafts published on the Internet.
Needs
Of course, at this point in the offseason, we do not yet know what positions will be addressed in free agency and which Washington free agents will be re-signed. Re-signing players like Brandon Scherff and Ronald Darby would close up openings on the offensive line and secondary. The team also needs a wide receiver who can be a consistent threat opposite of Terry McLaurin. Also, the team needs another tight end to pair with Logan Thomas, although the coaching staff is high on Thaddeus Moss, who spent last season on injured reserve. Defensively, the linebacker group was adequate this past season but not great. The secondary could also use an upgrade at free safety.
The biggest question position is quarterback, especially after the release of Dwayne Haskins. From the 60 Minutes interview, it seems that Alex Smith wants to continue to play. Smith and Steven Montez are the only two quarterbacks under contract currently. Kyle Allen (exclusive rights free agent) and Taylor Heinicke (restricted free agent) are free agents.
Early Lead
So far, forty mock drafts have been published and if last year is any indication, that number will go above 100 before the draft. Washington will have the 19th overall pick in the first round. The position picked by descending frequency is:

Christian Darrisaw is a name a lot of people may not be familiar with. He has really developed the last couple of years and had a very strong season this year. He ended being named to several All-American teams. Rashod Bateman and Jaylen Waddle would both fill the wide receiver position across from McLaurin. Bateman is the big physical type, while Waddle is the smaller speedy guy in the Desean Jackson mode. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah is seen as a weak-side linebacker at the NFL-level. That is the role that Kevin Pierre-Louis, who is an unrestricted free agent, filled last season.
