As you may have heard by now, the Washington Football Team did not select a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft. Currently on the roster are Ryan Fitzpatrick (on a one-year deal), Kyle Allen (17 career starts), Taylor Heinicke (two career starts) and Steven Montez (zero career starts).

When you look at how the team did between the week 6 Giants game and the week 17 game against the Eagles last year, they lost 5 of 11 games by an average of four points. The main reason for the improvement over the first five weeks was better quarterback play.

The team made additions to the defense through free agency and the draft and has the potential to be a top 10 caliber defense. If WFT can avoid the multiple turnover games which turned into blowouts and win 50% or better of the close game, it will be a very successful year for the team.

The downside to that is the draft position in 2022 will again be in the bottom half of the round. That’s not a great position to be in when you are looking to draft a franchise quarterback.

You may be asking yourself, which quarterbacks should I look at when watching college games this fall?

Here is the early list of potential 2022 quarterback draft candidates. Not every player will choose to become NFL draft eligible since a number of them will still have college eligibility left.

Sam Howell – A true junior this fall.  In his first two seasons he has thrown for 7,227 yards with 68 touchdowns against 14 interceptions in 25 games started. His completion rate is 64.4% of pass attempts. With another good year, he could be a top 5 pick.

Bo Nix – A true junior this fall. In his first two seasons he has thrown for 4,957 yards with 28 touchdowns against 13 interceptions in 24 games started. His completion rate is 58.7% of pass attempts.

Kedon Slovis – A true junior this fall. In his first two seasons he has thrown for 5,423 yards with 47 touchdowns against 16 interceptions in 18 games started. His completion rate is 70% of pass attempts.

Brock Purdy – A true senior this fall. In his career he has thrown for 8,982 yards with 62 touchdowns against 25 interceptions in 35 games. His completion rate is 66.1% of pass attempts. He had a bit of a down year in 2020 and needs to show improvement in the 2021 season to move further up the draft board.

Tanner Morgan – A true senior this fall. In his career he has thrown for 6.023 yards with 46 touchdowns against 18 interceptions in 29 games. His completion rate is 62% of pass attempts. His worst year in college was the 2020 season. He needs to show a lot of improved play this fall to get back into consideration for a day 1 or day 2 pick in the 2022 draft.

Desmond Ridder – A true senior this fall. In his 36 career starts he has thrown for 6,905 yards, 57 touchdowns, 20 interceptions and complete 61% of this throws. He has also rushed for 1,825 yards and 22 touchdowns. He is one of the new breed of mobile, athletic quarterbacks.

Malik Willis – A senior this fall at Liberty after transferring from Auburn. In his one season as a starter he threw for 2,250 yards with 20 touchdowns and 6 interceptions, completing 64.2 of his passes. He also rushed for 944 yards and 14 touchdowns. His “Lamar Jackson” type skills have teams interested. He will have to show consistency this year to warrant day 2 consideration.
