As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Washington is expected to hire former Carolina Panthers GM Marty Hurney to serve as Washington’s general manager.
Hurney was originally a Redskins beat writer who transitioned into Washington’s public relations office in 1988. He then moved over to the San Diego Chargers to serve as assistant general manager from 1990 to 1997. Hurney was subsequently hired by the Carolina Panthers and served as director of football administration, director of player operations, and general manager from 1998 through 2012. He was fired in 2012 but later re-hired as general manager again in 2017. Hurney was fired by Carolina for the second time this past December. He served with Washington head coach Ron Rivera at Carolina from 2011 through 2012, then again from 2017 through 2019.
ESPN’s John Keim reported that Rivera will still retain power over the football side of franchise operations, but that the team wanted to take some of the “administrative burden” off of Rivera by bringing in a general manager.
Hurney was investigated by the NFL in 2017-18 following allegations of harassment by his former wife, but was cleared and reinstated by the Panthers.[1]
As of yet, the team has not made an official announcement of this hiring.
